On April 24, 2025, officers led by Pol. Col. Wichai Sansakul, the commander of Bangkok's Metropolitan Police Division 1 Investigation Unit, coordinated with detectives to arrest Thongchai ("Peep"), 42, and Viroon ("Big"), 45. Police had been monitoring the drug trafficking activities of major dealers operating in the Bang Bua Thong area of Nonthaburi Province. Officers tracked a black Toyota Avanza suspected of transporting and distributing methamphetamine. On April 23 at approximately 5:20 p.m., police intercepted the vehicle at a parking lot near Thai Vatsadu hardware store at 59/9 Moo 1, Kanchanaphisek Road, Bang Bua Thong, Nonthaburi.

When officers approached and identified themselves, the two suspects admitted to illegally transporting and storing methamphetamine for distribution. A search of the vehicle revealed approximately 90 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine concealed in the rear cargo area. During interrogation, both suspects confessed to picking up the drugs from Lad Lum Kaew District in Pathum Thani Province and storing them in the vehicle for delivery to customers throughout Nonthaburi Province. They stated they received payment of approximately 80,000 baht per transaction from individuals who acted as intermediaries.

Police charged both suspects with jointly distributing Category 1 narcotics (methamphetamine/crystal meth) with intent to sell in violation of drug laws, actions that constitute commercial trafficking, public health endangerment, and threats to national security and public safety. The suspects and all evidence were handed over to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation for further legal proceedings.

EU Approves €90 Billion Loan for Ukraine After Hungary Withdraws Veto and Backs Additional Russian Sanctions

The European Union formally approved a €90 billion loan to Ukraine and announced new sanctions against Russia on April 24, after Hungary withdrew its veto blocking the decision. The loan will cover approximately two-thirds of Ukraine's needs over two years, with half distributed immediately and the remainder in 2025, with most funds allocated for military expenses. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy attended an EU summit in Cyprus to discuss the aid package and further measures to pressure Russia.

24 Apr Khaosod

The European Union formally approved a €90 billion loan to Ukraine on April 24 and announced new sanctions against Russia, ahead of an informal summit of EU leaders in Cyprus that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended. The loan will cover approximately two-thirds of Ukraine's needs over the next two years, with half allocated this year and the remainder disbursed in 2025. Most of the loan is earmarked for military spending, while approximately 64.5 billion baht annually will go toward general expenses such as healthcare and education.

Economists warned that Ukraine could face a cash shortage by June without the EU loan, which would necessitate severe cuts to public services. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated: "As Russia escalates its aggression, we are stepping up support for brave Ukraine so it can defend itself and strain Russia's war economy."

EU member state ambassadors voted to approve the loan and sanctions on April 22 after Hungary withdrew its veto, making the approval official on April 23. President Zelenskyy posted on X: "This package will strengthen our army, make Ukraine more resilient, and enable us to fulfill our social obligations to Ukrainians, as set out in law." Zelenskyy added that Ukraine will consult with allies on intensifying pressure against Russia.

Bang Khun Non Police Hold Press Briefing on Detainee's Death in Custody, Denying Media Misinformation

A drug suspect died by hanging in a Bang Khun Non police detention cell on April 20, with authorities denying misinformation and confirming the death was suicide after reviewing live CCTV footage.

24 Apr Khaosod

On April 24, 2569 at 5:00 PM, Pol. Col. Udom Tangsema, Commander of Bang Khun Non Police Station, along with Pol. Lt. Col. Siwit Kaewplang, Deputy Commander (Investigation), and Mr. Anumsorn Rakkhwanjit, a CCTV technician from J.R. Office Automation, held a press briefing to address the family's questions regarding the death of a drug suspect who hanged himself in the detention cell.

According to Pol. Col. Udom, on April 19, 2569 at 11:28 PM, Bang Khok Noi Police arrested a drug suspect with 0.90 and 0.80 grams of methamphetamine in two bags. Since the Bang Khok Noi holding cell was under renovation, the suspect was transferred to Bang Khun Non Police Station at 11:50 PM.

On April 20 at 5:00 AM, officers reviewing CCTV footage discovered the suspect sitting unusually still against the cell door. Upon investigation, they found the suspect had used his own long-sleeved shirt to hang himself from the cell bars. Officers immediately called for emergency responders and performed CPR until paramedics arrived within less than five minutes. The suspect was rushed to Siriraj Hospital but was pronounced dead.

Police explained that they immediately checked the CCTV after the incident, fearing family misunderstanding. However, they discovered the CCTV adapter was broken, meaning only live footage could be reviewed, not recordings. This malfunction was discovered on the day of the incident. Police have clarified all facts with the family, who did not initially dispute the cause of death.

Regarding the family's concern about whether the suspect used a shirt or pants, police clarified it was definitely a long-sleeved shirt, which the family visually confirmed. Regarding the absence of bruising on the body and the tongue not protruding from the mouth, authorities explained these are medically consistent with hanging cases and that the soft fabric would not leave visible marks. Since the cell was constantly monitored and no one could enter, there was no possibility of police involvement in the death. Bang Khun Non Police Station had no prior involvement with the suspect and no history of problems with him.

Police Arrest Woman for Human Trafficking: Lured Friend with Casino Job Promises Before Selling Her into Prostitution

Thai police arrested a 31-year-old woman for human trafficking after she lured a friend through Facebook with false promises of casino employment in Singapore. The victim was actually trafficked to Bahrain for forced prostitution, prompting an investigation that revealed the suspect had victimized multiple women using the same deceptive tactics.

