15h ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suthep Thaugsuban made remarks during a breakfast roundtable meeting with MEDEF International at Salon Foch in Paris, with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul presiding. Suthep noted that this year marks 170 years of diplomatic relations and 340 years of initial contact between Thailand and France, reflecting their enduring friendship and multifaceted cooperation.

In economic and trade matters, bilateral trade exceeded $5 billion annually, with over 290 French companies operating in Thailand and creating more than 45,000 quality jobs. Suthep emphasized Thailand's three guiding principles for strategic partnerships: mutual benefit, high standards and quality, and open and balanced partnerships with all parties. She reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to international standards, transparency, and regulatory alignment, including progress toward OECD membership.

Regarding the Thailand-EU Free Trade Agreement, Suthep stated Thailand's strong commitment to accelerating negotiations. After nearly two years and eight rounds of talks, the ninth round is scheduled for late June in Brussels. Thailand aims to resolve outstanding issues quickly, projecting the deal could increase bilateral trade by at least 40 percent.

Suthep stressed Thailand's strategic advantages as a "Gateway to ASEAN and Asia," positioned at the center of Asia with key connections along north-south and east-west economic corridors. This makes Thailand an ideal location for foreign companies seeking to expand into ASEAN markets, offering one of the strongest options for French businesses entering the region.

High-Society Figure Clears Air on Being Linked to 1990s Actress's Child Breaking Restaurant Window, Offers to Help Fund Lawsuit Against Critics

A prominent socialite's family was cleared of involvement in a restaurant window-breaking incident after her public defense of the unnamed actress and child drew criticism on social media, with the wife offering to fund a lawsuit against th

15h ago Khaosod

The family of Nawin Tar has been cleared of involvement following clarification from Namphueng (Hisonan'amhuan), his wife, regarding criticism over a 1990s actress's child playing rough and breaking a restaurant's glass door. The restaurant owner initially had a civil conversation with the actress, but when damage costs of over 10,000 baht were presented, the actress stopped responding to calls and messages.

On social media, speculation linked the incident to Nawin Tar, with comments directed at him and criticism extending to the child. A popular social media page hinted at a 1990s-era actress who was once famous but hasn't appeared in recent work, has two children, and confirmed the family is not related to Nawin Tar.

Namphueng went live on social media to address the issue, firmly stating no connection to her own family and expressing sympathy for the child being attacked in comments. She offered to help hire a lawyer for the actress if she wanted to sue those criticizing her child.

Namphueng stated: "People sent me news and everyone wrote 'N.T., N.T.' saying the child broke the glass. I apologize. The child didn't know any better. You can't blame a child. Whether it's our child or someone else's, if they grow up they won't do it again. They don't want their parents to lose money. But adults with negative thoughts sit around criticizing."

She continued: "Don't say the parents taught poorly. Hasn't your child ever made a mistake? Thai society gives chances to people. Those who don't fit society's norms sit commenting for attention. If not, new standards are coming and you'll be sued."

Navin Tar added during the live stream: "If you're going to criticize, criticize the parents, not the child. Don't mention the child."

Namphueng further stated: "If that person is being harassed and criticized in comments, I will help them file a lawsuit myself. Stop saying the child wasn't educated, wasn't disciplined—blame the parents, not the child."

She concluded: "This makes me angry, not because of our child, but because you're talking about a child. Don't say the child wasn't taught. Don't criticize the child. How old are they?"

Namphueng announced her willingness to fund a lawsuit for the parents: "Today I can speak because we have money to hire a lawyer. But if that child's parents are facing financial difficulties right now, they might not have money to sue commenters. I want to announce here that I'm willing to send a lawyer to help them file a lawsuit. This would set a standard for Thai society and stop strange criticism that traumatizes children. Because your comment today is online, when the child grows up and searches, it becomes part of their history, their family's history. If it were your family, you wouldn't want this to happen."

Prayut Challenges Anutin to Resign if Bhumjaithai Constitution Draft Fails Second Referendum

Pheu Thai deputy leader Prayut challenges PM Anutin to resign if Bhumjaithai's constitution draft fails a second referendum, citing international precedent for accountability when governments lose public votes.

16h ago Khaosod

At 9 a.m. on May 26, 2025 at Parliament, Prayut Wachchirasindhu, a list-based MP and deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party, explained the meaning of the "blue system" as a political faction exploiting loopholes in the 2017 Constitution. These loopholes allow Senate selection to be self-selecting and disconnected from the public, enabling political groups to manipulate and control Senate votes. By controlling the Senate, they can then control appointments to independent organizations, consolidating power across the executive, legislative, and independent agencies.

When asked if the blue system would complicate constitutional amendments, Prayut said the challenge is real, but the critical factor for success is the voice of 21 million citizens who voted in the referendum demanding a new constitution. They want to escape political factions created through collusion and weak oversight mechanisms.

