Suphamas Lays Wreath Commemorating 34 Years of May Democracy Uprising, Affirms Government Listens to Differing Views Without Violence

Thailand's government honored the 34th anniversary of the 1992 May democracy uprising on Saturday, with a minister affirming the administration's commitment to handling dissent through peaceful dialogue rather than violence.

2d ago Khaosod

At 9:30 AM on May 17, 2025, at Santirat Park's May Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Road, Suphamas Isarabhakdi, Minister attached to the Office of the Prime Minister, represented the government at the wreath-laying and memorial ceremony for the May 1992 democracy uprising heroes on the occasion of its 34th anniversary. The ceremony was attended by Bangkok Governor Chatchachati Sithiphan, May Democracy Foundation Chair Prinyada Thevanimit, and political party representatives.

Suphamas stated that the government is honored to participate in commemorating the 34-year anniversary of the 1992 May uprising, a significant event in Thai political history reflecting the immense power of the people. The May 1992 events demonstrated the people's determination to uphold justice and drive democratic governance that respects public voice. Despite over three decades passing, the significance of these events remains meaningful for developing Thai democracy.

Suphamas noted that differing opinions are consistent with democratic principles, but the important thing is seeking common solutions peacefully based on reason and mutual understanding. The government is committed to administering the country on a non-violence principle, emphasizing dialogue for reconciliation and opening space for all sectors to participate in solving national problems together.

The May events serve as a reminder for everyone to maintain peace, respect differing views, and build a fair and strong democratic society for future generations. She expressed condolences to all heroes lost and sent sympathy to their families and all affected, hoping their sacrifice inspires Thai society to continue on democracy's path.

Prinyada stated that 34 years have passed since the May 1992 uprising, and the exact death toll remains unknown, though 44 bodies were reported at hospitals with over 500 people still missing—possibly exceeding the October 14 event's approximately 70 deaths. He emphasized that the May 17 commemorations are not merely remembrances but lessons that differing opinions should not lead to losses or government suppression.

Prinyada expressed disappointment that despite the 1997 Constitution being a "people's constitution," two subsequent coups in 2006 and 2014 undermined it. He stated that a referendum on February 8, 2025 showed over 65% support for a new constitution replacing the one imposed after the 2014 coup, and he called upon everyone to imagine a government with public participation.

A lawyer driving a car bearing the bar association logo hit a motorcycle in Udon Thani Province on May 16, injuring the rider, before refusing a breathalyzer test despite appearing intoxicated at the scene.

On May 16 at approximately 9:15 p.m., emergency services in Udon Thani Province responded to a collision between a car, motorcycle, and power pole behind Rachini Girls School on Sri Chom Chuen Road. At the scene, responders found a Honda sedan bearing the bar association logo with frontal damage, and a Honda motorcycle severely damaged and lodged against a tree and school fence. The motorcycle rider, 42-year-old Manit, suffered minor injuries. The car driver, identified as lawyer Priecha (surname withheld), was observed appearing intoxicated—unsteady on his feet, slurring his words, and swaying. When questioned about drinking, Priecha insisted he was not drunk, claiming he cannot practice law while intoxicated and that he maintains professional ethics. He acknowledged attending a social gathering but denied it was a regular habit. Police officer Adulchai Khaokham requested an initial breathalyzer test, which Priecha refused, stating "I've cooperated this much, will you still dare do that? This car has no insurance. Don't force me." The officer explained that refusal would be documented as evidence and reported to the Udon Thani Bar Association. Priecha accused rescue workers and police of exceeding their authority and made threats, saying "many people will meet in court soon." The motorcycle rider stated he was waiting for a job when the sedan suddenly struck him at high speed, throwing him onto the sidewalk. He suffered minor injuries to his waist and left leg. The investigation is ongoing.

Tragic: Husband and Wife Killed in Motorcycle Accident, Found Embracing After Being Hit by Truck

A Myanmar couple died when their motorcycle skidded on sand and fell into the path of a container truck on a Bangkok-area road; the driver fled the scene, and police are pursuing charges.

2d ago Khaosod

In a heartbreaking incident, a married couple from Myanmar died when their motorcycle lost traction on loose sand, causing them to crash directly into the path of a container truck. The accident occurred on May 16 on Phanvee Road near Ban Thong Khung School in Khlong Dan Subdistrict, Bang Bo District, Samut Prakan Province.

The deceased have been identified as Sin Win, 47, and Piu Piu Win, 55. Investigators found the wife's body with her arms wrapped around her husband, both with their heads crushed under their helmets. A Honda Wave motorcycle with Bangkok license plates was found overturned at the scene.

According to Pol. Lt. Polchai Kumkhuntod of Khlong Dan Police Station, investigators discovered significant sand debris on the road surface, which contributed to the motorcycle's loss of traction. CCTV footage from 6:30 p.m. on May 16 captured the moment the couple's motorcycle skidded on sand while braking to follow another motorcycle that was slowing to turn into a soi. The couple lost control and fell to the right, directly into the path of the container truck behind them. The truck's rear wheel struck both riders fatally before the driver accelerated and fled the scene toward the Khlong Dan intersection.

Police are tracking the truck's route through additional CCTV cameras approximately one kilometer from the incident site and working to identify the vehicle's license plate. Authorities are pursuing the truck driver for questioning and will proceed with legal charges. The victims' bodies have been sent to Samut Prakan Institute of Forensic Medicine for detailed autopsy examination.
