Thai Cabinet to Discuss World Cup 2026 Broadcast Deal

Thailand's Cabinet will discuss broadcast rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, aiming to secure free access for Thai viewers ahead of the tournament in North America.

11 May Khaosod

BANGKOK — May 11, 2026. Thailand's Cabinet is set to hold urgent discussions on Tuesday about securing broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with hopes that Thai viewers will once again be able to watch the tournament at no cost.

A Government House source said the issue would be brought up during the Cabinet meeting on May 12 due to tight deadlines in negotiations with FIFA, world football's governing body.

The 2026 World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

According to the source, the government views this matter as urgent, aiming to ensure the public can access the global football tournament without subscription fees.

Officials said the policy aims to provide entertainment for the public while encouraging young people to develop interest in sports and healthy living.

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul previously stated the government was working toward the best possible broadcast arrangement, though the state cannot directly purchase the rights and will instead seek partnerships with the private sector.

Last week, Anutin also met with the chairman of Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) to discuss the matter, with further details expected after Tuesday's Cabinet meeting.

Woman Applies for WFH Job Only to Face Strict Rules: Camera On and Screenshots Every 10 Minutes

A job candidate rejected a work-from-home position after discovering the company required constant webcam monitoring and computer screenshots every 10 minutes, sparking online debate about invasive employee surveillance practices.

11 May Khaosod

Work or surveillance? A woman shares her shocking interview experience at a company offering work-from-home flexibility with a catch—constant webcam monitoring and computer screenshots every 10 minutes.

Guli, an Indian woman, became the center of online discussion after revealing how a seemingly promising job interview took a troubling turn when she rejected the position due to disagreement with the company's monitoring methods.

She explained that the position initially appeared suitable for remote work, and the interview proceeded smoothly until the company unveiled its employee monitoring system for remote workers, which made her deeply uncomfortable.

The company required employees to keep their webcams on at all times while working and take computer screenshots every 10 minutes to verify work efficiency. This was the breaking point that made her immediately decide the job wasn't right for her.

"I understand that checking work performance is important," she said, "but doing it this way feels more like torture. Every 10 minutes? I can't even sit still for that long."

After the video went viral, it sparked significant debate on social media. Many questioned whether such monitoring crossed the line on employee privacy. Critics suggested that if companies genuinely need to track work, they should provide company laptops that allow monitoring of work hours without requiring constant webcam access.

Many also argued that being under constant surveillance—camera on and monitored throughout the day—creates stress and anxiety for employees rather than boosting productivity.

UOB Thailand has joined forces with Minor Food Group to introduce a "Franchise Business Loan" program designed to support SMEs in investing in six prominent restaurant brands within the Minor Food portfolio, offering a maximum credit facility of 30 million baht without requiring collateral. The program aims to create more opportunities for new entrepreneurs and accelerate franchise network expansion across Thailand, supporting Minor Food's aggressive expansion plan to reach 4,000 locations by 2572 (2029).

On May 11, 2026, Sayumrat Maranet, Senior Vice President of SME Business at UOB Thailand, revealed that while Thailand's overall franchise market is valued at over 300 billion baht and growing 15-20% annually, many SME entrepreneurs still face significant barriers in accessing funding, particularly when starting new ventures or expanding existing operations.

UOB Thailand and The Minor Food Group Public Company Limited have launched the franchise loan program to support SME entrepreneurs looking to establish or expand businesses under five leading Minor Food brands with a maximum credit limit of 30 million baht and no collateral requirement.

The bank recently approved loans for two new franchise brands, including Korean fried chicken chain Bonchon and beverage shop GAGA, which are building their customer base in Thailand. The program also covers well-established brands familiar to Thai consumers, including Dairy Queen, Swensen's, and The Pizza Company, which continue to expand nationwide.

"Franchise business is a highly scalable model for systematic business expansion. Sustainable growth requires solid financial foundations," said Sayumrat. "Through our partnership with Minor Food, the bank has designed a lending approach that aligns with franchise business characteristics, supporting entrepreneurs at every growth stage, from those just starting out to those seeking to expand."

Thanyanches Ekawechvit, Chief Business Development Officer of Minor Food Thailand, stated that Minor Food currently operates over 2,700 restaurants, with 49% operating as franchises. The company plans to expand its network to over 4,000 locations by 2572 (2029).

