Italy Poised to Overtake Greece as Eurozone's Most Indebted Country with Debt at 138.6%

Italy is expected to become the eurozone's most indebted country by the end of 2026, with debt projected to peak at 138.6% of GDP, surpassing Greece for the first time in two decades. Greece's debt is forecast to decline to approximately 137% of GDP this year from 145.9% in 2025, marking its exit from the top position due to its stronger economic growth and debt reduction efforts. The shift reflects Greece's recovery from its prolonged financial crisis and improved economic performance compared to Italy's sluggish growth.

25 Apr Khaosod

Greece will cease to be the eurozone's most indebted country starting this year, as its public debt falls below Italy's, Reuters reported on April 25. Two senior officials revealed that Greece's debt is expected to decline to approximately 137% of GDP this year, down from 145.9% in 2025. Meanwhile, Italy's debt is forecast to peak at 138.6% in 2026, rising 1.5 percentage points from 137.1% of GDP in 2025, under the Treasury's multi-year budget plan released this week. Sources indicate that starting this year, Greece will no longer be the eurozone's most indebted country. The revised Greek debt ratio will be included in the country's multi-year fiscal plan to be submitted to the European Commission by month's end.

Italy's budget plan shows that Italian public debt will stabilize at approximately 138.5% in 2027 before declining to 137.9% in 2028 and 136.3% in 2029. Greece's public debt, the highest in the eurozone over the past two decades, has declined by more than 60 percentage points to 145.9% of GDP in 2025 from a peak of 209.4% in 2020. Italy's debt, meanwhile, has declined by approximately 17 percentage points during the same period.

Greece, recovering from a financial crisis lasting over a decade, has received three rounds of financial assistance totaling approximately 280 billion euros (over 10.6 trillion baht) and plans to repay approximately 7 billion euros from the first financial assistance package this year. Italy, on the other hand, has experienced economic growth below 1% consecutively for three years from 2023 to 2025, despite receiving billions of euros from the EU fund for economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Treasury's budget plan indicates this trend will continue through 2029.

In contrast, Greece's economy has grown consistently at more than 2% over the past three years, higher than the average for EU nations, driven by investment, domestic demand, and tourism.

Forest Improves Survival Chances After Dominant Display Crushes Sunderland

Nottingham Forest secured an emphatic 5-0 victory over Sunderland in the English Premier League, extending their gap from the relegation zone to 8 points. Forest's dominant performance included goals from Igor Jesus, Chris Wood, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Elliott Anderson as they remained unbeaten in their last 6 league matches. Sunderland, despite the heavy defeat, remain in a comfortable position in 11th place with their survival mathematically secured.

24 Apr Khaosod

Nottingham Forest has strengthened their Premier League survival prospects with a commanding display against Sunderland, extending their buffer from the relegation zone to 8 points. In the English Premier League match on April 24, 2025, Sunderland hosted Nottingham Forest at the Stadium of Light.

Forest struck first in the 17th minute from a right corner when Omari Hutchinson combined with Elliott Anderson before delivering a cross to the far post. Igor Jesus rose to head home powerfully, with the goal credited as an own goal by Trey Hume as the visitors took a 1-0 lead.

In the 31st minute, Chris Wood intercepted a misdirected pass from Robin Ruffels and the rebound fell to Morgan Gibbs-White, who quickly passed back into the penalty area for Wood to finish past Ruffels. Forest extended their lead to 2-0.

By the 34th minute, Nico Williams participated in a combination from a left corner before finding Igor Jesus, who headed to Gibbs-White. The midfielder executed a perfectly timed volley to make it 3-0.

In the 37th minute, Hutchinson delivered from the right wing. A Sunderland player deflected the ball outside the box to Ola Aina, who shot but the ball fell to Igor Jesus for another finish, making it 4-0 at halftime.

In the 61st minute of the second half, Sunderland earned a long-range free kick. Granit Xhaka lifted the ball forward for Norddjé Mukiele, who hooked it before it went behind, with Daniel Ballard nodding home. However, VAR review determined that Mukiele fouled Mats Sels after making contact with the ball, causing the Forest player to lose balance on defense. The goal was ruled out as a foul.

In the 90+5th minute, Nicolas Dominguez delivered into the penalty area for Taiwo Awoniyi to break free and lay off for Elliott Anderson, who finished to seal Forest's dominant 5-0 victory.

Forest extended their unbeaten league run to 6 consecutive matches, accumulating 39 points to hold 16th place, increasing their gap from the 18th-placed relegation zone (Tottenham Hotspur) to 8 points.

Como President Won't Block Fabregas If He Wants to Manage Chelsea

Como president says the club won't block manager Cesc Fabregas from joining Chelsea, where the Spanish former player is being considered as a managerial candidate after impressing in Serie A.

24 Apr Khaosod

Como's club president has stated they will not stand in the way of manager Cesc Fabregas if he wishes to leave the team to take over at Chelsea, the English Premier League club currently searching for a new head coach.

Chelsea recently dismissed Liam Rozenior after less than four months as manager. Currently, Caolum McFarlane is serving as interim head coach while the club urgently seeks a permanent replacement for next season.

Fabregas has delivered impressive results at Como, finishing 10th in Serie A last season and currently sitting in 5th place after 33 matches this season, keeping alive their hopes of securing a top-four spot. This has drawn attention to the Spanish manager as a potential candidate for Chelsea.

Fabregas previously played for Chelsea from 2014 to 2019, where he enjoyed considerable success, helping the club win two Premier League titles, as well as the FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Europa League.

Mirwan Suwarso, the Indonesian businessman and Como president, commented: "If that makes him happy, it's up to him. You always want your employees to stay as long as possible, but ultimately we don't own him. He's free to go work for Chelsea if he chooses."

24 Apr Khaosod

World No. 2 tennis player and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the French Open 2026 Grand Slam tournament due to a wrist injury.

Alcaraz has been dealing with a troublesome wrist injury that forced him to withdraw from the Barcelona Open after the first round. The 22-year-old racket then underwent examination to assess the severity of the injury and subsequently withdrew from the Italian Open as well, with the latest withdrawal being the French Open 2026, which kicks off on May 18, where he is the two-time defending champion.

"After the examination conducted today, we decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in the competitions in Rome or Roland Garros, while we assess the situation to determine when we will be able to return to competition," Alcaraz posted on Instagram.

"This is a difficult time for me, but I'm confident that we will get through this period and come back stronger."

Alcaraz started the year by winning his first Australian Open Grand Slam title, which made him the youngest male tennis player to complete the Grand Slam set. However, he lost the world No. 1 ranking to longtime rival Jannik Sinner from Italy this month after losing in the Monte Carlo Masters 2026 final.
