Ink Reveals Thaksin Has Been Informed of Sentence Suspension Decision; Family Pleased but Confused About Why Elderly Must Wear EM Bracelet

Thaksin Shinawatra has been informed of his sentence suspension approval and will be released May 11, 2026, after serving nearly eight months at Klong Prem Prison, though his family expressed confusion about why he must wear an electronic m

30 Apr Khaosod

Following the Justice Ministry's sentence suspension committee's consideration of eligible detainees nationwide, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was included in the decision. After serving 7 months and 20 days at Klong Prem Central Prison, with only 12 days remaining before completing two-thirds of his one-year sentence, he is set to receive supervised sentence suspension on May 11, 2026.

On April 30, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Klong Prem Central Prison, former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, accompanied by her husband Pitthak Sukhosavadi and daughter Pinthongta Shinawatra, departed after visiting Thaksin.

Yingluck revealed that Thaksin has now been informed of the committee's sentence suspension decision and confirmed his respect for the process. She acknowledged some confusion about why he still must wear an electronic monitoring (EM) bracelet given his advanced age and former status as Prime Minister. However, the family is prepared to comply with all imposed conditions and is pleased to receive the sentence suspension.

When asked about concerns regarding elderly detainees wearing EM bracelets, Yingluck stated that typically elderly detainees don't need to wear them, but since the committee mandated it, the family has no issues and is not surprised.

Regarding the May 11 release date, Yingluck said the family will pick him up during normal government office hours. She denied that any countdown posts on social media were discussed with Thaksin.

When asked about plans after his release, Yingluck said there are no special plans—just wanting to go home. The family discussed his health, as Thaksin did not receive any medical checkups while imprisoned.

When journalists asked about welcome arrangements following his release, Yingluck and the family declined to answer before promptly departing.

Police Sergeant 'Jao Suea' Clarifies He Played Dice Game with Relatives at Home, Not Running Illegal Gambling Den

A Highway Police sergeant denies running an illegal gambling den, claiming he only played dice with family at home, but faces charges after a young man allegedly lost 120,000 baht in a game at his house in Phatthalung Province. Shop owners

Police Sergeant 'Jao Suea' Clarifies He Played Dice Game with Relatives at Home, Not Running Illegal Gambling Den. Meanwhile, shop owners report that the same officer regularly collects 'protection fees' of 1,000-2,000 baht per establishment.

The case stems from a complaint by Yupapon, 46, and Thanasak, 53, parents of a 20-year-old man with a brain condition. Their son was allegedly lured by Sergeant 'Jao Suea,' attached to Region 9 Highway Police, into playing hi-lo gambling at a house in Muang District, Phatthalung Province, losing over 120,000 baht in the early morning hours of April 28. They filed a complaint at Muang Phatthalung Police Station.

After the story broke, Yupapon stated that the sergeant called and asked to discuss the matter before they file a report, promising to return all 120,000 baht and asking them to tell media it was a misunderstanding. However, the mother refused and proceeded with filing the complaint.

On April 30, 2569, Muang Phatthalung Police investigators prepared to question the victims further and proceeded to file charges against the sergeant for gambling violations and fraud.

Yupapon expressed concern that because the accused is a police officer, the internal investigation might be biased.

Police Region 9 Commander Major General Marut Ruangjintana confirmed that the officer in question does work in the investigation unit of Region 9 Highway Police. An investigation committee has been established and is expected to reach conclusions within days. The commander stated that whether further disciplinary action will be taken depends on the investigation results and emphasized commitment to fairness for both complainants and the accused.

In his preliminary statement, the sergeant clarified that he only played hi-lo during a home gathering with extended family during the festival season and denies operating a gambling den as alleged.

Shop owners in Muang Phatthalung report that the sergeant regularly collects 1,000-2,000 baht in 'protection fees' from snack and general stores throughout the province, not just in Muang District. They noted this is not exclusive to this sergeant, as water police and railway police also collect similar fees.

