11h ago Khaosod

Thailand's Digital Economy Ministry has launched an intensified crackdown on fraudsters illegally posing as the Thailand Helps Thailand Plus (60/40) program to commit online crimes. As of May 25, 2025, authorities have identified 327,346 messages related to the program, with 39 confirmed cases including 20 pieces of misinformation, 3 distorted reports, and 16 legitimate posts. The ministry is urging the public to be cautious and follow the "four don'ts" principle: don't click links, don't believe unverified claims, don't rush, and don't transfer money. Deputy Minister Boonthida Samchai emphasized that the only official way to register for the program is through the "Pao Tang" mobile application, while previous "Khon La Khreung Plus" participants can verify eligibility through the "Tung Ngern" app. New merchants must register at Bangkok Bank branches. The ministry clarified that government agencies will never send SMS messages or links requesting program registration, so citizens should disregard any such communications.

Investigation Results Released: Crane Collapse on Rama II Road Claims 2 Lives, Blamed on Preventable Design Flaws

A crane collapse on Rama II Road in January killed two people, with investigators concluding the disaster resulted from improper fastening system installation and thermal expansion rather than material defects or natural causes.

11h ago Khaosod

On May 26, Deputy Secretary of Transport Jiraphong Theppituk, chairman of the fact-finding committee, announced the investigation results regarding the concrete beam and crane collapse on Highway 82 (Rama II Road), joined by Highway Department Director Piyapong Jiwattanakulpaisarn and State Railway of Thailand Acting Governor Anan Pothnim.

Jiraphong stated that on January 15, a massive crane used for bridge construction, along with prefabricated concrete components weighing several hundred tons combined, collapsed onto Rama II Road at kilometer 30+300 in Tha Chin Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Sakhon Province, while the public was using the route. Two people were killed and two injured.

The Ministry of Transport established a fact-finding committee immediately on the same day and appointed an engineering subcommittee comprising national-level experts led by Associate Professor Anak Siripanichkul, President of the Engineering Institute of Thailand. The committee held 8 main meetings and 4 additional engineering subcommittee sessions, conducting comprehensive investigations including:

– Site inspection of the accident location to examine damage firsthand – Collection of 21 documentary pieces from the Highway Department covering contracts, construction drawings, crane manuals, and safety reports – Testimony from 13 involved parties including the employer, designer, and contractor – Testing of concrete material quality in laboratory and field conditions – Structural analysis using computer modeling (Finite Element Method) – Systematic examination of all 7 hypothetical causes

After eliminating hypotheses through engineering evidence, the subcommittee concluded the root cause was not poor-quality materials, soil subsidence, or natural disaster. The collapse resulted from accumulated installation defects that eventually led to failure.

The bridge under construction had a slope, requiring the hundreds-ton crane to stand on this inclined surface. The contractor attempted to solve this by stacking 8 layers of steel plates over 80 centimeters high and adding a sand layer—comparable to stacking nearly 1 meter of bricks and placing heavy trucks on the sloped area. This resulted in incorrect crane fastening system installation, changing from the manual-specified Pin-Roller system (allowing thermal expansion) to a Pin-Pin system (completely locked on both sides).

Morning sunlight raised metal temperature approximately 8 degrees Celsius, causing thermal expansion. Due to both sides being locked, lateral pressure developed, pressing down on the stacked steel plates on the sloped surface. The steel plates began sliding off layer by layer rapidly, causing the crane's supporting legs to collapse and the entire crane to fall.

The committee found fault with both the contractor and the work supervisor. The contractor (Italian Thai Development Public Company Limited) improperly installed the crane fastening system, changing it from Pin-Roller to Pin-Pin without approval.

Shocking! Investigation Reveals Launching Gantry Crane Collapse onto Train at Sikhiu Left 31 Dead, Never Inspected During Operation

Shocking! Investigation Reveals Launching Gantry Crane Collapse onto Train at Sikhiu Left 31 Dead, Never Inspected During Operation, Failed to Replace Support Steel on Schedule, No On-Site Engineer

May 26, 2025 – Deputy Secretary-General of the Ministry of Transport Jiraphong Theppitag announced investigation results into the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway construction crane that collapsed onto Express Train No. 21 running between Bangkok and Ubon Ratchathani, in the area between Nong Nam Khun and Sikhiu stations in Nakhon Ratchasima province on January 14, resulting in 31 deaths and 71 injuries.

