Arne believes Liverpool will return to peak form next season if they sign a quality winger
Liverpool manager Arne Slot says signing a quality winger is crucial to returning to peak form after the club's worst season since 2015-16, with Jan Diomande from RB Leipzig the primary target.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes the Reds can return to their best form next season if they sign a quality winger. Liverpool ended a difficult campaign by advancing in the UEFA Champions League, but recorded their lowest points total and fewest goals since the 2015-16 season when Brendan Rodgers was sacked and replaced by Jurgen Klopp. The dramatic drop in goals and assists from the wings has been a major factor, with Liverpool unable to find a replacement for Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah's impact declining in what could be his final season at the club. Jan Diomande, an attacking winger from RB Leipzig, is the main target for the Reds following an excellent season, though the Bundesliga club wants to keep the 19-year-old for their upcoming Champions League campaign. Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain and Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United are also on the list of options being considered. Recently, Arne stated that they need at least one winger, and that would help Liverpool return to the form that won the championship in his first season. "Last season, one of the reasons we struggled was because we had dangerous players on both the right and left flanks. It's not just about the winger, but about the coordination between the winger and the fullbacks. Last season, I think if you had to explain our playing style, I would say it relied heavily on the coordination between the wingers and fullbacks. We tried to do the same again this season, but the results weren't as good as last season. That doesn't mean it was only their fault. We all, including me, didn't perform at the same level."