Asked how 21 million voices can counter the blue system in Parliament, Prayut outlined three ways: First, Pheu Thai representatives will be seated in Parliament as the opposition to scrutinize the process. Second, he believes the 21 million referendum votes will bind all parties to proceed with a new constitution. Third, the public's voice matters for a potential second referendum, since if Bhumjaithai uses its parliamentary majority to push through Article 256 amendments favoring their draft—which risks monopolizing power by concentrating authority with the Senate—and if most citizens reject it in a second referendum, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul should take political responsibility.

Prayut referenced international standards: when governments clearly take a position on referendums and results contradict them, prime ministers typically resign to show accountability, citing the British Brexit referendum example.

When asked if a second referendum campaign against the new constitution draft is possible, Prayut said not to rush to conclusions, as they're currently preparing for the first reading. The goal is aligning the draft with Pheu Thai's three principles and passing the first reading to find common ground in the subcommittee. He insisted the people's voice has meaning: "If Bhumjaithai uses parliamentary majority to make the final draft match theirs entirely..."

Former F1 Driver Mika Salo Injured in Suspected Bangkok Knife Attack

Former F1 driver Mika Salo required 28 stitches after a suspected knife attack by a motorcycle rider in Bangkok, with hospital staff reporting multiple similar slash wound cases that evening.

16h ago Khaosod

BANGKOK — On May 26, 2026, former Formula One driver Mika Salo disclosed that he required 28 stitches to close a deep leg wound from a suspected knife attack by a passing motorcycle rider while crossing a Bangkok street.

Salo, 59, told Finnish media the attack happened Tuesday evening near his hotel as he crossed at a pedestrian crossing. He initially felt only a slight impact and continued walking until a bystander alerted him that blood was streaming down his leg. Looking down, he discovered his shoe was soaked in blood.

The former Ferrari substitute driver was taken by taxi to a nearby hospital, where doctors discovered a deep open wound to his calf. Salo explained that doctors had to stitch both muscle and skin separately—eight stitches in the muscle and 20 in the skin—totaling 28 stitches.

Doctors suspected a knife or sharp object caused the injury, as the wound was deep, clean, and straight, according to Salo's account to Finnish media. However, Thai authorities have not independently confirmed the exact cause.

Salo also reported that hospital staff told him several other patients had been treated for similar slash wounds that same evening and overnight, with some possibly occurring in the same area near his hotel. This suggests the incident may not have been isolated.

No official Thai police statement has confirmed whether the reported cases were connected or if a suspect has been identified.

"If this was intentional, they only tried to injure me," Salo was quoted as saying, noting that the outcome could have been far worse if the blade had struck a vital area.

Salo said he has been returning to the hospital for wound cleaning and dressing changes while taking antibiotics during his recovery in Bangkok. He praised Thailand's medical care, calling the doctors and hospitals efficient and professional.

Salo raced in Formula One from 1994 to 2002 for teams including Lotus, Tyrrell, Arrows, BAR, Ferrari, Sauber, and Toyota. He is best remembered for substituting for an injured Michael Schumacher at Ferrari during six races in the 1999 season.

Ko Pha-ngan Police Arrest British Man for Drunk Driving Hit-and-Run Against Renowned Doctor, Seek Detention and Oppose Bail

A 51-year-old British man was arrested in Ko Samui on charges of drunk driving, hit-and-run, and cocaine possession after striking a renowned doctor on Ko Pha-ngan on May 23; police oppose bail citing serious offenses and flight risk.

16h ago Khaosod

At 8:30 a.m. on May 26, 2025, at Ban Nai Thon Pier in Ko Samui District, Surat Thani Province, Ko Pha-ngan police investigators presented 51-year-old British national Wilcox to Ko Samui Provincial Court requesting detention and opposing bail. The suspect is accused of recklessly driving a motorcycle, striking a pedestrian causing severe injury, and fleeing the scene. The incident occurred on the road between Ko Pha-ngan Hospital and Tong Sala on May 23, injuring Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thirasak Kaewamontavong, 53, a renowned medical instructor specializing in respiratory diseases and critical care.

Detailed investigations led to crucial evidence showing that 17 minutes before the incident at 8:30 p.m., CCTV footage captured Wilcox purchasing two cans of alcoholic beverages from a supermarket 1.4 kilometers from the accident site, then walking while drinking to his parked motorcycle before riding out and striking the victim. Witnesses confirmed that after the incident, Wilcox displayed loud, aggressive behavior consistent with intoxication. Medical tests confirmed the presence of Type 2 narcotic cocaine in his system. Additionally, Wilcox lacks a Thai or international driver's license, holds only a British license, and the motorcycle had unpaid annual taxes since early 2568 and no vehicle insurance coverage.

Police have filed seven charges against Wilcox: reckless driving causing severe injury to another person; hit-and-run without assistance; driving without a license; using an untaxed vehicle; using a vehicle without mandatory insurance; possession and use of cocaine; and drunk driving causing severe harm to another. During initial questioning, Wilcox denied charges related to hit-and-run and drunk driving causing harm. Police have requested his detention, opposing bail due to serious penalties, his foreign status, lack of fixed residence, and risk of fleeing the country. The victim's relatives have been kept informed of developments.

