A rental room in Phan Don subdistrict, Kumphawapi district, Udon Thani province has sparked widespread online criticism after Facebook user Boom Rapeeporn Moungsoontorn posted photos showing the space completely buried under massive piles of garbage with virtually no walking space. Reporters who visited the scene found a shocking condition throughout the hallway, bedroom, and bathroom, all overwhelmed by trash and emitting foul odors with belongings strewn everywhere.
The 48-year-old landlady, known as Cherry, explained that the tenant had lived there for 4 years and 2 months, paying 2,500 baht monthly rent. Though there were no initial problems, payment delays began roughly six months ago. On April 12, she ordered him to move out as arrears mounted beyond his deposit, though she granted extensions into May. The breaking point came when she discovered he was running the air conditioner continuously day and night despite owing rent, causing electricity costs to skyrocket. On May 15, she insisted he leave.
When the tenant vacated, she was horrified to find the room completely filled with garbage and broken items, requiring months of renovation and repairs. She's demanding he pay for the damage and expressed frustration at being left with such a burden.
Security footage from May 7 at around 10 p.m. showed tenant Alexander, 35, gradually moving some belongings out before a sedan picked him up without notifying the landlady, making her suspect he was fleeing.
When reporters brought both parties together, Alexander apologized repeatedly, promising he hadn't fled and would repay the debt. The landlady offered him a chance to turn his life around and not burden her this way again.
Alexander later acknowledged all the trash was his, claiming he had nowhere to dispose of it so he piled it in one room while using another to sleep. He denied fleeing, saying the landlady evicted him two days prior, leaving him homeless without even a single baht. Though he admitted to late payments, he insisted he never skipped rent entirely. He noted that posting his room photos on social media could constitute invasion of privacy and be actionable in court, but he chose not to pursue it. Instead, he agreed to pay 42,000 baht in damages through installments.
Alexander apologized through the reporters, admitting he was stressed from being given little time to gather his belongings and that removing as much trash as he managed was already an achievement. He currently works as a Facebook page admin related to lottery number tips. When asked about lucky numbers for May 16, Alexander suggested 8-9 and 346 as promising digits.
