Meteorological Department Issues Alert #3: Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall Warning, Flash Floods and Flash Flooding Expected May 14-18
Thailand's Meteorological Department warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall from May 14-18, with flash floods expected in hilly and low-lying areas as a strengthening monsoon system moves across the region.
On May 14, 2025, the Thai Meteorological Department issued weather alert #3 (63/2569) warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Thailand and strong winds in the Andaman Sea, with effects from May 14-18, 2025. During this period, rainfall will increase significantly across northern, central, northeastern, and southern Thailand, with some areas experiencing heavy to very heavy downpours.
Residents are urged to exercise caution against hazards from intense rainfall and accumulated water that may cause sudden flash floods and flash flooding, particularly in hilly terrain near waterways and in low-lying areas. This weather pattern is caused by a strengthening low-pressure system in the lower Bay of Bengal moving northward to cover the upper Bay of Bengal, combined with an intensifying southwest monsoon affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.
Maritimely, the Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand will experience strengthening winds and waves. From May 15-18, the Andaman Sea will have waves 2-3 meters high, with areas experiencing thunderstorms seeing waves exceeding 3 meters. The upper Gulf of Thailand will have waves around 2 meters, reaching over 2 meters in thunderstorm areas.
Fishermen in these regions are advised to exercise caution and avoid areas with thunderstorms. Small boats in the Andaman Sea should remain ashore during this period. The public is encouraged to monitor updates from the Thai Meteorological Department via its website at http://www.tmd.go.th or by calling 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182, available 24 hours daily. The next alert will be issued on May 14, 2025, at 5:00 PM.
