Labor Layoffs Surge to 40,000 Monthly, Devastating Economy; State Urged to Control Prices

Thailand's monthly labor layoffs have soared to 40,000 workers, prompting advocacy groups to demand government intervention on price controls and worker protections during a National Labor Day panel discussion. Platform workers like ride-hailing drivers face additional hardship as compensation rates have dropped from 60-80 baht to just 20 baht per trip, forcing excessive working hours and creating safety risks. Economists warn that structural economic inequality and inadequate government response leave vulnerable workers bearing the brunt of Thailand's stagflation crisis.

29 Apr Khaosod

On April 29, 2025 at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, the Women and Men Step Forward Foundation, along with the Child, Youth and Family Foundation, the Rangsit Area Labor Union, and the People's Health Promotion Movement, supported by the Health Promotion Fund Office, convened a national Labor Day panel discussion titled "Examining Thai Workers in Crisis: Deteriorating Quality of Life."

Jadet Chaowinwilai, advisor to the Women and Men Step Forward Foundation, stated that National Labor Day provides a platform for workers to voice workplace problems and demand solutions, appropriate welfare benefits, and remedies. He emphasized that Thailand currently faces compounded crises: economic problems, environmental crisis, global warming, and war-driven oil price increases that have cascaded into consumer price inflation, raising the cost of living. Workers are directly affected through approximately 40,000 monthly layoffs, while platform workers like riders face reduced per-trip compensation. Both groups suffer severe income loss and physical and mental health deterioration.

Voradul Tularak, an economist and labor researcher with the Platform Worker Wellbeing Development Project, noted that Thailand's economy is entering stagflation—slow growth with high inflation—compounded by unresolved structural inequality and income disparity. This leaves the nation vulnerable to increasingly severe crises. The poor and unprotected workers, particularly ride-hailing workers, suffer first and most severely. Platform workers lack labor law protections, bear rising work costs, yet labor in extreme heat exceeding 40 degrees Celsius and PM2.5 dust pollution. Government response has been slow and unfocused compared to South Korea and Singapore.

Voradul recommended new welfare models including rest areas and drinking water stations in urban zones, dust protection equipment, and breathable uniforms provided by platforms rather than taxpayer funds. He advocated for mandatory work stoppages during dangerous heat or pollution levels, and fair compensation mechanisms for energy costs and work risks to protect workers under intensifying crisis conditions.

Prapaporn Phonin, representing the Rider Network, stated that rider compensation has plummeted from initial rates of 60-80 baht per trip to approximately 20 baht. This forces riders to work longer hours, take more trips, and sacrifice rest, increasing traffic accident risks.

Farmer's Stubble Burning Spreads to Destroy 5 Rai Orchard, Owner Devastated as Rare Trees Lost

Uncontrolled stubble burning destroyed a 5-rai orchard in Sukhothai, killing rare hardwood and fruit trees worth over 100,000 baht that the owner had nurtured for four years.

29 Apr Khaosod

In Dong Dueay subdistrict, Khong Krai district, Sukhothai province, a farmer secretly set fire to rice stubble that spread uncontrollably to an agricultural orchard. The fire destroyed rare hardwood trees and various fruits including bananas and multiple mango varieties, causing damage of at least 100,000 baht. The orchard owner was so distraught he nearly collapsed from the heartbreak of seeing trees he had nurtured for years consumed in minutes.

Phannamee Toengiew, 61, the orchard owner, revealed he had purchased the 5-rai land and spent four years cultivating over 100 trees of various species including marit (rare forest timber), mahogany, teak, mango, banana, and other hardwoods. Last year, a similar incident burned 2 rai and killed nearly 40 mango trees. This year proved worse, with the fire consuming almost the entire 5-rai plot and killing most of the trees.

"I bought this land and planted trees, hoping to build a retirement home someday," Phannamee said. "I'm fortunate I hadn't started construction yet, or the fire would have cost me another 400,000 to 500,000 baht. I urge farmers to be careful—I understand agricultural practices, but please consider the consequences to your neighbors."

29 Apr Khaosod

Tacereuq delivered a beautiful knockout victory over Tank Jitmuangnanth in the final round to claim the interim ONE Kickboxing Flyweight World Championship, perfectly capping off ONE Samurai 1 on April 29, 2025, at Ariake Arena in Tokyo, Japan.

The main event featured Tank Jitmuangnanth, former ONE Muay Thai Flyweight World Champion, against local favorite Tacereuq in a fight for the interim ONE Kickboxing Flyweight World Championship (125-135 lbs). In their rematch from ONE 172 in Japan last March, Tank had won quickly with a devastating left hook to the jaw, knocking out Tacereuq at 1:20 of the first round. This time proved different, as Tank was sent down four times before being knocked out by Tacereuq in the final round, securing the interim championship in impressive fashion.

Nadaka, the undefeated ONE Muay Thai Atomweight World Champion from Japan with 40 consecutive victories, successfully defended his title for the first time against Songchai Noi Kiattisongrit, a Thai challenger. Throughout an exciting fight, Songchai pressed forward from the opening round while Nadaka relied on speed and timing, ultimately winning by decision to extend his undefeated streak to 41 consecutive fights.

Haggerty returned after 432 days away from competition following ONE 171 in Qatar on February 25, 2025, successfully defending his Kickboxing Championship title for the second time. Yuki Motoya, the local Japanese fighter, attempted calf kicks on Haggerty's advancing knees but couldn't break through. The bout remained competitive throughout five rounds, with Haggerty ultimately securing the decision victory and his second successful title defense.

Marat Grigorian, the fierce Armenian striker, lived up to his reputation by sending local favorite Kaito down to the canvas in the opening round and securing a knockout victory in the Kickboxing Featherweight bout (145-155 lbs).

In another Muay Thai Flyweight (125-135 lbs) matchup, 21-year-old Shimon Daw, a Japanese prospect, was dropped twice but recovered to defeat Johan Ghazali, a Malaysian-American fighter, by decision and earned a 1.7 million baht bonus with a new ONE contract.

No Way Out – Anutin's Government Hasn't Had a Single Winning Move Since Day One

Anutin's government faces mounting criticism over economic mismanagement, particularly Deputy PM Suthep's failed durian market intervention that angered farmers, while global supply chain disruptions from Middle Eastern tensions continue de

29 Apr Khaosod

Anutin Charnvirakul's government deserves sympathy for taking over during Songkran amid the U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict that has devastated the global economy and left Thailand's economy in dire straits. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to Middle Eastern tensions has blocked oil tankers and cargo ships, causing prices for fuel, energy, fertilizer, and industrial components to spike dramatically—a severe situation expected to persist through year-end. The government's economic team faces an uphill battle, but the harshest criticism is directed at Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, a high-society favorite whose recent missteps have damaged his credibility. His latest blunder involved partnering with influencers to sell durian at 100 baht each, triggering farmer outrage and undercutting prices that had reached hundreds of baht per kilogram—a misguided approach to addressing agricultural prices that has worsened rather than helped the situation. While other crops face collapsing prices, the Commerce Ministry's interference in the durian market was both tone-deaf and counterproductive. The Anutin administration entered office during what can only be described as an economic nightmare, facing only downward pressure with no relief in sight. Beyond the economic battlefield, the government also faces political challenges and legal battles in independent agencies—a genuinely dire situation.
