Pheu Thai Party in Turmoil! Chaiyachon Set to Talk with Nattachon After Leaving Party Line Group Over Committee Chair Disappointment

Bhumjaithai Party secretary-general Chaiyachon Chidchob said he will meet with Songkhla MP Nattachon Srikoakhuea, who left the party's line group after missing out on a committee chair position, to clarify the party's selection process.

29 Apr Khaosod

At 1:55 PM on April 29, 2569 at Santitham Building in Government House, Chaiyachon Chidchob, Minister of Digital Economy and Society and secretary-general of the Bhumjaithai Party (BTP), addressed the departure of Nattachon Srikoakhuea, a Songkhla MP, from the party's line group following his disappointment at not being appointed to a committee chair position. Chaiyachon explained that with such a large number of MPs, disappointment is inevitable, but there are many other important positions and opportunities within the party. He urged members to accept the situation and move forward.

When asked if party divisions could occur, Chaiyachon stated that it depends on individual personalities, but most MPs understand the party's growth and changes. He believes the party has managed the selection of candidates fairly. He said the party will attempt to clarify with anyone who feels misunderstood, noting this is their right as party members.

When asked if he had spoken with Nattachon directly, Chaiyachon replied he had just learned of the situation and hasn't met with him yet, but will likely do so soon. Regarding why Nattachon's qualifications weren't sufficient, Chaiyachon clarified it wasn't a matter of qualifications—many members qualify—but simply that positions are limited.

Concerning the 14 committee chair names that leaked, Chaiyachon said they were close to the party's consideration and will be finalized on Thursday, April 30. He expressed confusion about how the list was leaked, as no final decision has been made yet. When pressed on whether changes are possible, he confirmed there is a chance, though the leaked names aren't 100 percent accurate with the party's deliberations.

Climate Change Department Partners with GIZ to Upgrade National Community Waste Database

Thailand's Climate Change Department partnered with German agency GIZ to launch a workshop upgrading waste disposal data management systems to meet international emissions reporting standards and support the transition toward sustainable wa

29 Apr Khaosod

The Department of Climate Change and Environmental Management (DCCE), along with the Pollution Control Department (PCD), supported by the German development agency GIZ, launched a practical workshop on April 29 at Best Western Hotel Chatuchak. Deputy Director-General Pavit Kesavawong opened the session titled 'Upgrading Waste Disposal Site Data Management Toward Sustainable Waste Management Technology Transition.' The workshop, held from April 29 to May 1, 2025, assembled experts and over 33 central and local agencies to strengthen activity data collection from waste disposal facilities, driving sustainable waste management technology adoption and supporting transparency reporting under the Paris Agreement.

Pavit stated that following Thailand's submission of its first Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1) on December 26, 2024, the country entered the technical review process with UNFCCC experts. One key recommendation was upgrading activity data collection processes to comply with IPCC 2006 principles. Today's workshop is crucial for building shared understanding between central and local authorities to establish accurate databases for greenhouse gas emissions assessment, leading to decisions that transition waste management from open dumping to more efficient and sustainable systems.

Pavit added that the workshop receives support from the NDC Partnership group. Participants will hear from waste management experts to enhance knowledge about waste disposal technology according to PCD guidelines, including technology transition strategies, emissions calculations and reduction according to IPCC 2006 principles, practical training for site assessment, and a study visit to the Ornuch waste-to-energy project. This will support improved waste reporting and efficient technology transition going forward.

'Proper waste data management not only helps us achieve our greenhouse gas reduction targets under the NDC, but also directly improves community health and sanitation sustainably,' Pavit concluded.

Unanimous Decision: Monetary Policy Committee Holds Interest Rate at 1% as Inflation Expected to Exceed 3% Target, Economic Growth Forecast at 1.5%

Thailand's central bank held interest rates steady at 1% amid inflation expected to exceed its 3% target, with economic growth forecast at just 1.5% this year as Middle East conflicts weigh on business costs and consumer spending.

29 Apr Khaosod

The Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously 6-0 to maintain the policy interest rate at 1% per year, monitoring inflation expected to breach the 3% target. Economic growth is forecast at 1.5% this year.

Don Nakorntharp, secretary of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), announced that the committee meeting on April 29, 2026 reached a unanimous 6-0 decision to keep the policy interest rate at 1.00% annually.

Thailand's economy is expected to experience slower expansion due to Middle East conflicts, which directly impact business costs and household purchasing power. While inflation is projected to rise in 2026, it is expected to decline in 2027 as supply-side pressures gradually ease.

