Record 274 Climbers Summit Mount Everest in Single Day from Nepal Side, Breaking All-Time Record

A record 274 climbers summited Mount Everest on May 20 from the Nepal side, breaking the previous single-day record of 223 climbers set in 2019.

18h ago Khaosod

Nepal revealed that 274 climbers successfully summited Mount Everest on May 20, a record number representing the highest count of people to reach the world's highest peak in a single day from the Nepali side. Tour operators confirmed there were no climbers on the Tibetan side this year as Chinese authorities had not issued any permits. Rishi Bhandari, secretary general of Nepal's Expedition Operators Association, stated this exceeds the previous record of 223 climbers on May 22, 2019, and noted the final figure could increase as some successful summiteers may not yet have reported their achievements to base camp. Nepal issued 492 permits for Everest climbing during this spring season, with each climber required to pay up to $15,000 (approximately 489,900 baht). The fee increase reflects stricter control measures implemented after Nepal faced issues with overcrowding on Everest, which has frequently led to congested, delayed, and life-threatening climbs.

On May 22, 2569, authorities reported progress in the investigation into the shooting of Phra Athikan Bunlert Akpunyo, 64, the abbot of Wat Krajeom Thong in Muang District, Kamphaengphet Province. He sustained serious injuries while standing in his monk's quarters. Muang Kamphaengphet police continue to gather evidence to identify the perpetrator. Gunpowder residue tests were conducted on 12 close associates, with initial results from 9 individuals (6 monks and 3 lay people) showing no traces of gunpowder residue on their bodies or clothing. Three additional individuals await forensic results, including two suspects whose names are being withheld. Police confirmed that footprints discovered in the cassava field behind the temple represent a crucial lead, with approximately 10 distinct prints heading toward the Ping River area—a potential escape route. The footprints show clear sock impressions with a pattern suggesting the person paused mid-stride before continuing. The abbot subsequently spoke with reporters while recovering at a relative's home. He stated that the attack likely has nothing to do with money lending, as he has only loaned small amounts that have been repaid or are being repaid regularly. He expressed doubt about suspicions surrounding Phloen, as that individual has not frequented the temple recently and they maintain normal relations. Regarding the shooting itself, the abbot recalled that he was eating instant noodles when someone suddenly opened his door and fired. He could not identify the shooter as he did not recognize them. As for his relationship with the lay devotee Lamyai, the abbot confirmed they have been close for approximately ten years.

Mountain Guide Faces Charges Over Three Deaths on Mount Dukono Climb Despite Ban

A mountain guide in Indonesia faces negligence charges after three climbers died in a volcanic eruption on Mount Dukono on May 8, despite an official ban on climbing the active volcano since April.

19h ago Khaosod

Police in North Halmahera have named Reza Selang, 35, as a suspect in charges of negligence resulting in death following a volcanic eruption on Mount Dukono on May 8 that killed three people: two Singaporeans named Shahin Muhrez Abdul Hamid and Timothy Heng, and an Indonesian national named Angel Krichela Praditya. Selang led a group of eight guides and twelve climbers, including nine Singaporeans, up the active volcano early in the morning on May 8. A major eruption occurred minutes after the group reached the summit. Although local authorities had banned climbing Mount Dukono since April 17 due to increased volcanic activity, Selang claims he was not aware of the ban. According to North Halmahera Police Chief Erlichson Pasaribu, Selang has not been detained but his status could change depending on his cooperation with police. Authorities identified Selang as a suspect for two reasons: proceeding with the climb despite the ban, and climbing without coordination with the government volcano observation center, which monitors the volcano at alert level 2 out of 4. The case will proceed through Indonesian legal channels, with police conducting further investigation and compiling evidence to present to the local prosecutor, who will determine whether to file formal charges.

Shocking: Student van attempts to breach crossing gate as train operator makes emergency stop

A student shuttle van stalled on railroad tracks after attempting to breach a crossing barrier, forcing an emergency train stop just days after a May 16 collision killed eight people.

21h ago Khaosod

A shocking incident occurred when a student shuttle van attempted to breach a railroad crossing barrier and stalled on the tracks, forcing the crossing attendant to urgently signal an approaching train to make an emergency stop. This occurred just days after the May 16 tragedy in which a train collided with a bus parked on railroad tracks, killing 8 people and injuring many others. Facebook user Suresiang Plabpla Saworn posted a video of a student shuttle van attempting to drive through a railroad crossing while a train was approaching. According to the post: "An early morning scare—a student shuttle van tried to force through the crossing barrier and ended up stalling on the tracks. The crossing attendant had to frantically signal the train operator to brake hard. Residents and officials were waving and shouting for the driver to hurry and get out, but the van just sat there on the tracks. The crossing attendant was put in an impossible position, having to run out and try to get the van moving. Fortunately, the train operator braked from a distance...but what a mess. The crossing attendant's life was in just as much danger as anyone else." After the video was shared, many commenters strongly criticized the van driver for operating the vehicle so recklessly without regard for safety.
