A lightning strike during a severe thunderstorm has killed one cassava farm worker and critically injured two others in Udon Thani Province. At 3:20 p.m. on May 17, police received a report of a lightning strike in a cassava field near Ban Non Samran, Bung Kaew Subdistrict, Non Sa-Ad District. The victim, Suna, 69, was struck and killed instantly. Two others, Wilai, 64, and Thinakorn, 58, sustained critical injuries. Emergency responders rushed the injured to the hospital. According to investigation, the three men were working in the cassava field when a severe thunderstorm suddenly developed. They ran to take shelter under a large tree, but were struck by lightning at that location, resulting in the fatality and critical injuries.

On May 17, Precha Lalun, Deputy Governor of the Thailand Sports Authority (SAT) for Excellence in Sports and Sports Science, held a press conference announcing the hosting of the 42nd National Youth Games 'Surin Games' and the 9th National Senior Games 'Muang Chang Games.' The event was attended by Chamroem Whaengpetch, Governor of Surin Province; Veerachai Prasertso, Deputy Governor of Surin; Thanyporn Moongcheraiporn, Chairman of the Surin Provincial Administrative Organization; Wiratchai Setthapatnajai, Chairman of the Surin Chamber of Commerce; Tatchanath Thongprakop, Deputy Governor of SAT for Strategy and Information Technology; and SAT executives at Lily Room 1, Nipa Garden Hotel in Surat Thani Province.

Precha stated that following SAT's assignment for Surin to host the 42nd National Youth Games 'Surin Games,' the province has scheduled the event between March 19-30, 2570, and the 9th National Senior Games 'Muang Chang Games' between April 3-10, 2570. SAT has mandated that the host province organize the competitions using the white sports model (BCG) while supporting the government's policy in collaboration with anti-smoking foundations and the Health Promotion Foundation (HPF) to make all sporting competitions in Thailand smoke-free and e-cigarette-free zones, promoting the health of athletes and spectators.

Chamroem stated that Surin Province is fully prepared to host national-level sporting competitions. Previous meetings with relevant government agencies have ensured cooperation to successfully execute the competitions according to objectives. The province will use Si Nong Sports Stadium as the main venue while dispersing competition grounds to educational institutions and various agencies throughout Surin Province. Additionally, the province has arranged elephant taxi services to facilitate athletes, coaches, officials, and participants traveling to the event. Preparations are underway in all areas, including competition grounds, safety and traffic management, medical services, welcoming of athletes and officials, opening and closing ceremonies, and public relations to promote the hosting across the province and encourage community participation. The 'Surin Games' will be held under the slogan 'Games of Friendship' with mascots 'Brother Friendship' and 'Uncle Elephant Rangaeng.'

Dr. Kae Suwanna Silpakosa, manager of Thailand's men's national ice hockey team, posted a sorrowful message announcing the passing of 'Thane' Chanokchalom Limpinpetch, a Thai national ice hockey player. In her post, Dr. Kae wrote: "Today we have lost 'Thane,' someone beloved by all of us. Thane will always remain in our memories... Thane Chanokchalom Limpinpetch was one of Thailand's leading ice hockey players who competed in world championships, the Winter Asian Games, and was part of the historic roster competing in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games hosted by Thailand. Thane was among the pioneering athletes who helped Thailand win the Division 3 Group A world championship and secured promotion to Division 2.
