22 Sri Lankan Monks Arrested Smuggling 110 kg of Cannabis in Luggage Upon Return to Thailand

Twenty-two Buddhist monks were arrested at Sri Lanka's airport with 110 kg of cannabis hidden in their luggage after returning from a Thailand trip, with a 23rd monk believed to have organized the smuggling operation.

28 Apr Khaosod

Customs officials at Sri Lanka's airport arrested 22 Buddhist monks returning from Thailand after discovering 110 kilograms of cannabis hidden in secret compartments of their luggage. According to BBC reporting on April 28, officials found each monk was carrying approximately 5 kg of cannabis mixed in with educational materials and candy.

The monks had completed a four-day trip to Thailand sponsored by an anonymous benefactor. Following their apprehension, a 23rd monk—believed to be the organizer of the trip who did not travel with the group—was arrested. This monk had allegedly told the others that the packages were donations that would be collected upon their arrival.

Evidence found on some of the monks' phones showed images and videos of non-religious activities during the trip, including casual clothing and typical holiday activities. All 22 monks were detained for seven days of further investigation after appearing in court on Sunday, April 26. Police acknowledge that some monks may not have known they were transporting illegal substances, and investigations continue to identify additional suspects involved in the scheme.

Songkhla Province has partnered with Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF) and the CPF Running Club to organize a charity walk-and-run event called 'CPF RUN FOR CHARITY 2026.' More than 1,600 dedicated runners came together to share "the power of giving," raising 785,000 baht after expenses, which was donated to Tinsulanonda Fisheries College to support education and contribute to the construction of a historical learning center dedicated to General Prem Tinsulanonda.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Winit Theppanit, District Officer of Songkhla, alongside Kittisak Kwaopanich, Director of Tinsulanonda Fisheries College, and Bunserm Charoonwattana, Senior Managing Director of CPF's Livestock Feed Business Division. The District Officer stated that this collaboration between CPF and Songkhla Province reflects the collective strength of all sectors—government, private, and public—working together to build a strong and sustainable society while promoting health and fostering a spirit of sharing in Thai society.

"The funds from this activity will be used to develop education and support the construction of a monument to General Prem Tinsulanonda within the college, serving as a historical learning resource and source of inspiration for youth," said Kittisak Kwaopanich, Director of Tinsulanonda Fisheries College.

Meanwhile, Bunserm Charoonwattana revealed that CPF is organizing 'CPF RUN FOR CHARITY' for the 11th consecutive year under the concept of "doing good for society." Over the past decade, runners have collectively covered more than 600,000 kilometers, and CPF has delivered a total of 18 million baht to hospitals and various organizations throughout the country to support the purchase of medical equipment and strengthen the public health system, benefiting society as a whole. This aligns with the CP Group's "3 Benefits for Sustainability" principle.

Thailand urges protection of key waterways at UN Security Council

Thailand urged the UN Security Council to protect critical maritime waterways, warning that disruptions to key sea routes could destabilize global trade and energy supplies.

28 Apr Khaosod

Thailand has stressed that the protection of vital maritime waterways is a shared global responsibility, warning that disruptions to key sea routes could threaten global trade, energy supplies and economic stability.

Speaking at a United Nations Security Council open debate on "The Safety and Protection of Waterways in the Maritime Domain" on 27 April 2026, chaired by Bahrain, Thailand's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Cherdchai Chaivaivid, highlighted risks to strategic maritime chokepoints such as the Strait of Hormuz.

He said any disruption in such areas endangers seafarers, disrupts global energy flows, and has wider consequences for the global economy.

Thailand called on all parties to exercise restraint, uphold international law, and respect freedom of navigation.

The Thai delegation also reiterated support for cooperation, dialogue and diplomacy to ensure that the high seas remain open, secure, and governed by the rule of law.

Karen forces seize Myanmar military base in strategic Mutraw area

Karen armed forces captured a key Myanmar military base in the Mutraw area on April 25 after a siege-style offensive, marking another resistance victory in the strategic border region since the 2021 coup.

28 Apr Khaosod

KAYIN STATE — Karen armed forces have seized a Myanmar military base in the strategic Mutraw (Hpapun) area, following sustained attacks by allied resistance groups, according to local reports.

On 28 April 2026, the Karen Information Center (KIC) reported that the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), in coordination with allied forces, captured the "Kabaw Tu" base from the Myanmar military on 25 April in Lu Thaw Township.

