Agriculture Ministry Tackles Drought in Kalasin, Promotes 'Khao Khao Vang' Rice to Boost Community Income

Thailand's Agriculture Ministry is addressing severe drought in Kalasin province by building new water storage facilities and promoting 'Khao Khao Vang,' a local rice variety, to boost farmer incomes and create food security. Deputy Agriculture Minister Watcharapol Khaokhwam visited the area to assess water conditions and meet with local farmers, pledging coordinated government support for urgent water resource development and agricultural improvements.

11 May Khaosod

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is actively tackling drought in Kalasin province by accelerating water storage development and promoting 'Khao Khao Vang,' a regional rice variety, to nearly double its yield and create additional value for both domestic and international markets, supporting grassroots economic stability and sustainable farmer income.

On May 11, 2026, Deputy Agriculture Minister Watcharapol Khaokhwam visited Na Thun subdistrict in Kham Muang district, Kalasin province, to meet with local farmers and assess water shortage problems. He inspected the water levels in the Huai Laeng royal-initiative reservoir at Ban Non Kho community hall and pledged coordinated government action to secure water resources. "We are here to listen directly to the needs of the community and farmers, and we will coordinate all relevant agencies to develop urgent assistance measures, particularly in securing adequate water sources for consumption and agriculture, so people can live and work with stability," Watcharapol said.

Na Thun subdistrict faces challenging conditions, situated in elevated terrain without large-scale water retention facilities to capture seasonal rainfall. Additionally, groundwater is saline and unsuitable for consumption. The Agriculture Ministry, through the Kalasin Irrigation Project, has surveyed a new reservoir that will store over 1.2 million cubic meters of water, providing adequate supply for five villages with approximately 4,000 residents.

Watcharapol then visited the Lam Pa Yang upper reservoir in Song Phraleuk subdistrict, Khao Vang district, to assess water conditions and meet with local farmers about agricultural challenges. The medium-sized reservoir holds an average of 4.6 million cubic meters and supports irrigation for over 5,600 rai through an 18.05-kilometer pipe network, enabling year-round cultivation.

The reservoir has boosted production of 'Khao Khao Vang,' a native rice variety of Khao Vang district, from 273 kilograms per rai to 501 kilograms per rai, demonstrating improved efficiency and water management. The Ministry is also promoting high-quality rice cultivation, market development, and value creation to make 'Khao Khao Vang' competitive in both Thai and international markets, increasing farmer income.

Additionally, Watcharapol distributed aquatic species seeds, rice seeds, and eggs to farmer representatives to enhance food security and reduce production costs.

Hantavirus Not Yet Detected in Thailand as Government Intensifies Surveillance and Screening Measures

Thailand has detected no hantavirus cases, but the government is intensifying surveillance at borders and screening travelers following infections linked to a cruise ship in the South Atlantic Ocean.

11 May Khaosod

Government Deputy Spokesperson Lalida Perischvivat revealed on May 11, 2025, that the government through the Ministry of Public Health is closely monitoring the hantavirus situation. Thailand currently has no reported cases of the virus, and the risk to the general public is assessed as low.

Surveillance measures have been intensified at international disease control checkpoints and through domestic monitoring systems following a World Health Organization report of infections linked to a cruise ship in the South Atlantic Ocean.

According to Perischvivat, hantavirus is a contagious disease primarily transmitted by rodents such as field mice and house mice. Infection typically occurs through inhalation of dust contaminated with rodent urine or feces in poorly ventilated areas. Human-to-human transmission is rare and limited to specific strains.

Early symptoms resemble the flu, and some patients may develop respiratory complications. Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine available; management is supportive care only.

The government has ordered the Department of Disease Control to increase surveillance of travelers from high-risk areas through coordination with airlines, ports, and relevant agencies. Public health facilities nationwide have been instructed to screen individuals with histories of rodent exposure.

The National Communicable Disease Committee also approved further study of classifying hantavirus as a dangerous communicable disease under the 2015 Communicable Disease Act, along with risk assessment preparation and surveillance system development.

The government is urging the public to reduce exposure risk by avoiding poorly ventilated areas where rodents may live. When cleaning high-risk areas, disinfectant should be sprayed first, avoiding sweeping or vacuuming. Homes and workplaces should be kept clean and rodent-free.

"The government prioritizes close monitoring of emerging diseases. Although Thailand currently faces low risk, we have prepared surveillance systems, screening protocols, and communication strategies to ensure public safety and confidence," the statement said.

The green electricity rate (UGT2) has been announced by the provincial and metropolitan electricity authorities as of April 30, 2026.