"This reflects our confidence in franchise market growth potential," he added. "We offer comprehensive franchise support, from operational standards and training to pre-opening preparation. UOB's financial support will make it easier for interested entrepreneurs to start businesses and help existing franchisees expand efficiently to support long-term growth."

The franchise loan program supports entrepreneurs investing in all five restaurant brands without requiring collateral, within a maximum credit limit of 30 million baht, and offers special interest rates throughout the loan period. Funds can be used for opening new branches, renovating existing stores, transferring ownership (refranchising), refinancing, or compensating capital for shops operating no more than six months.

Interested entrepreneurs can contact Minor Food Group's franchise department at https://www.minorfood.com/th/partner#franchise for guidance and application information, or contact UOB Biz Call Centre at 0 2343 3555 (Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM) for franchise loan inquiries, or Line @ UOBSME.

Police arrested two drug traffickers transporting 300 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine worth 33 million baht from northeastern Thailand to Bangkok on Highway 2 in Nakhon Ratchasima.

11 May Khaosod

On May 11, 2026, at the Narcotics Suppression Bureau headquarters, Deputy Police Commissioner Samran Nueammar and a team of senior officers announced the arrest of Ratchanon (Nont), age 20, who served as the truck driver transporting the drugs, and Wipat (Toon), age 39, who acted as a scout driver. Officers seized 300 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, a green Isuzu truck used for transport, a black MG vehicle used for reconnaissance, two mobile phones, and other assets valued at approximately 33 million baht.

The arrests followed an investigation into a drug trafficking network operating in Bangkok that smuggled narcotics from Northeastern provinces for storage and distribution. The Bureau learned that on May 10, 2026, the network planned to transport drugs from the Northeast into Bangkok and surrounding areas for sale. When officers spotted the vehicles traveling along Mittraphap Road (Highway 2) in Sikhiew District, Nakhon Ratchasima, they conducted a search and discovered the methamphetamine in the Isuzu truck.

During interrogation, Ratchanon admitted to picking up the drugs in Nakhon Phanom Province for delivery to major dealers in Bangkok. Wipat confessed to serving as a scout driver under orders from someone named Khit and received 250,000 baht cash for this shipment. Both suspects have been charged with trafficking in Category 1 narcotics (crystal methamphetamine) without authorization for commercial purposes, with intent to distribute and threaten public safety and national security. They have been transferred to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for further investigation and to the Public Prosecutor's Office for prosecution.

Singer James and Teacher Ploykoy Open Up About Life as Parents of Two, Sharing Duties Caring for 'Mee Metta,' Revealing First Words and Naming Plans—a Joyful Family Moment

Singer James and teacher Ploykoy welcomed their healthy second daughter, Mee Metta, on May 11 at Vichaiyuth Hospital, with both mother and newborn in excellent condition despite Ploykoy's age of 42 and previous pregnancy complications.

11 May Khaosod

The family of young singer James Ruangsakdi Loychusak and his wife Teacher Ploykoy Natcha is overflowing with joy following the healthy arrival of their second daughter, 'Mee Metta.' On May 11, 2025, the couple opened up about their journey to parenthood at Vichaiyuth Hospital, accompanied by Dr. Kamlabhat Wichakphan, an obstetrician specializing in maternal and fetal medicine.

James expressed his gratitude: "I'd like to thank Vichaiyuth Hospital for taking excellent care of our family. Thank you to all the doctors, nurses, and staff who made us feel warm, safe, and happy."

Regarding their newborn's health, Ploykoy shared: "The baby is perfectly healthy with good weight, and my health is excellent too. At 42 years old, carrying a second child has been smooth and healthy."

James added: "The baby is very strong. She cried loudly right from opening her eyes, crying all the way through cleaning and weighing. The doctor said this is a good sign, indicating her lungs and other systems are working normally."

When asked about Ploykoy's first impression seeing the baby, she became emotional: "I told myself not to get dramatic or sentimental since this is our second child, but I couldn't help it. When they showed her to me, she looked almost 90% like what we saw on the ultrasound—the nose, eyes, eyebrows, and skin all matched."

Ploykov revealed they had her cervix stitched starting around three months into pregnancy to prevent premature delivery. She maintained careful self-care regarding diet, emotions, rest, and used a wheelchair during the later stages of pregnancy.