The base, located in the Mutraw area between Hpapun and Kamamaung, had been considered a key strategic position used by Myanmar forces to control transport routes and security in the region for nearly 30 years.

Sources said the operation was carried out through a siege-style offensive, with Myanmar forces attempting to defend the position while also relying heavily on airstrikes to repel the advance.

KNLA Brigade 5 spokesperson Lt. Col. Saw Kler Doh said Myanmar forces conducted near-daily aerial bombardments prior to the capture, but the base was fully seized by KNLA troops at around midday on 25 April.

Following the takeover, KNLA and allied forces conducted clearing operations in surrounding areas. However, details on seized weapons and casualties from both sides have not been disclosed.

The capture of Kabaw Tu follows a series of recent gains by resistance forces. In late March, KNLA and allies also seized two other Myanmar military bases in northern Hpapun, including Tae Nay Jo and Kaw Soe Jo.

Since the 2021 coup in Myanmar, the Mutraw area has become a key battleground between the military and resistance forces, with ongoing clashes reported across the region.

Currently, around 10 Myanmar military bases remain in the area, including the main Hpapun base, while pro-military Border Guard Forces continue to reinforce positions amid fears of escalating fighting.

Foundation One Founder Moved to Tears While Helping 21-Year-Old Woman Whose Mother Is a Methamphetamine Addict and Abuses Family Members, With Third-Party Involvement

A 21-year-old woman sought help from Foundation One after her methamphetamine-addicted mother repeatedly beat her father and five siblings, stole their earnings, and involved third parties in the abuse in Samut Prakan Province. The foundati

28 Apr Khaosod

Foundation One founder was moved to tears after hearing the 21-year-old woman's plea for help regarding her methamphetamine-addicted mother who beats family members—her father and five younger siblings—steals all their money, and involves a third party. On April 28, 2026, at Chim Phli Police Station in Samut Prakan Province, the Foundation One founder, along with social welfare officer Nattama Treeratthanaphon and officer Ekkarin Thaokwang from the provincial child and family shelter, brought the family of 43-year-old Charun to meet Police Captain Prachet Pongsathon, reporting domestic violence by an addicted family member.

The situation began when 21-year-old Chuli, the eldest daughter, sought the Foundation's help, describing how her mother (referred to as Nang A) engages in drug use and abuses her father and five younger siblings: two brothers aged 15 and 14, two sisters aged 7 and 5, and a 7-month-old baby brother.

After hearing the family's story, the Foundation founder wept. When he spoke with the mother, she admitted to using methamphetamine, having started through her husband's influence. She claimed she hit her children because she wanted them to be good, denying any intent to harm them, and mentioned she had last used methamphetamine the previous Sunday.

The Foundation founder revealed that Chuli, who fled to Samut Prakan Province, could no longer tolerate her mother's behavior and reported that the mother is addicted to methamphetamine and involves third parties. When angry, the mother loses control, beating and injuring her father and siblings over decades using weapons including knives, metal objects, and sharpened sticks. The father earns 500-1,000 baht daily, but the mother takes every single baht. She beats and verbally abuses the children for minor mistakes, psychologically pressures her sons—one has attempted suicide—and has caused severe injuries including head and eyebrow wounds and bruised, swollen arms. She even beat the 7-month-old baby to spite the father. Despite the father's earnings, the family never eats well. She gives the children only 15-20 baht daily for school, sometimes nothing, and never buys them clothes or shoes—they wear only donated items.

Previously, the older son and daughter convinced Chuli to help them escape. Another son later asked to flee as well, having gone two days without food while being forced to care for siblings around the clock. Regarding the third parties, the mother has been giving them money stolen from the father and Chuli for transportation costs; she currently has 2-3 third-party associates.

Initially, the Foundation and officials brought all the children into the protective care of the provincial child and family shelter. Subsequently, officials will mediate between the parents. The father wants a divorce and to raise the children himself, but the mother refuses and also wants custody of the children.

Only Concrete Pillars Remain: Chinese Children's House in Fake Birth Registration Scheme Demolished Since 2566, Now Overgrown with Weeds

Authorities investigating a fake birth registration scheme discovered that a house where 27 foreign nationals—mostly Chinese—were illegally registered as residents had been demolished in 2566, leaving only concrete pillars and weeds at the

28 Apr Khaosod

On April 28, 2569, Dr. Kittipong Pongsurvet, Sub-district Mayor of Pho Klang, visited the Luang Pradoo area in Huai Thaeng District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, to investigate allegations that a sub-district registrar had illegally registered 27 foreign nationals, predominantly Chinese, with fake birth certificates. Three of these individuals had falsified registrations listing their residence at a house in Luang Pradoo Village 7. However, when officials inspected the property, they discovered the house had been demolished and removed from the site. The location now sits empty, containing only abandoned concrete pillars overgrown with weeds on land measuring approximately 1 rai 3 ngan.

