6 May Khaosod

A female teacher was startled when smoke suddenly poured from the air conditioning vent of her electric vehicle as she pulled up in front of a school calling for security assistance. Flames soon erupted from inside the smoke-filled car. Local residents quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher to spray the flames.

At 2:00 PM on May 6, 2025, Lieutenant Khrongsakdi Phonsri Sarawat from Ubon Ratchathani City Police Station received a report of an electric vehicle fire at the entrance to Pattanaudorn Developing Higher Education Preparatory School in Ubon Ratchathani province. Emergency responders and good Samaritans extinguished the fire with water before officers arrived to investigate.

Upon arrival, they found a blue electric car registered in Ubon Ratchathani province with burn marks on the left front section. The teacher owner, visibly shaken, explained she was dropping off a friend at school before heading home when smoke suddenly erupted from the air vent, prompting her to stop and call for help. Moments later, flames shot out from under the front hood. Witnesses brought a chemical fire extinguisher and water to help douse the flames before the fire truck arrived.

"This electric vehicle was purchased about three years ago and has approximately 70,000 kilometers on it. About a week before the fire, I had the battery serviced at an authorized center. Before the incident, the car was having difficulty starting, but I'm not sure what caused the fire to break out."

Preliminary investigation suggests an electrical short circuit inside the vehicle. Authorities plan to conduct a more detailed inspection to determine the definitive cause.

Thai Go Association Holds Annual Conference, Advancing Youth Players to the World Stage

The Thai Go Association launched a Young Go Fast Track program targeting youth aged 6-15 to develop elite players for international competition, as the sport continues growing with over one million Thai players.

6 May Khaosod

The Thai Go Association held its 2569 annual general meeting to report on the past year's activities and present policies for advancing Thai go in the coming period. The meeting was attended by founder Korsak Chairasmusit, president Vichai Chungvirojanpun, board members, and legal representative Chamorn Chamri from the Thai Sports Authority's Legal Department at the association's Seki Hall.

Founder Korsak Chairasmusit noted that the association began as a Go club on August 25, 1993, and was upgraded to association status in 2003. Over the years, it has continuously conducted go instruction, organized competitions, and promoted athletes to international competitions.

Go is recognized as a sport that develops critical thinking, analysis, planning, and discipline—essential skills for modern youth development. It also offers diverse career paths including teaching, professional playing, and establishing community go schools. Chairasmusit praised Thai go players' competitive abilities while emphasizing strict quality and standards. Thailand currently has over one million go players, reflecting the sport's steady growth.

President Vichai Chungvirojanpun outlined five strategic pillars: Population (increasing players), Network (expanding connections), Go Star (creating champions), Sponsor (securing funding), and Branding (building the go brand). The immediate focus is developing superstar players, as high-level competitors are limited. The association prioritizes youth players aged 6-15 through intensive training programs to increase skilled players at the amateur level, supported by go schools' crucial roles.

The key initiative is the Young Go Fast Track program, which recruits youth aged 6-15 with 1 Kyu or higher skill level for on-site training under professional go players' direct guidance to prepare for national and international competitions.

Nine-year-old Preem, a 1 Dan level participant, shared that she discovered go at a shopping mall, tried it, and fell in love with the game. After four years of play, she enjoys meeting friends and aims to reach 6 Dan. Nine-year-old Tara, also 1 Dan level, similarly tried the game and became passionate about it.

Tragic: Elderly Man Dies Alone, Remains Undiscovered for Days as Six Dogs Stand Guard and Consume Parts of Body

A 67-year-old Bangkok man died alone in his home and went undiscovered for several days, with his six pet dogs partially consuming the decomposed body before neighbors detected the smell and alerted police.

