Israel Launches Fresh Strikes on Hezbollah; Lebanese Civilians Caught in Crossfire as Death Toll Exceeds 120

Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have killed at least 39 people in a single day, with the Lebanese Health Ministry reporting over 120 deaths from attacks in the past week. A strike on the southern town of Saksakiyeh killed at least seven people including a child, prompting the IDF to acknowledge reports of civilian casualties and pledge investigation. The violence continues despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, as Israel says the agreement does not cover Hezbollah operations.

10 May Khaosod

Israel Launches Fresh Strikes on Hezbollah – On May 10, the BBC reported that Lebanon's Health Ministry revealed at least 39 deaths from Israeli airstrikes on Saturday, May 9 local time, including strikes on the southern Lebanese town of Saksakiyeh which killed at least seven people, including one girl, and wounded 15 others, three of them children.

The Lebanese government stated that over 120 people have been killed in Israeli attacks over the past week, including women and children, with the ministry not distinguishing between civilians and Hezbollah fighters.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that it targeted Hezbollah armed groups, saying "Hezbollah terrorists operating within structures used for military purposes. Before the strike, measures were taken to minimize civilian risk to the greatest extent possible, including the use of high-precision ammunition and aerial surveillance." However, the IDF acknowledged reports of harm to uninvolved civilians and said it is investigating further.

Israeli and Hezbollah forces continue to clash despite a ceasefire agreement announced by U.S. President Donald Trump between the Israeli government and Lebanon on April 16, with Israel previously stating the agreement does not cover Hezbollah, designated as a terrorist organization.

Veteran Red-Shirt Leader Encourages Supporters Gathering for 'Thaksin's' Release, Hails Him as 'PM in the Hearts of the People'

10 May Khaosod

At 7 p.m. on May 10, 2025, the area outside Klongprem Central Prison was bustling with activity as Prom Phongpanich Nopruitti, former spokesman for the Pheu Thai Party, arrived to rally supporters gathered to welcome Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister, who is scheduled for release on May 11. Prom Phongpanich spoke with a broad smile, expressing excitement similar to that of a "student" counting down to a release date, just like Thaksin, having himself served four months in prison and reporting monthly according to regulations.

Prom Phongpanich emphasized that he deeply understands the feelings of those who fought in politics to the highest levels and faced difficult times in prison. He said his visit represented a shared political destiny. The former party spokesman also delivered an important message to society, stating that it was time for all sides to forgive one another. Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness but rather the strength of Thai society to move forward. He stressed that resentment has never solved economic problems, never lowered electricity bills, or improved people's quality of life.

Prom Phongpanich concluded by noting that Thaksin draws tremendous morale from the unwavering support of his family and the people over two decades. Despite being away from the Prime Minister's office for more than 20 years, his work and policies remain remembered as that of a "PM in the hearts of the people"—unlike some who held office for long but are completely forgotten. He predicted that tomorrow morning would see even larger crowds gathering to give a worthy welcome to the return of this legendary former Prime Minister.

10 May Khaosod

Phetchabun province experienced another severe summer storm on May 10, 2025, marking the second consecutive day of extreme weather. Strong winds and heavy rainfall battered the Sadieng and Nangua subdistricts of Mueang Phetchabun, causing widespread damage to homes and buildings that officials are still surveying. The storm toppled several large eucalyptus trees, including one that brought down seven electrical poles along the Saraburi-Lom Sak road, resulting in power outages across much of Phetchabun Municipality. Traffic lights went out, prompting authorities to deploy traffic cones for safety management. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage directly resulted from the pole collapses. Provincial electricity officials worked through 6:00 PM to restore power to affected areas, while machinery and equipment have been prepared to replace the damaged high-voltage poles the following day.

Nepal Issues Record 492 Mount Everest Permits as Roughly 1,000 Climbers Prepare to Summit

Nepal has issued a record 492 permits to climb Mount Everest this spring, with an estimated 1,000 mountaineers expected to attempt the summit in coming weeks. The previous record of 478 permits was set in 2023, while Chinese and American climbers dominate this season's permits. Dangerous ice conditions in the Khumbu Icefall have complicated expedition preparations, though routes to Camp 4 have been successfully opened.

10 May Khaosod

On May 10, Nepal's tourism office announced that it has issued a record 492 permits to climb Mount Everest this spring climbing season. Nepal's tourism spokesperson Himal Gotam stated: "We have issued permits for Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) in the greatest numbers in history." He noted that the previous record was set in 2023 with 478 permits issued during the same period. Most climbers attempting Everest must be accompanied by at least one local Sherpa guide, meaning approximately 1,000 mountaineers will be heading to the summit in the coming weeks.

Nepal's expert mountaineering teams, known as "icefall doctors," began installing ropes and ladders on Everest in April to prepare for the spring season. However, large ice blocks above the Khumbu Icefall—the most dangerous section of Everest located between the summit and the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge—have posed significant obstacles to their work, raising concerns about potential delays in the climbing season. Gotam reported that a route to South Col, or Camp 4, at 7,906 meters has been opened via an alternative route.

Climbers from China received the most permits this season with 109, followed by the United States with 76. Nepal is home to 8 of the world's 10 highest peaks, making it a major destination for international mountaineers. This climbing season generates significant revenue for Nepal, with the government collecting over $7.1 million from Everest permits, equivalent to approximately 228 million Thai baht.

Phuket MP Blasts Prime Minister for Dodging Freedom Beach Inspection, Ignoring Officials' Pleas—Are 'Influential Groups' Untouchable?

A Phuket MP has publicly criticized Prime Minister Anutin for canceling a planned inspection of Freedom Beach, alleging the government is avoiding investigation into problems at the popular beach including land encroachment, organized crime, drug trafficking, and potential influence by powerful groups. The MP claims officials waited to provide clarifications but the PM suddenly diverted to Ranong province, and questions whether the government is genuinely committed to protecting public interests or merely protecting untouchable elites.

10 May Khaosod

On May 10, 2025, Chalermphong Saengdee, a Democrat MP representing Phuket's District 2, posted on Facebook questioning whether Prime Minister Anutin was avoiding a Freedom Beach inspection out of fear of the mafia. He stated he had prepared documents to submit to the PM highlighting major issues at Freedom Beach and Noi Beach involving substantial vested interests, land encroachment at Khao Khaad, restricted public resource access, and local suffering.

The MP cited multiple unresolved problems: inadequate tourist screening under the visa-free policy leading to crime affecting residents' safety; delayed transportation infrastructure projects like the Patong Tunnel that locals have requested for over 30 years; and persistent drug problems in Rawai and Thai Mueang despite previous government schedules. Officials from relevant agencies had prepared to provide clarifications but the PM's visit was cancelled.

Chalermphong also raised concerns about Noi Beach in Karon, where influence and power have prevented resolving public land disputes, and drug trafficking around the Seafood Market in Rawai that has worsened over a decade, affecting youth—Thailand's future.

Questioning whether the government genuinely protects public interests or fears certain influential groups, the MP criticized years of broken promises and image-making around tourism while underlying problems persist. He vowed to continue investigating, emphasizing that national resources and beaches belong to all citizens, not capitalists or the mafia, and that people demand action, not just words.

Reports indicate that officials and civil servants in full dress uniform had gathered at Freedom Beach to welcome the PM, but he abruptly cancelled to rush to inspect smuggled goods operations in Ranong province.