A former village assistant confirmed the house was demolished and relocated in 2566. The actual homeowner, Saeng Chan, age 55, disclosed that she demolished and relocated her house in July 2566 and had notified the sub-district municipality with official documentation. She was unaware that others had used her old address until the recent sub-district elections in early 2569, when she discovered multiple people, including three children with foreign-sounding names, were registered at her former residence.

Dr. Kittipong stated that officials are gathering evidence and forwarding the case to provincial authorities, the National Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Department of Special Investigation to determine whether an organized network is behind the scheme. He expressed confidence that a single individual could not have orchestrated this fraud and that other parties must be involved.

The Thai Cycling Association has assembled its technical and coaching staff to comprehensively analyze the performance of Thai cyclists across all disciplines competing in preparation for the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, scheduled from September 19 to October 4. The analysis covers road, track, mountain bike, and BMX categories to develop improved training and competition strategies. The effort extends beyond the Asian Games to earning qualification points for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Lieutenant General Decha Hemkasemsri, vice president of the Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC), president of the Asian Cycling Federation (ACF), and president of the Thai Cycling Association, revealed that the association is preparing detailed analysis of Thai cyclists' performances. He noted that Thailand's track sprint team of Chay Angsuthasawit, Yeanyong Phetrat, and Narsetrattada Boonma recently achieved 6th place in Malaysia, improving the world team sprint ranking from 19th to 15th place as of April 28.

The analysis will also compare rival nations expected at the Asian Games in Japan, including hosts Japan, China, Malaysia, South Korea, Hong Kong, India, and Taiwan, which have shown rapid development. Chachoengsao FC Demands Clarification Over Referee's Performance in Muangthong United Draw

Chachoengsao FC has lodged a formal complaint with Thailand's Football Association over referee Songkran Bunmeekaert's performance in their 0-0 draw against Muangthong United, citing six controversial decisions including a missed penalty an

28 Apr Khaosod

Chachoengsao FC has formally lodged a complaint with the Football Association of Thailand requesting clarification on referee Songkran Bunmeekaert's performance during their April 26 Thai League 1 match against Muangthong United at Chachoengsao's Daikin Stadium, which ended 0-0.

The match between already-safe Chachoengsao and 14th-placed Muangthong United, who desperately needed points to avoid relegation, was overseen by FIFA Elite-level referee Songkran Bunmeekaert, but the club claims there were numerous questionable decisions throughout.

Chachoengsao has submitted a formal letter to the Football Association detailing six specific controversial incidents:

1. Minute 58:40 - Referee blew for a foul on Chachoengsao's Uge van Lingen before a potential goal-scoring opportunity, awarding Muangthong player No. 2 a yellow card despite it being an advantage situation for Chachoengsao.

2. Minute 63:30 - After Kittipong Sansnit was fouled by Tristong Do in the penalty area, the referee called a free kick rather than a penalty. The VAR intervened and reviewed the incident, but the referee ultimately decided it was outside the box, despite the contact clearly occurring within the penalty area.

3. Minute 74:10 - George Philippe deliberately kicked the ball away to waste time and should have received a second yellow card (resulting in a red), but the referee did not issue one.

4. Minute 91:38 - After Kittipong evaded Muangthong defenders and had a clear scoring opportunity, the referee called a foul and gave a yellow card to Muangthong's Songwut Kraikhrue, despite this being a clear advantage situation for Chachoengsao.

5. Minute 94:22 - Jonathan Bolinga appeared to step on Muangthong's player No. 2, but no yellow card was issued. Had the referee called this, Bolinga would have received a second yellow and been sent off.

6. Minute 96:34 - Kevin Ignazio made a pass that bypassed Muangthong's defensive line, but the referee called a foul despite it being an advantage situation for Chachoengsao.

Chachoengsao FC is requesting clarification from the Referees Committee and the Disciplinary and Conduct Committee to ensure the football community has correct understanding and that refereeing standards remain consistent across all matches.
