Surat Thani police have arrested a suspect accused of stealing from a young athlete competing in the National Youth Games within 48 hours. On May 10, 2025, Police Major General Suwat Suksri, commander of Surat Thani Provincial Police, along with deputy commander Police Colonel Sirichai Suksart, Muang Surat Thani Station Commander Police Colonel Pornrong Garonarjai, and deputy station commander Police Lieutenant Yot Chaorai, apprehended 49-year-old Thammavet, nicknamed Yod, and recovered a mobile phone and backpack.

The arrest followed an incident on the evening of May 8 when the suspect allegedly stole belongings from athletes who had traveled to compete in the National Youth Games in Surat Thani. The case drew significant attention on social media and caused considerable embarrassment to the province as host.

Investigating officers moved quickly following the report and managed to arrest the suspect within 48 hours at a residence in Tambon Tha Thong Mai, Amphoe Kanthaladis, Surat Thani Province. They recovered an iPhone 17 before taking him in for questioning.

The suspect initially confessed before being transferred to Muang Surat Thani Police Station, where he faces charges of theft or receiving stolen property.

In 2019, she was selected to represent Thai youth in a science project competition in the United States. However, a critical opportunity nearly slipped away when her visa was denied due to her lack of Thai nationality. While this might have defeated many, for Namphuing it became motivation to push forward relentlessly. After obtaining Thai citizenship, she successfully competed and won a Special Award from USAID for humanitarian assistance for her research on developing seed coatings made from local rubber trees to increase survival rates of rain-fed rice crops—demonstrating genuine commitment to using science to improve community quality of life.

Namephuing graduated from the Medical Technology program at Chiang Mai University and served as president of the student association, showcasing leadership and dedication to public service. She currently works as a medical technician, a profession reflecting her commitment to caring for people through health science knowledge.

She has been invited to meetings with UNHCR alongside representatives from 16 countries to exchange solutions on statelessness at the regional level—a significant step for someone once "invisible to the system" who has become an important voice for those facing similar circumstances.

A key aspect of her identity is driving the "DARE YOUR DREAM" project, which creates educational opportunities for stateless and unregistered children and youth in Thailand—work she has pursued for over four years. The project believes "education" is the key to opening doors to better futures for all children.

The initiative aims to provide universal and equitable access to basic education while advancing higher education opportunities, life skills development, and hope for the next generation so they can grow with quality and secure career prospects. "DARE YOUR DREAM" also aims to expand educational opportunities to international levels to ensure stateless children receive equitable rights to education globally.

Ignored Friends' Warnings, Man Jumps into Deep Canal Complaining of Heat, Then Drowns. On May 10, 2569, rescue unit Hook 31 at Non Thai district in Nakhon Ratchasima province received a report of a missing person in the water at Lam Chiang Rai Canal, Ban Nong Krasang village, Dan Jak subdistrict, Non Thai district, Nakhon Ratchasima province. The unit deployed to the scene and requested support from underwater rescue and special operation teams. Hook 31 brought diving equipment to search for the missing person. The canal where the incident occurred was approximately 4 meters deep. Rescue divers conducting the search found the body after 10 minutes. The deceased was identified as Mr. Theerayut, 39 years old, a native of Nakhon Phanom, who was submerged under the canal. His body was brought up and sent for autopsy at Non Thai Hospital. According to the police investigation at Non Thai station, Mr. Theerayut was from Nakhon Phanom working in Nakhon Ratchasima. During his weekend break, he came to visit a friend's house. Before the incident, he complained about the hot weather and went swimming alone. However, friends and villagers warned him not to enter because the water was deep. Mr. Theerayut did not listen and claimed he had swum in similar waters back in Nakhon Phanom. Shortly after entering the water, he disappeared and drowned. Neighbors who witnessed the incident reported it to rescue unit Hook 31, who recovered his body submerged 4 meters below the surface. Police believe that due to the extreme heat, Mr. Theerayut may have suffered heat shock and lost consciousness, leading to his drowning.