Death Sentence Overturned for Am Cyanide in 'Nui' Case; Helpful Testimony Reduces Sentence to Life Imprisonment

Am cyanide, a serial poisoning suspect who killed at least three people with cyanide, has had her death sentence in a fourth murder case reduced to life imprisonment due to her cooperation with authorities. The court found her guilty of poisoning Police Lieutenant Colonel Sukanada Wimolmalai in 2022, with medical experts confirming cyanide was the cause of death. This latest sentence will run consecutively after her previous convictions for two other poisoning murders.

30 Apr Khaosod

On April 30, 2025, the Criminal Court on Ratchadamri Road held a sentencing hearing in case number Or.526/2568, with the Public Prosecutor's Office Section 9 prosecuting 39-year-old Sarunrat, also known as Am cyanide, on charges of premeditated murder. This is the fourth case involving the defendant. The charges stem from August 9, 2022, when the defendant allegedly poisoned the food and beverages of Police Lieutenant Colonel Sukanada Wimolmalai, known as Nui, a former deputy financial officer at Phu Pha Man Police Station in Khon Kaen Province, ultimately causing her death. The defendant denied the charges and contested the case by claiming alibi.

During the hearing, prison officials brought Am cyanide to court, where she wore dark sunglasses and maintained a composed demeanor to hear the court's verdict. The court analyzed testimony and evidence from both sides and found that on the day of the incident, the defendant and victim traveled together to a fortune teller's temple to consult about job positions, duties, and the victim's romantic matters. Prosecution witnesses testified that they saw the defendant frequently entering and exiting the temple and making phone calls, and later persuading the victim to leave the fortune-telling session.

Afterward, they dined together in Nakhon Pathom Province before parting ways. The victim subsequently suffered a car accident on a roadside in Kanchanaburi Province while heading home. Rescue workers reported finding the victim unconscious, and she later died. Prosecution witnesses testified that the victim died from heart failure, and toxicology reports confirmed the presence of cyanide in her body. Medical experts confirmed the victim died from respiratory system failure caused by cyanide poisoning.

Multiple prosecution witnesses provided consistent testimony, including one who confirmed the defendant purchased cyanide and was the last person with the victim while in possession of the poison. The court found the prosecution's evidence compelling and credible, with no apparent motive for false testimony. The defendant's defense arguments contained suspicious contradictions and failed to refute the prosecution's evidence. The court ruled the defendant guilty as charged and initially imposed a death sentence.

However, considering the defendant's helpful testimony as somewhat mitigating, the court reduced the sentence by one-third to life imprisonment and ordered this sentence to run consecutively after the defendant's previous two convictions of death sentence and life imprisonment from the same court.

Reports indicate this is the fourth conviction for Am cyanide on murder charges. Previous cases include: Case 1 resulted in a death sentence for poisoning Siriporn Khanvongse; Case 2 involved poisoning Nipha, a female police officer, initially sentenced to death but reduced to life imprisonment due to helpful testimony; Case 3 involved the poisoning death of young engineer Nittaya Kaewbuppha in Nakhon Pathom, which was dismissed due to insufficient evidence that the defendant possessed cyanide or had motive for property gain.

Natural Resources Minister Visits Laos to Advance 'Clear Sky Strategy' and Support Wildfire Training Institute

Thailand's natural resources minister visited Laos to advance a three-country "Clear Sky Strategy" aimed at reducing transboundary haze through wildfire prevention, air quality monitoring, and sustainable agricultural practices through 2030

30 Apr Khaosod

Thailand's Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchathi Chomklin, accompanied by Permanent Secretary Dr. Ravivarn Bhurideach, visited the Lao People's Democratic Republic on April 30 to hold bilateral talks with Lao Agriculture and Environment Minister Dr. Linkham Douangxay. The discussions focused on transboundary haze management and sustainable natural resource management cooperation.

