Surat Thani police have arrested a suspect accused of stealing from a young athlete competing in the National Youth Games within 48 hours. On May 10, 2025, Police Major General Suwat Suksri, commander of Surat Thani Provincial Police, along with deputy commander Police Colonel Sirichai Suksart, Muang Surat Thani Station Commander Police Colonel Pornrong Garonarjai, and deputy station commander Police Lieutenant Yot Chaorai, apprehended 49-year-old Thammavet, nicknamed Yod, and recovered a mobile phone and backpack.
The arrest followed an incident on the evening of May 8 when the suspect allegedly stole belongings from athletes who had traveled to compete in the National Youth Games in Surat Thani. The case drew significant attention on social media and caused considerable embarrassment to the province as host.
Investigating officers moved quickly following the report and managed to arrest the suspect within 48 hours at a residence in Tambon Tha Thong Mai, Amphoe Kanthaladis, Surat Thani Province. They recovered an iPhone 17 before taking him in for questioning.
The suspect initially confessed before being transferred to Muang Surat Thani Police Station, where he faces charges of theft or receiving stolen property.