6 May Khaosod

A 67-year-old man identified as Mr. Nornong was found dead in his three-story commercial building in Bangkok's Bangbon district after several days, with the decomposed body partially consumed by his six pet dogs. Officers from Bangkhunthian Police Station, assisted by volunteers from the Por Tek Tung Foundation and forensic pathologists from Siriraj Hospital, discovered the body on May 6 after the locked iron door had to be forced open. The man was found in the rear area of the house, having been dead for several days. Six pet dogs kept in the home were barking loudly and standing guard over the body. Parts of the deceased's body showed signs of being bitten and gnawed by the dogs. The man suffered from chronic hypertension and cerebral artery constriction. Due to the decomposed state of the body and damage from the dogs, initial examination could not determine signs of injury or struggle, but authorities suspect he died from his underlying medical conditions and have sent the body for autopsy to confirm the cause of death. A 56-year-old neighbor, Mr. Sanen, revealed he noticed a strong foul smell the previous day but didn't initially investigate until the morning when he traced the odor to the house and alerted village authorities and police. He recalled seeing the homeowner feeding the dogs about four days earlier. The deceased was a secondhand goods seller at a local market and was known to love keeping dogs, maintaining six in total at his home. Officers from Bangbon district have initially removed five of the dogs, with one remaining still uncaptured, and authorities plan to continue providing food for the dog remaining in the house.

US Recalls 8 Million Thermos Bottles After Lids Explode Into Users' Faces

The US has recalled 8 million Thermos bottles after their lids violently exploded, injuring 27 people and causing permanent blindness in at least three cases. The design flaw affects bottles without pressure-release valves that build danger

6 May Khaosod

The United States has announced a recall of approximately 8 million Thermos brand insulated bottles following incidents where bottle lids have violently exploded into users' faces, resulting in 27 serious injuries including at least 3 cases of permanent blindness. The recall was triggered after bottle caps were found to burst forcefully from the containers when opened, causing severe facial trauma and eye injuries. The primary cause stems from a design flaw in the Stainless King Food Jar and Sportsman Beverage Bottle models, which feature lids without pressure-release valves. When users fill these bottles with perishable food or beverages and leave them for extended periods, enormous pressure builds up inside the container and explodes with high velocity the moment the user opens the bottle, potentially causing serious facial injuries, scarring, and eye damage. Consumer protection agencies are urging relevant Thai authorities to conduct urgent inspections of products in Thailand, including those from Thermos Thailand, and requesting clarification on whether affected products require recall in the country.

Sports Minister Explains Youth Olympics Withdrawal Due to Financial Constraints – Urges Sports Fund to Distribute Budget Equitably

Thailand withdrew its bid to host the 2030 Youth Olympic Games due to budget constraints and economic uncertainties, with the government unable to guarantee the estimated 5.4 billion baht needed for the event.

6 May Khaosod

Sports Minister Surasak Panjareunvarkul has explained the necessity of Thailand's withdrawal from bidding to host the 2030 Youth Olympic Games due to budgetary concerns and urged the National Sports Development Fund (NSDF) to distribute funds equitably among all sports associations.

The Thai government will not submit the certification letter to host the 2030 Youth Olympic Games due to excessively high costs.

Regarding this matter, Sports and Tourism Minister Surasak Panjareunvarkul stated that the government's decision to withdraw stems from considerable expenses coupled with Thailand's economic conditions and global uncertainties that make all cost projections unreliable. "As we all know, the government is drafting a borrowing decree, which means Thailand currently has no surplus funds," he explained. "Given the domestic economic situation and global uncertainties, everything costs more. The budgeted 5.4 billion baht for the Youth Olympics may not be sufficient, let alone additional expenses for athlete training facilities and infrastructure construction—we don't know how many more billions would be needed."

"Previously, the IOC (International Olympic Committee) supported host nations' expenses, but this time they won't," he continued. "As the sports minister, no one dislikes hosting major events because of the prestige it brings, but the money for such undertakings is public funds, not my personal money. We must calculate whether hosting will justify the investment. Since we're currently seeking to borrow funds—meaning we're broke—the government decided we need to be more cautious and better prepared."

Simultaneously, the sports minister instructed the NSDF to manage its funds carefully, ensuring equitable and widespread distribution to various sports associations. He also praised the direct cash transfer program to athletes as an excellent initiative. "Seeing athletes smile when funds are deposited into their accounts brings me joy as well," he said. "This is excellent news and great encouragement for the Thai national sports team. I want to ask the National Sports Development Fund to spread the budget fairly across all associations and ensure equity, so no sports association has to complain about delayed or unavailable funding withdrawals."