Dr. Wichakphan noted: "Ploykoy's case wasn't particularly difficult because she took excellent care of herself. My main concerns were her age—42 years old—which increases risks for gestational diabetes and chromosomal issues, but all tests passed, even the diabetes screening. Her cervix was short due to previous surgeries, so we monitored her regularly and provided medication. Everything went smoothly."

James expressed his emotions: "I was very excited. This time, I got to be in the operating room from the moment the doctor made the incision and witnessed the actual birth. Hearing the first cry was touching. When I saw the baby was complete, with good skin and weight and loud crying, it felt like a mountain lifted from my chest. Now I just need to figure out how to pay tuition!"

Regarding who the baby resembles, James noted several people say she looks like him, while Ploykoy noticed the baby has her eyebrows and is developing double eyelids like hers.

Sit-ups May Do More for Your Brain Than You Think—Stimulating Neural Activity and Potentially Reducing Alzheimer's Risk

Sit-ups and other abdominal exercises may boost brain health by triggering internal movements that improve fluid circulation and potentially reduce Alzheimer's disease risk, according to new research from Penn State University.

11 May Khaosod

Research from the United States reveals that performing sit-ups may have greater benefits for the brain than previously believed, stimulating neural circulation and showing potential in reducing Alzheimer's disease risk.

A new study from Pennsylvania State University offers an intriguing perspective: training sit-ups not only strengthens abdominal muscles but may also affect brain function through microscopic movements of the brain within the skull.

Patrick Drew, a neuroscientist and head of the research team, explains that body movement may be a crucial mechanism supporting brain health, with even small movements potentially affecting brain function.

New research suggests abdominal muscle exercises may benefit the brain similarly to what occurs during sleep.

In their experiments, the research team used advanced imaging technology to monitor the brains of laboratory mice while running on a treadmill, keeping their heads still to observe detailed changes within the brain.

Results showed that before each step, the mice's brains shifted slightly within the skull, occurring simultaneously with abdominal muscle contractions that initiated movement.

Researchers conducted additional experiments by applying gentle pressure to the abdomen of anesthetized mice, finding that even without walking, the brain still moved similarly, and quickly returned to its original position when pressure was released.

Researchers explain that these changes may result from internal body pressure acting like a hydraulic system, causing brain movement and potentially affecting fluid circulation around the brain.

This concept connects to an important process during deep sleep, when the brain has a waste-clearing system using fluid in the brain to remove accumulated residue from the day.

If this process malfunctions, proteins associated with neurodegeneration diseases like Alzheimer's may accumulate, leading to long-term memory problems and nervous system decline.

Although further research in humans is needed, preliminary results suggest that simple body movements such as walking or abdominal exercises may play a larger role than thought in both stimulating the brain and making the waste-removal system more efficient.

Regular exercise is important for brain health because it increases blood circulation, reduces inflammation, and may help the brain eliminate waste more efficiently.

Thailand plans visa-free stay cuts for foreigners

Thailand plans to reduce visa-free stays for foreign visitors, cutting the current 60-day allowance to match actual tourist behavior, with most visitors staying only nine days on average.

11 May Khaosod

BANGKOK — 11 May 2026, Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports is preparing to scrap extended visa-free stays for foreign visitors by reducing permitted lengths of stay in line with traveller behaviour. Data shows most tourists stay in Thailand for an average of only nine days; believed to have no significant impact on the Thai tourism market.

Speaking on 11 May 2026, Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said the proposal was being prepared for submission to the Cabinet.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will draft the full details of the plan, which would shorten permitted stays for travellers from 93 countries currently eligible for 60-day visa-free entry.

Surasak said the revised stay periods would be tailored to each country and aimed at matching actual tourist behaviour while helping authorities tackle criminals entering Thailand under the guise of tourism.

As studies found that foreign visitors to Thailand stayed for an average of just over nine days, he said. Visitors from Norway recorded the longest average stay at 21 days, meaning a 30-day visa period would still be sufficient for most travellers. He added that visitors entering Thailand for other purposes, such as internships or medical treatment, could apply for alternative visa categories suited to their needs.

Surasak said he was confident the reduction in permitted stays would not affect Thailand's overall foreign tourism market.

The minister clarified that the government would continue pushing ahead with plans to impose an entry fee on foreign tourists. The preliminary rate has been set at 300 baht per person per visit, mainly targeting arrivals by air, with the revenue earmarked for Thailand's tourism promotion fund. He expressed confidence that the plan would go ahead.