The committee estimates general inflation for 2026 will average 2.9%, up from negative 0.5% in the first quarter, driven primarily by global energy prices and cost pass-through effects. Inflation is expected to exceed the 3.0% target ceiling for a period before declining to an average of 1.5% in 2027 as supply factors resolve.

Core inflation for 2026 is projected at 1.6% and 2.5% in 2027, reflecting higher cost pass-through to goods and prices. However, price increases will not be widespread or sustained due to weak demand limiting businesses' ability to pass along costs. Medium-term inflation expectations remain anchored within the target framework.

"Pre-conflict economic data showed stronger expansion than previously estimated from both domestic demand and exports," Nakorntharp said. "However, the Middle East conflict has caused 2026 growth projections to slow to 1.5%, with 2027 expected at 2.0%."

Private consumption is under pressure from higher living costs, declining income trends, and reduced foreign tourist arrivals due to increased travel costs and restrictions. Despite these headwinds, merchandise exports continue to show solid growth driven by global demand for technology products.

The committee voted to maintain the policy rate, though it will closely monitor escalating inflation risks from energy prices and potential commodity shortages that may persist longer than expected due to Strait of Hormuz tensions, unexpectedly high business price pass-through, and potentially rising medium-term inflation expectations.

Economic conditions remain highly uncertain, requiring close monitoring of prolonged conflict risks and supply chain disruptions that could severely impact manufacturing and employment. However, should the government implement additional fiscal stimulus measures, the economy could expand faster than currently forecast, though growth would decline next year as stimulus effects fade and base effects diminish.

Opposition MP Weighs Durian in Parliament, Proves No Size Sells for 100 Baht; Slams Deputy PM Supratip for Wrong Timing

An opposition MP weighed durians in parliament to prove Deputy PM Supratip's 100-baht promotional campaign was impossible, citing poor timing that risks Thailand's durian reputation and harms Rayong farmers facing middlemen exploitation.

29 Apr Khaosod

At 10:40 AM on April 29, 2025, during a House of Representatives session presided over by Mallika Chirathphanvanit, the first deputy speaker, lawmakers considered a pending motion to establish a special committee to address falling agricultural prices. MP Kraikhon Silpajai from Rayong province of the People's Party discussed how Rayong produces various fruits recognized nationwide and internationally, but farmers face rising production costs—fertilizer, pesticides, and fuel prices all increasing annually. He focused on durians and mangosteen, arguing that the government should investigate middlemen, particularly Chinese traders, who completely control the market and set prices unilaterally, even buying from orchards before fruits mature and harvesting immature durians to catch early-season prices at the expense of quality.

Recently, an influencer created content claiming premium-grade durians selling for 600-700 baht would be offered at just 100 baht each, with Deputy PM and Commerce Minister Supratip joining the promotional campaign. "But once concerns arose from farmers about market price collapse, the Commerce Ministry quickly backtracked, claiming these were lower grades, not export quality. Ultimately, the influencer couldn't actually sell them at that price," Kraikhon stated.

Kraikhon brought a scale to parliament and weighed durians to demonstrate the impossibility. A jumbo-sized durian with mostly shell and little flesh selling at 40 baht per kilogram weighed 6.7 kg for about 270 baht. A medium-grade undersized durian at 80 baht per kilogram weighed 2.2 kg for roughly 180 baht. A pop-pak sized durian at 1.4 kg cost 112 baht. "Thus, no durian sells for exactly 100 baht, and yesterday's livestream showed no 100-baht durians—not even one million of them," he said.

"I thank all influencers for promoting durians, but the Commerce Minister's involvement is risky due to poor timing and coordination, potentially damaging Thai durian value and encouraging illegal imports from neighboring countries," Kraikhon warned. He noted that mangosteen prices fall as supply increases, and last year farmers had to abandon fallen mangosteens because labor costs exceeded fruit value. Despite the Interior Ministry's guidelines for government purchase prices matching announced rates during agricultural crises, no official prices are ever announced, leaving farmers perpetually disadvantaged.

Kraikhon proposed investigating agricultural product quality entering the market, especially immature durians, inspecting middlemen and Chinese traders for legal violations, and pursuing shell companies holding durian plantations for Chinese capital investors, while cracking down on illegal durian imports.

Nearly 100 Million Baht Worth of Ice Drug Smuggled Across Mekong River Hidden in Durian-Shaped Packaging; Traffickers Open Fire to Escape, Leaving 248 Kilograms Behind

Authorities in Nong Khai seized 248 kilograms of methamphetamine worth 99.2 million baht hidden in durian-shaped packaging after suspected Laotian smugglers fired weapons while fleeing across the Mekong River.

