Chatchai Steps Down as Bangkok Governor, Announces Run for Second Term
Bangkok Governor Chatchai Sittipan stepped down on May 18 and announced his candidacy for a second term, citing public support and infrastructure improvements during his first four-year tenure.
On May 18, 2026 at 3:27 PM at Bangkok City Hall, Governor Chatchai Sittipan and his administrative team paid respects at the shrine. Chatchai explained that there was no auspicious timing involved—he simply needed to pay respects before 5 PM since he must exchange his access card upon leaving office.
When asked what blessings he sought, Chatchai said he prayed for all future developments to benefit the nation, emphasizing he did not pray for his own return to office. Instead, he only asked that whatever happens next be good for Thailand—if his return leads to positive outcomes, so be it; if it brings problems, then let it not occur.
Chatchai noted that his first term passed remarkably quickly, with happy times flying by. Regarding motivation for a second term, he cited public support and improved living standards as his driving force. He mentioned that in his first term, he addressed major infrastructure issues like tunnels and electric trains that many people didn't fully recognize, while also tackling smaller problems and boosting productivity through appropriate technology.
Another motivation came from his son, who encouraged him to run again before joking that he should listen to his son. Chatchai then went to his office to collect remaining belongings, noting that most items had already been gradually removed over two months—primarily books and religious items accumulated during his tenure. He revealed that throughout his four years in office, he rarely worked from this room, preferring to meet with his team in another office for easier coordination. All government equipment has been returned, including a newly purchased laptop with personal data transferred.
Chatchai mentioned that tonight he plans to fly abroad to see his son and continue working—this is merely a new beginning, not an ending. He reflected that life is not merchandise and therefore has no expiration date; after completing his governorship, he must continue forward. He plans to take some rest and exercise abroad, as domestic affairs have been hectic over the past three to four months.