The meeting strengthened ties and elevated cooperation under the 'Clear Sky Strategy,' a tripartite framework involving Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar. Both parties emphasized implementing a joint action plan to prevent and address transboundary haze problems from 2024 to 2030, targeting four concrete outcomes: developing Laos's air quality reporting platform and establishing a national air quality data center; establishing a WhatsApp hotline at the director-general level to report wildfire, smoke, and PM2.5 conditions with rapid coordination during burning season; developing a joint risk map and strengthening the tripartite network for wildfire prevention and control; and promoting GAP Zero Burning practices and implementing traceability systems for agricultural products, particularly animal feed corn, to ensure no connection to agricultural burning.

The meeting tasked the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants with supporting Laos in establishing a 'Wildfire Training Institute,' building on previous experience training 27 officials from Bokeo and Xayaburi provinces in 2023 at a training center in Chiang Mai. Following the discussions, the department's director-general visited an air quality monitoring station at a park along the Mekong River in Vientiane and presented 20 fire-protective suits to Laotian forest firefighting personnel to enhance their safety and preparedness.

Trairat Blasts Energy Commission Decision, Accuses Utility of Profiteering on Solar Power Spread

A prominent solar energy businessman has criticized Thailand's Energy Commission for a controversial solar power purchase agreement, alleging that utilities are profiteering by buying solar electricity from citizens at 2.20 baht per unit while reselling it at nearly 5 baht. Trairat Sirijantharaphot claims the pricing structure generates roughly 5 billion baht in annual profits for utilities despite actual transmission costs being only 0.51 baht per unit.

30 Apr Khaosod

On April 30, 2025, Trairat Sirijantharaphot, former deputy secretary-general of the Thai Build Thailand Party and current solar energy entrepreneur, posted on Facebook criticizing the Energy Commission's decision to purchase electricity from citizens' rooftop solar systems at 2.20 baht per unit. He questioned how this supports the public, noting that while the commission buys solar power at 2.20 baht per unit, it resells electricity to consumers at nearly 5 baht per unit. This spread of almost 2.8 baht per unit becomes profit for distribution utilities like the Provincial Electricity Authority and the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, despite actual transmission service costs being only 0.51 baht per unit. Trairat estimates the utilities are making nearly 5 billion baht in annual profits from this margin. He concluded by asking whether Energy Minister Eknath's solar support policy is truly designed to benefit citizens or simply to generate profits for the utilities at their expense. If the government were genuinely committed to supporting rooftop solar adoption, he argued, it should purchase electricity from citizens at the same price it sells to them, minus only the 0.51 baht transmission cost, rather than profiteering on citizens' backs.

Civil Society Pressures Parliament to Pass Clean Air Bill; Pimphattra Affirms Government Will Move Forward

Civil society groups submitted a letter to Parliament urging lawmakers to pass a stalled Clean Air Bill to address PM 2.5 pollution and wildfire smoke, with both government and opposition pledging support but facing a May 12 deadline for Ca

30 Apr Khaosod

At 9:40 a.m. on April 30, 2025 at Parliament, civil society networks focused on clean air submitted a letter to a special committee examining measures to address wildfire problems and PM 2.5 pollution. Pimphattra Vijai, a Pheu Thai Party MP serving as committee chair, received the letter on behalf of the committee.

Civil society representatives expressed deep concern about the situation, which they describe as a societal crisis and structural problem. They worried that the Clean Air Bill draft, pending in parliament, might not be prioritized despite vulnerable groups suffering. "The Clean Air Bill will address structural problems," they stated. "We don't want temporary fixes that cycle back. Multiple committees have been established only to loop endlessly. As representatives of the people, we urge you to support a genuine bill draft, not just a cover with empty content. We won't accept a greenwashed version."