Police are also investigating a company associated with the suspect for potential legal violations, including possible use of Thai nationals as nominee shareholders to conduct illegal business operations on Ko Pha-ngan, with full legal proceedings to follow.

Education Minister Prasert Concerned About Children's Heavy Social Media Use, Attention Span Issues; Declares Urgent Priority with Two-Track Solution

Thailand's Education Minister warns that excessive social media use is damaging children's attention spans and declares the issue an urgent priority, proposing separate protective and educational strategies for younger and older students.

16h ago Khaosod

On May 26, 2569, Education Minister Prasert Jantarawongtong discussed the issue of children consuming excessive amounts of social media, resulting in diminished ability to focus on specific activities—a concern for society as a whole. Research shows that Thai children spend significant time on social media and watching short videos, causing attention span problems. The minister emphasized this is not a matter of blaming children or the platforms, but rather a challenge of the digital age. The Education Ministry considers this an urgent priority requiring immediate action to ensure Thai children develop into quality individuals.

The ministry is pursuing a two-track solution informed by models from other countries. For younger children whose brains are still developing, protective measures are necessary. For older children, instruction in proper digital technology skills and AI literacy is required. These are the ministry's responsibilities. The minister stated he will consult with relevant agencies promptly to increase children's focus and encourage appropriate social media use.

The minister acknowledged the serious concern that dangerous content is entering social media platforms and being consumed by youth. The ministry has implemented safety centers in schools working alongside student rights centers and education personnel to coordinate efforts. Going forward, there must be discussions about platform safety protocols, including age restrictions for accessing various platforms.

Prasit Urges Election Commission to Send Senate Vote-Buying Case Involving 229 People to Court, Cites Strong Evidence

Pheu Thai deputy leader Prasit Chawansakul urged the Election Commission to refer a vote-buying case involving 229 people—including over 130 senators—to court, citing strong evidence of identical ballot numbers and financial trails.

16h ago Khaosod

At 9:00 AM on May 26, 2025, at Parliament, Prasit Chawansakul, a list-based MP and deputy leader of the Pheu Thai Party, gave an interview regarding 89 senators who gathered to issue a statement criticizing Nattapong Ruangpanya-wit, a list-based senator and Pheu Thai Party leader, for alleged references to the "blue regime." Prasit used the opportunity to call on the public to monitor another group of over 130 senators whose names appear in Investigation Committee 16's report of the Election Commission (EC). That committee has voted to recommend that the EC refer the case to court to prosecute 229 people for senate vote-buying. This group includes over 130 senators plus a network of political party members, ministers, and national-level politicians—totaling over 90 additional individuals.

Prasit stated that the EC must make a decision within one month on whether to follow the investigation committee's recommendation and refer the case to court, or to dismiss and close it. The evidence in the committee's file includes numerous ballot numbers that are identical—contradicting mathematical probability—along with evidence of meetings, joint travel, financial trails, and hiring arrangements. This constitutes sufficiently strong evidence to warrant court review.

Comparing this to the red-number case 53/2568 from the past, the EC previously referred a case to court where the judge found guilt based solely on LINE chat messages between two individuals discussing vote trades. Given the far more substantial evidence in the current case, questions would arise if the EC decides not to refer it.

Should the EC vote against referral, it would invite accusations and prompt public questions about whether four of seven EC commissioners—who were endorsed by senators named in this case—are influencing the decision.

Deputy National Police Chief Coordinates with Chinese Embassy and Police to Rescue Four Chinese Citizens Deceived into Call Center Scam Operations in Myanmar

Thai police rescued four Chinese nationals deceived into a Myanmar call center scam operation after they entered Thailand legally in early May; authorities are investigating whether human trafficking charges apply.

16h ago Khaosod

On May 26, 2025, Deputy National Police Chief General Thatchai Pitanilabut held a press briefing at the National Victim Screening and Referral Center in Don Mueang to announce the successful rescue of four Chinese nationals who had been deceived into working at a call center scam operation in Myanmar. The operation involved cooperation from multiple police units and coordination with the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok.

According to the investigation, the four Chinese citizens legally entered Thailand on May 3, 2025, through Suvarnabhumi Airport via normal channels. After arrival, they checked into a hotel near the airport before traveling to Tak Province and crossing into Myanmar in a vehicle arranged by a Chinese friend who had recruited them with promises of business opportunities in Thailand.

During interviews, the victims stated their main purpose was to seek business opportunities, with Chiang Mai as their intended destination. Each had brought approximately 30,000 yuan and 10,000 baht in cash. However, investigators noted that all travel expenses—including airfare, transportation, and accommodation—had been covered by the Chinese recruiter.

The victims had shown awareness before departure by instructing their families to immediately report to Chinese police if contact could not be established. CCTV footage, travel records, and evidence did not show signs of abduction, detention, or physical coercion during their journey within Thailand.

Authorities continue investigating whether deception, coercion, threats, or exploitation occurred that would constitute human trafficking. The four individuals are currently undergoing the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) screening process to assess their status and provide legal protections. The process includes observation from the Chinese Embassy to ensure the victims' safety, dignity, and human rights are protected throughout the procedure.
