Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United's captain, has responded to criticism from Roy Keane, the legendary Red Devil midfielder, accusing him of distorting comments about prioritizing personal statistics over team success, while Keane continues to jab the younger player on social media.
Keane previously criticized Bruno for being at the center of "theatrical dramatics" following Manchester United's 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest in the penultimate weekend of the season. The Irish national team legend claimed the Portuguese international prioritizes personal achievement over team interests in his drive to break the single-season assist record.
"After the Forest match, he gave an interview saying that Manchester United's captain said many times I should have shot but I passed the ball. Wow, how can a footballer like you compete by focusing only on personal statistics? He won't win trophies if he thinks that way about the team," Keane stated.
In his latest response, Bruno clarified that Keane misrepresented his actual comments. Bruno said he actually stated: "Today there might have been moments when I should have passed instead of shooting. I'm very happy to have made assists, but more importantly, I'm happy we won and finished the season beautifully."
Bruno expressed hope of clarifying things with his senior teammate, saying: "As I always say, I don't mind criticism. I accept it from everyone and have never retaliated. People have opinions—they think it's good or bad, that's their right. What I don't like is when people lie about things. In Roy Keane's case, what he said is basically a lie because either he didn't see the other interview or can't say I said something I didn't say. Fortunately for me, everything is recorded."
"I accept his criticism. I accept that he may or may not like me as a player or as a person, but what I don't like is him putting words in my mouth that I never said. That's the only thing I don't like," Bruno added.
However, following Bruno's response, Keane posted a drawing of a donkey braying loudly on Instagram with the caption: "Too much attention makes the donkey think it's a lion," seemingly taking another jab at Bruno without explicitly naming him.
This isn't the first time current Manchester United players have clashed with Red Devil legends. Earlier this season, Lisandro Martínez had a dispute with Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt after they criticized his height and his ability to compete with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland in the Manchester derby.
