Deputy Agriculture Minister Unveils Four Policies to Elevate Thai Fishing Industry, Rushes Aid for Fishermen on Energy Costs
Thailand's Deputy Agriculture Minister unveiled four strategic policies to revitalize the fishing industry, with immediate focus on reducing energy costs for fishermen and combating a blackfin snapper outbreak.
Deputy Agriculture Minister Wattarapol Khaokhram announced four strategic policies aimed at restoring the fishing industry as a vital economic pillar for Thailand following a policy rollout meeting at the Department of Fisheries on May 22.
The four core policy pillars are: (1) Ecosystem Management (Biodiversity & Balance) - addressing critical issues including the urgent spread of blackfin snapper by implementing daily situation reports, containment measures, and restoration of natural water sources under the "water with fish" concept; (2) Quality of Life and Legal Framework (Life and Local Empowerment & Legal Justification) - focusing on reducing energy cost burdens for artisanal and commercial fishermen while updating fishing laws to reflect current conditions; (3) Smart Aquaculture Technology Upgrade - promoting market-driven innovation to boost income and advance smart fisheries through early warning systems, AI, and IoT integration; and (4) Strict Traceability and Export Standards (E-Traceability & Export Standard) - positioning premium Thai seafood products in international markets.
Khaokhram ordered the Department of Fisheries to rapidly develop implementation plans with designated budgets and clear metrics within two weeks, emphasizing welfare support for fisheries officials nationwide. Two urgent priorities have been identified: immediate assistance for fishermen impacted by energy costs and management of "green fuel" issues, with results required within seven days and progress reports submitted directly. Long-term plans and policies must be detailed within ten days to address future challenges.