Pimphattra responded that the Clean Air Bill has positive momentum, noting that the Prime Minister has stated clean air is a fundamental right for all citizens. She emphasized the bill has already progressed significantly and doesn't need to restart. She confirmed coordinating with Rawee Parisathananon, coalition coordinator and Ang Thong MP, to ensure the Cabinet returns the bill to parliament on time, urging people to ease their concerns and assure concrete results.

When asked how to address delays if the bill misses the May 12 deadline, Pimphattra denied any bureaucratic passing of the buck, stating the Prime Minister has prioritized this as urgent and she has confirmed with both the coalition coordinator and Cabinet that it will be completed.

Meanwhile, at 9:30 a.m., civil society networks also submitted a letter to opposition party representatives, with Prisan Watcharasinthu, a Democrat Party list MP, receiving it.

Prisan stated the opposition is ready to fully support advancing the stalled Clean Air Bill draft. The process requires two major steps: first, the Cabinet must approve advancing the draft before May 12 (60 days after the first parliamentary session). The opposition will closely monitor the Cabinet's May 5 decision. The opposition has invited Cabinet Secretariat representatives to a parallel meeting that morning. If the Cabinet approves a version they support, they will back it; if not, they will ask for explanations and request revision before May 12.

Prisan added that if the Cabinet approves, the bill moves to a joint parliamentary session requiring 350 votes. With coalition party support, passage is assured. He expressed hope the government will consider the health and lungs of all Thais, as failing to advance the bill would be harmful.

Häfele Targets 4.9 Billion Baht Revenue Growth, Navigating Slowing Real Estate Market with Innovation and Regional Expansion

Häfele Thailand, the German home and building products leader, is targeting 4.9 billion baht in revenue for 2026 through aggressive innovation and regional expansion despite a cooling Thai real estate market. The company is launching over 100 new products and expanding its portfolio to over 20,000 items while viewing the current market slowdown as structural change that creates opportunities in medium-sized projects and regional markets like Phuket, Chonburi, and Rayong. Rising raw material and logistics costs remain a challenge, but Häfele is investing in supply chain efficiency and maintaining competitive pricing to sustain growth.

30 Apr Khaosod

Häfele Thailand is driving growth in a real estate market entering a new normal phase by launching over 100 new innovations and expanding its product portfolio across six categories to over 20,000 items, showcasing its Häfele lighting solutions at the Architect '69 event.

John Clare, Managing Director of Häfele (Thailand) Limited, revealed that the German home and building products leader aims to grow revenue to 4.9 billion baht in 2026, up from 4.5 billion baht the previous year. Despite Thailand's real estate market slowdown, Clare noted that the market has fundamentally shifted over the past 2-3 years. Large-scale developer projects have declined due to reduced purchasing power, rising construction costs, and economic uncertainty affected by geopolitical tensions. However, Häfele views this slowdown as structural change rather than contraction, with the luxury segment continuing to grow and high-potential customer groups maintaining demand.

The company sees new opportunities in the growing number of medium and small-scale projects—currently around 400-500 new projects entering the market, primarily residential developments. Regional markets present another growth driver, particularly Phuket, which is booming in luxury real estate and wellness projects, alongside Chonburi and Rayong, which benefit from industrial and investment sectors.

Häfele's growth strategy rests on three pillars: increasing revenue from new products and innovations, expanding to high-potential markets, and increasing market share from existing and new customers. The company continues developing innovations across six main product categories, with particular focus on electrical appliances and home systems—which represent large market segments with high revenue impact—while maintaining strength in hardware and fittings to secure existing revenue.

The company plans to expand beyond major cities through showroom openings, service centers, and partnerships with regional partners to increase customer accessibility. Simultaneously, Häfele is investing heavily in supply chain efficiency to manage inventory and meet dispersed demand, particularly given global supply chain volatility.

Key challenges remain rising costs, with raw material expenses increasing 30-40% and logistics costs up 15-20%, prompting many market competitors to raise prices. Despite this, Häfele continues efforts to maintain pricing as long as possible to reduce customer burden and protect competitiveness.