Phiphat Pushes Zone-Based BTS Fare System to Replace Distance-Based Pricing, Easing Commuter Burden

Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn visited the Bangkok Mass Transit System to announce major policy reforms, including the introduction of a zone-based fare system to replace distance-based pricing. The initiative aims to make public transportation more affordable and accessible while maintaining high safety standards and accelerating construction of new BTS lines. The government is also promoting a unified ticketing system and pushing for simplified fare structures to reduce daily commuting costs for all citizens.

6 May Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn and senior Transport Ministry officials visited the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) on May 6, 2025, to deliver important policy directives. The visit emphasized urgent infrastructure improvements to reduce transportation costs while prioritizing public safety in line with government policy. BTS executives, led by Chairman Montri Dechaskulsompor and Governor Kacharap Udomtharmpakdi, received the delegation and briefed officials on BTS operations.

Phiphat stated that the government under Prime Minister Anusorn Chaiyaweerakul has tasked the Transport Ministry with developing a modern, efficient transport system connecting all transport networks nationwide. The ministry wants BTS to provide contemporary, convenient, safe, standard-compliant, and environmentally friendly services, ensuring equitable public access to transportation.

Key policy directives include:

1. Improving living standards and reducing cost-of-living burden by maintaining the 40-baht all-day BTS flat fare while promoting a zone-based fare (Zone-based fare) system to replace distance-based pricing. This aims to create a fairer, more sustainable fare structure accessible to all. BTS should also accelerate negotiations with private concessionaires for unified single-ownership system management and support the 2025 Integrated Ticketing Management Act, coordinating with the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP) to ease commuter burdens.

2. Expediting construction and opening of projects, particularly the Purple Line (Taopoon-Ratburana/Rama IX Ring) and Orange Line (Bangkhunnon-Minburi/Suvinthawongse) extensions. Safety standards during construction and operations must strictly follow engineering and safety protocols, including machinery inspections, adequate lighting, warning signs, traffic management, and international-level monitoring systems to build public confidence.

Border Trader at Chong Jom Celebrates Thailand's MOU44 Cancellation, Says No Need to Open Checkpoint Without Cambodians, Calls for Joint Border Tourism Development

A Surin border trader welcomed Thailand's cancellation of a maritime agreement with Cambodia, arguing the checkpoint should remain closed and calling instead for joint tourism development linking local temples and attractions.

6 May Khaosod

On May 6, 2025, following the Cabinet's approval on May 5 to cancel MOU2544—a memorandum of understanding concerning overlapping areas where Thailand and Cambodia claim continental shelf rights—border trader Duang Rat, who operates a shop opposite the Chong Jom border market in Dan subdistrict, Kabchang district, Surin province, expressed her approval of the decision. She called on the Prime Minister to complete border wall construction quickly and comprehensively. She stated that cancelling MOU43 would be even better, while regarding MOU70, she emphasized that any agreement should not disadvantage Thailand, as border residents have suffered greatly in the past.

"If we open the checkpoint, where will national security be? What happens to the lives and property of border residents?" she asked rhetorically. "Border people can survive without opening a checkpoint. Before, we managed fine without Cambodia. We even provided assistance during the Khmer refugee crisis, supporting hundreds of thousands of people. Thais can help Thais. Thailand is abundant—if we want to boost the economy, we can do it ourselves. Many other countries offer trading opportunities; we don't need Cambodia. Instead, we should develop tourism attractions."

She highlighted potential tourism routes connecting Prasat Ta Kwaai, the 350-year-old temples, and other attractions, linking them to attractions like Khao Sala in Buachet district and Luang Poo Suang in Phu Sing district, Sisaket province. "We shouldn't just wait to open a checkpoint for Cambodia," she stressed. "We need to help ourselves and improve first before allowing them in. Thais can help Thais. Regarding the border wall, I urge the Prime Minister to accelerate its construction for national security and safety, and to meet the people's needs."