Jiraphong stated that after an intensive 45-day investigation, the engineering accident was caused by a Launching Gantry crane—a mobile steel bridge that lifts hundreds of tons of concrete segments to place them sequentially. The crane stands on three support legs with clear procedures requiring that before moving forward, the middle leg must first be brought close to the front leg to help bear the load together.

However, on the day of the incident, workers bypassed this procedure and immediately ordered the crane to move. This caused over 700 tons of weight to press down on the front leg alone. The support steel (PT Bar) could not withstand the force and broke, causing the crane foundation to collapse onto the train passing below.

The committee found this was not a single worker's error but a systemic failure involving all parties:

Party 1: Contractor (Italian-Thai Construction Company)

1.1 Bypassed established procedures in the manual by failing to move the middle leg close to the front leg before operating the crane—a mandatory step in the work procedure. Site engineers and work supervisors admitted they regularly omitted this step.

1.2 Work commenced without authorization. The site engineer instructed the team to start at 08:00 without waiting for work approval and without notifying the supervising engineer, claiming the supervisor was late.

1.3 Failed to request train service closure. There was no notification to Thai Railways to suspend train operations while working above the railway tracks, despite the contract clearly requiring this. The only evidence found was a request for Window Time between January 20-30, which was after the incident date.

1.4 Failed to replace support steel on schedule. The construction supervision consultant (CSC) had circulated notices since 2023 requiring PT Bar support steel replacement every 60 operational cycles, but the contractor claimed not to know despite previous incidents in 2023 on the Rama II Expressway Project generating similar warning notices.

1.5 Failed to conduct crane safety inspections according to legal schedules every three months. Inspection cycles were found to be delayed, and certification documents only covered 1 of 4 lifting equipment sets that should have been inspected.

Party 2: Construction Supervision Consultant (CSC)

2.1 No full-time on-site engineer or safety officer. CSC's safety staff visited the site only 1-2 times per week, and the supervising engineer was not constantly present.

2.2 Clear behavioral violations were found: work approvals were signed in advance for multiple days at a time, and backdated signatures were found up to three weeks late. CSC management was aware but took no corrective action, constituting serious dereliction of duty.

2.3 The crane was never inspected throughout its operational period. Neither CSC engineers nor safety staff ever directly inspected the crane's condition and operating procedures, not even once.

Party 3: State Railway of Thailand (SRT)

3.1 Overloaded assignments. The project engineer supervising Contract 3-4 where the incident occurred was assigned to oversee five contracts simultaneously, while other contracts with more intensive oversight had one-to-one engineer assignments. As a result, Contract 3-4 received inadequate supervision.

On May 26, 2569 (2026), authorities reported developments in a shocking case in Nong Kung Kaew subdistrict, Sri Bun Rueang district, Nong Bua Lamphu province, following the death of a 12-year-old girl who was fatally assaulted inside a two-story wooden and concrete house. The girl's mother was also severely wounded by a machete attack.

Investigators found the body of the girl (identified as "A") inside the house bearing multiple sharp-force wounds across her body, undressed. Her 33-year-old mother (identified as "B") suffered severe cuts to the head and torso from a machete and was transported to Udon Thani Hospital. Police identified the suspect as 38-year-old Pornchai, the stepfather. A 15-inch blade was seized as the weapon used in the attack, and the girl's body was sent for autopsy at Loei City Hospital.

Later that day, more than 50 officers from Nong Bua Lamphu provincial investigation police and Sri Bun Rueang police escorted Pornchai to conduct a crime scene reconstruction. The atmosphere was tense as relatives and friends of the victim, who had been monitoring the situation, attempted to approach the suspect's vehicle, some pushing against the car doors while shouting angry insults. The commotion echoed throughout the area.

