Railway Department Issues Urgent Order to Test Railway Employees for Drug Use Nationwide
Thailand's Railway Department has mandated immediate drug and alcohol testing for nearly 1,000 train operators nationwide following a bus collision, with a zero-tolerance policy for positive results.
The Railway Department has issued an urgent order to conduct drug screening and alcohol testing on nearly 1,000 railway employees nationwide following a bus collision incident. May 17, 2026 – Pichit Kunathammarak, Director-General of the Railway Transport Department, announced that the department has issued an emergency directive to the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to implement drug screening and alcohol testing for "employees responsible for operating and controlling train movements" as well as "ground-level employees involved in safety operations" such as barrier operators and track switching staff before each shift, using a "Zero Tolerance" policy with no exceptions. Any employees found to test positive will be immediately suspended from duty, face serious disciplinary hearings, and be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The department will also conduct a thorough investigation into how substance-using employees were allowed to operate trains that carry large numbers of passengers. "We will prioritize drug testing for railway employees performing duties on trains, particularly drivers, of which there are approximately 948 in total. Anyone found with drugs will face full legal prosecution," the director-general stated.