24 Apr Khaosod

On April 24, 2569, Police Colonel Withaya Sriprasertphap, commander of the Immigration Police Bureau, ordered the arrest of 31-year-old Ms. Ladapha (also known as Kanchana) under criminal court warrant 2235/2569 dated April 21. She faces multiple charges including human trafficking for sexual exploitation, using deception and threats, and transporting victims abroad.

The case began in October 2559 when the victim discovered the suspect's Facebook post—from a former friend—recruiting workers as casino chip exchangers in Singapore with promised monthly income of around 100,000 baht, free accommodation, and travel advances. The victim obtained a passport and convinced another female friend to join. However, upon travel dates, the suspect informed them the job location had changed to Bahrain.

Once in Bahrain, the victims discovered they were deceived into sex work. They learned the suspect had victimized multiple others, earning approximately 30,000 baht per person as commission. When the victims refused, they were threatened with debt repayment demands of over 100,000 baht for travel expenses.

The victims sought help from the Pavena Foundation, which assisted them in filing complaints with Bahrain police and Thai investigators. Evidence was compiled and a warrant issued. During interrogation, the suspect denied all charges. She has been transferred to investigators for legal proceedings.

Pierre Balmain Figure Honored in Royal Gongtek Ceremony for Queen Mother

The Grand Palace held a traditional Buddhist merit-making ceremony for Queen Sirikit, with elaborate paper offerings including a replica of her villa and a figure of fashion designer Pierre Balmain, who created many of her iconic garments.

24 Apr Khaosod

On April 23, the Grand Palace hosted a traditional gongtek ceremony—a Mahayana Buddhist merit-making ritual—honoring Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, with Their Majesties the King and Queen in attendance alongside royal family members. The ritual, conducted by Chinese Buddhist monks and rooted in traditions dating back to King Rama IV's reign, involves the burning of symbolic paper offerings such as houses, vehicles, and possessions, believed to provide comfort and prosperity in the afterlife.

Chinese monastic communities nationwide collaborated using traditional paper craftsmanship to create elaborate offerings reflecting the Queen Mother's life and legacy. Among the most impressive creations was a detailed replica of Chitralada Royal Villa complete with palace attendants, police guards, and court officials represented by 17 carefully dressed paper figures. A particularly striking detail was the inclusion of a paper figure of Pierre Balmain, the legendary French fashion designer who created many of the Queen Mother's iconic royal garments.

The offerings extended beyond the villa to include a royal vehicle with driver, symbolic gold and silver treasuries, mountain-shaped gifts, and ceremonial wealth chests. Additional paper garments replicated the renowned Thai silk outfits associated with the Queen Mother, celebrating her legacy as a cultural icon and patron of Thai textiles. The ceremony demonstrated both spiritual devotion and cultural continuity, highlighting over 150 years of Chinese Buddhist monastic presence in Thailand under the royal patronage.

Mother Unfazed by 106 Methamphetamine Pills, Demands Investigation into Police Foot-Kicking Motorcycle That Led to Son's Fatal Crash

A 25-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash while evading traffic police in Rayong, with his mother demanding an investigation into claims officers kicked his motorcycle, though 106 methamphetamine pills were found at the scene.

24 Apr Khaosod

A 25-year-old motorcyclist named Siwanat died after his motorcycle hit a parked car and flipped over while evading traffic police in Mab Tap Phud subdistrict, Rayong province. A witness claims he didn't crash on his own but was kicked off his bike by police. On April 24, the mother, Wichuda, met with investigating officer Sawat Non Singha at the police station to hear an explanation about the incident that occurred around noon on April 23. After their 20-minute private conversation, Wichuda told reporters she wasn't concerned about the 106 methamphetamine pills found in a wallet thrown along the road—if her son was guilty, she would accept it since he could no longer defend himself. However, she remained suspicious about allegations that police kicked the motorcycle, causing it to flip and her son's death.

Police traffic officers stated they saw Siwanat riding a motorcycle with loud exhaust and excessive speed, appearing reckless, so they followed him to conduct a search. CCTV footage from near Mab Tap Phud Temple showed him riding away, and officers observed his left hand pulling something from his pants and throwing it along the road. Later, officials found a wallet containing 106 methamphetamine pills. The police commander confirmed justice would be served fairly. An investigation is currently underway with the two officers involved to determine if their actions complied with standard procedure, with all evidence to be compiled for case filing.

UEFA Comes Down Hard: Benfica's Prestianini Banned for 6 Matches Over Sexist Behavior Toward Vinicicius

UEFA has banned Benfica's Gian Luca Prestianini for six matches following an investigation into sexist remarks directed at Real Madrid's Vinicius Júnior during a Champions League playoff match on February 17. The Argentine midfielder initially denied allegations of racial discrimination, and his Real Madrid counterpart claimed the offensive language was sexual rather than racial in nature. Despite these claims, UEFA's ethics officials determined the ban was warranted for sexist conduct during the match.

24 Apr Khaosod

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced disciplinary action against Gian Luca Prestianini, a forward for Portuguese club Benfica, imposing a six-match ban for sexist conduct directed at Real Madrid striker Vinicius Júnior of Spain. The incident occurred during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout playoff between Benfica and Real Madrid on February 17, when Vinicius reported to the referee that Prestianini had made racially discriminatory remarks. Prestianini denied the allegations at the time. UEFA subsequently appointed ethics and discipline officials to investigate the matter specifically, initially announcing a one-match provisional ban for the Argentine player, with potential additional sanctions pending upon completion of the investigation. Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni stated that Prestianini had told him his offensive language toward the Brazilian forward was of a sexual nature rather than racial in character. Ultimately, UEFA issued a final ban against Prestianini based on sexist behavior related to comments made during the match.
