A 74-year-old woman from Nang Rong District regained consciousness and began breathing again while her body was being prepared for funeral rites at a temple, shocking her family and prompting them to switch prayers toward her recovery.
A 74-year-old woman shocked everyone at a temple when she suddenly coughed and began breathing again while preparations for her funeral rites were underway. Though she showed no signs of life during transport from Buriram Hospital, she began coughing and breathing as her body was being placed in the temple's mortuary hall for the water-sprinkling and chanting ceremony, astonishing relatives and villagers alike. The family decided to change the funeral prayers to recovery blessings.
Highway rescue police posted about the elderly woman after relatives had fully prepared her funeral and invited monks to conduct traditional Buddhist rites. The woman, Nang Choy Phaphayontr, 74, from Thanon Hak Subdistrict, Nang Rong District, was believed to have died from cerebral artery stenosis. Throughout the journey from Buriram Hospital, she remained motionless without breath, but upon arrival at Thanon Hak Temple, she suddenly coughed and began breathing again.
On July 3, 2026, reporters visited Thanon Hak Temple in Nang Rong District and found the temple's mortuary hall prepared with a coffin, flowers, photographs, and chairs for mourners. Highway rescue police coordinated with Nang Rong Hospital to provide oxygen tanks as her breathing remained shallow and labored. She was taken home for palliative care per family wishes and currently remains on oxygen support with good responsiveness but cannot communicate.
Her 77-year-old husband, Nai Supon Phaphayontr, said that after his wife fell ill and was transferred from Nang Rong Hospital to Buriram Hospital, doctors advised him to say goodbye as she was nearing the end. When her body arrived at the temple and relatives had completed all funeral preparations and invited monks, she suddenly began breathing again. He expressed both shock and joy, and the family will continue caring for her.
Their 47-year-old son, Nai Yutthasak Phaphayontr, explained that his mother was hospitalized on June 23 with diagnosed cerebral artery stenosis and brain swelling in critical condition. Doctors presented treatment options, but the family chose not to operate due to her age. During transport from the hospital with rescue personnel, the mother showed no signs of life and the family believed she had died. At the temple, she suddenly coughed and began breathing, astonishing everyone. The family believes it may be a miracle or the result of her accumulated merit, and they are grateful to care for her with their children.
