A train driver and railway signal operator were detained and brought to Ratchada Criminal Court on May 18, 2569 following a catastrophic collision on May 16 that left 8 dead and over 30 injured. The freight train No. 2126 struck air-conditioned bus line 206 at the Makkasan railway crossing, triggering a massive fire. Investigators questioned Somyaporn, the train driver, and Uthen, the signal operator responsible for controlling the railway crossing barriers at the time of the incident, before transferring them to court for initial detention hearings. During custody transfer, Uthen briefly apologized when asked by reporters about the incident, but offered no explanation when questioned about why he didn't look back while signaling or why he lowered the barrier so quickly. Somyaporn, the train driver, appeared visibly distressed with red-rimmed eyes and a tense expression throughout questioning but refused to answer any questions, keeping his head down. Prosecutors opposed bail at both the investigation and court stages. Meanwhile, Lapis, the BMTA bus driver who suffered severe injuries and burns, remains hospitalized. Blood tests revealed no narcotics in his system. Police have not yet filed charges against him, pending recovery of his injuries so he can provide a statement. He is expected to face identical recklessness charges as the train driver once medical clearance is obtained.