Meanwhile, 27-year-old Bam, the victim's aunt, stood holding a photograph of her niece and confronted the suspect, declaring she would not forgive him in this lifetime or the next, before collapsing and requiring first aid assistance from relatives.

21-Year-Old French Player Arthur Gea Rushes to Bathroom During French Open Debut Match

French 21-year-old Arthur Gea made his Grand Slam debut at Roland Garros but struggled with stomach issues, taking an emergency bathroom break during his first-set loss to 13th-seeded Karen Khachanov.

11h ago Khaosod

French home-grown tennis player Arthur Gea faced a difficult situation at the French Open after he had to rush off court for an emergency bathroom break early in the first set of his debut match last Sunday. The incident occurred while Gea was trailing 13th-seeded Karen Khachanov 4-2, when he suddenly asked the umpire for permission and hurried off the Suzanne Lenglen court. "I need to go to the bathroom. I can't move anymore. I have to go," Gea told the umpire in French before rushing away. Typically, tennis rules only allow players bathroom breaks at the end of sets, making this unscheduled break a notable occurrence. Khachanov showed some mild frustration at having to wait about 3 minutes during play, which wasn't a normal changeover period. However, Gea later clarified that the umpire allowed him to leave for "medical reasons" and he received pain relief medication for stomach issues during the match. After the match, the 21-year-old revealed he began feeling unwell that morning and his condition worsened during play, compounded by Paris temperatures exceeding 31 degrees Celsius. Khachanov won convincingly in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(3), 6-0. Despite putting up a fight in the second set that went to a tiebreak, Gea couldn't withstand his opponent's composure and strength. The match lasted 2 hours and 38 minutes, marking the end of Gea's Grand Slam debut with a loss. Karen Khachanov, the 30-year-old Russian player, advanced in the tournament.

The suspect, identified as Duncan Wilcock, 51, a British national, confessed to police that he was the driver. He then led officers to the motorcycle used in the incident.

A drug test found no alcohol in his system, but detected cocaine. Wilcock was immediately charged and remanded in custody. Investigators presented him to Koh Samui Provincial Court on the morning of 26 May to seek a detention order. Police opposed bail, citing the severity of the charges, the risk of flight as a foreign national without a fixed address, and concern that he could flee the country if released.

As of 26 May, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thirasak remains in a critical but stable condition at Bangkok Hospital Samui. His medical team and family were making arrangements to transfer him by Royal Thai Police Aviation Division aircraft to Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok for further treatment.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thirasak has long been known for his volunteer work supporting the Ko Pha-ngan community.

Watch Out! Bhumjaithai Party Set to Vote on Sending MP Chonnapat to DSI for Online Gambling Investigation

The Bhumjaithai Party is voting on whether to send MP Chonnapat Naksan to the DSI for questioning in an online gambling investigation, with the MP signaling willingness to face justice.

11h ago Khaosod

At 3 p.m. on May 26, 2025, the Bhumjaithai Party parliamentary group convened to discuss and vote on the DSI's request to summon MP Chonnapat Naksan of the Kla Tham Party for questioning regarding an online gambling investigation. The House of Representatives has scheduled an urgent agenda item for May 28 to consider whether to authorize his interim detention. Party Secretary Chaiyachon Chidchop, who chaired the meeting, stated the party would first hold discussions, noting that some view this as a parliamentary privilege. However, he emphasized universal disapproval of the alleged conduct and pointed out that the MP himself posted that he is ready to face justice—which could change the situation entirely. Chidchop confirmed a resolution would be reached today, as the matter is straightforward. Should the MP voluntarily enter the justice process, the Bhumjaithai Party would vote accordingly without invoking parliamentary privilege. When asked about Pheu Thai's stance, Chidchop said no clear conclusion had been reached yet. He dismissed concerns that voting to send the MP constituted political manipulation, noting similar procedures have been standard practice across parties historically. Regarding accusations that not sending him would constitute protecting the Kla Tham Party, Chidchop argued such claims were baseless, as the justice system will ultimately determine guilt or innocence, with only about six weeks remaining before the process concludes regardless.