29 Apr Khaosod

On April 29, officials from Nong Khai Province held a press conference announcing the seizure of 248 kilograms of ice with an estimated value of 99.2 million baht. The operation was ordered by Nong Khai Provincial Police Commander Pol. Col. Atthachorn Changngam after intelligence suggested narcotics smuggling attempts from neighboring countries using Nong Khai as a transit point.

On April 24 at approximately 6 p.m., undercover officers received a tip that Laotian nationals would transport ice from Laos across the Mekong River near Wat Rat Chaoingkham in Muang District. Around 12:30 a.m., an unmarked Toyota sedan arrived behind the temple where multiple bags were discovered. When two men emerged from the vehicle to load the bags, officers identified themselves and the suspects fled into the forest while firing their weapons to cover their escape.

Authorities found 178 packages of ice, each weighing one kilogram, printed with durian and tea designs to deceive officials. As the driver fled down Baan Tha Dok Kham Road toward Khok Maeng Shadow, officers pursued and discovered two additional bags containing 70 more packages of ice along the route. In total, 248 packages weighing approximately 248 kilograms were seized.

Initial investigation indicates the drugs were destined for distribution within Thailand, particularly in tourist destinations, with an estimated street value of 400,000 baht per kilogram. The narcotics have been transferred to Wiang Kauk District Police for further legal proceedings.

Gold Traders Association Chief Warns of Severe Volatility, Short-term Investment Risky While Long-term Outlook Remains Bullish

Gold prices face near-term volatility from Middle East tensions and U.S. policy uncertainty, though long-term investors are advised to gradually buy during dips with potential gains toward $6,000 per ounce after October, according to Thaila

29 Apr Khaosod

On April 29, Jitti Tangsithiphakdi, president of the Gold Traders Association, revealed that gold prices continue to fluctuate due to Middle East tensions, especially Iran's situation, coupled with uncertainty surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump's policies. The organization urges investors to closely follow developments in May, particularly the appointment of the new Federal Reserve chairman, whose monetary policy could significantly impact gold prices.

Jitti stated that in the short term, gold prices may decline further but likely won't fall below $4,500 per ounce. For long-term investors, prices could potentially reach $6,000 per ounce after October. He recommended long-term investors gradually accumulate gold during price dips, while short-term traders, especially in online markets, should exercise caution and avoid over-leveraging.

The gold trading atmosphere remains quiet, with consumers hesitant to make purchases due to concerns about further price declines.

Thailand and Laos have agreed to strengthen cooperation on managing cross-border haze pollution and environmental issues through the "Clear Sky Strategy," with Environment Ministers from both countries signing on to a comprehensive action plan for 2024–2030. The partnership includes establishing a real-time coordination system, developing air quality monitoring platforms, and promoting zero-burning agricultural practices across the region to improve air quality and public health.

29 Apr Khaosod

Thailand and Laos have agreed to deepen cooperation on tackling cross-border haze pollution and sustainable environmental management under the "Clear Sky Strategy", officials said on Wednesday.

On April 29 at 9:30am, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin led a Thai delegation to Laos for talks with Lao Agriculture and Environment Minister Dr. Linkham Duangsavanh, focusing on joint efforts to address transboundary haze and environmental management. Both sides reaffirmed their commitments under a trilateral framework involving Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, aimed at tackling seasonal haze and forest fire pollution across the region.

The talks centered on implementing a joint action plan for cross-border haze management spanning 2024–2030, including development of Laos' air quality reporting platform and establishment of a national air quality data center. Both countries also agreed to strengthen real-time coordination through a "WhatsApp Hotline CLEAR Sky" system at the director-general level, designed to enable rapid response during burning season and monitor haze, forest fires and PM2.5 pollution.

Additional measures include creating shared fire-risk maps, strengthening a trilateral forest fire prevention and suppression network with Myanmar, and promoting zero-burning agricultural practices under GAP standards. A product traceability system, particularly for animal feed corn, was also discussed to ensure supply chains are not connected to crop burning.

Thailand proposed a new memorandum of understanding between the two environmental ministries to better address current challenges and reflect Laos' reorganized administrative structure. Officials noted the visit demonstrates progress in regional environmental cooperation, highlighting Thailand's commitment to addressing transboundary haze through scientific collaboration, technology transfer and coordinated management to improve public health and support sustainable development across the region.
