According to Police Captain Sinotthai Lilittham, superintendent of Phuping Rajanivet Police Station, the arrested suspect is Kiattisak, 28, a taxi driver. He was captured while meeting his girlfriend near a dormitory in Tambon Wat Ket, Muang District. Police recovered 13 stolen iPhones and one laptop from his possession.

Kiattisak confessed to using a brick to smash the store window before stealing the items inside. He then fled to Chiang Rai before returning to Chiang Mai to meet his girlfriend, where he was arrested. He cited poor economic circumstances and financial necessity as reasons for the crime.

The suspect has been taken to Phuping Rajanivet Police Station and charged accordingly, with legal proceedings to follow.

When questioned, the victim's 12-year-old granddaughter disclosed that while she was talking to her mother on the phone, the suspect shouted threats saying "Watch out, I'll kill you." She ran away and then heard him arguing with her grandmother before hearing her scream. Frightened, she fled without realizing her grandmother had been fatally stabbed. Upon learning of her grandmother's death, she was deeply distressed, having lived with her grandmother her whole life.

Police have charged the suspect with premeditated murder and unlawful carrying of a knife in public. He is being held pending submission to court.

Kuwait increased executions from 6 to 17, Egypt from 13 to 23, Singapore from 9 to 17, and the United States from 25 to 47.

The 2025 figures exclude China, which is believed to carry out thousands of executions annually, making it the world's leading executioner. Nearly half of all 2025 executions were drug-related offenses, totaling at least 1,257 cases—46 percent in China alone, followed by Iran with at least 998, Saudi Arabia with 240, Singapore with 15, and Kuwait with 2.

Some countries are expanding capital punishment to cover more drug-related crimes. Despite rising execution numbers, executions remain concentrated in a small group of nations, with only 10 countries carrying out executions every year over the past five years. Four countries have resumed executions after a hiatus. By the end of 2025, 17 countries carried out executions, while 113 countries have abolished capital punishment for all crimes, and 145 countries total have abolished or suspended it either in law or practice.

The collision resulted in a fire, killing 8 people and injuring more than 30 others on the afternoon of May 16.

Investigators examined CCTV footage near the scene and identified two people in cab seat No. 2 before the collision: Somphon (46), the freight train driver, and Siriphumi (21), the mechanic sitting beside him.

During questioning, Siriphumi revealed to authorities that from a distance of approximately 500 meters before reaching the intersection, he saw what appeared to be a parked bus that looked like an "advertisement sign." Only when the train drew to within 300 meters did he realize it was actually an air-conditioned bus blocking the tracks. He immediately signaled the driver, and both men pulled the brakes.
