Ten Steel Associations Petition Thai Industrial Standards Office to Phase Out IF Furnace Steel Mills Within Three Years

Ten Thai steel associations have petitioned the government to phase out induction furnace steel mills within three years, citing excess Chinese capacity and market dumping that undermines domestic producers who currently hold only 35% of Th

1d ago Khaosod

Nava Chantanasurachan, honorary chairman of the steel industry group at the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), along with executives from ten Thai steel industry associations, met with Industry Ministry officials including Deputy Permanent Secretary Wirut Wisetsinthu and TISI Secretary-General Ekkanit Romayanont to discuss the domestic and international steel industry situation and monitor progress on various steel product standards, licensing inspections, and product quality controls.

Nava revealed that the ten steel associations, representing over 500 Thai steel companies, presented their proposals to the ministry, which received them with genuine interest and committed to implementing concrete solutions and reforms. This reflects a true commitment to working for the public good and is part of regular ongoing meetings.

The industry praised the Industry Ministry and TISI for their courageous enforcement actions against non-compliant steel mills that fail to meet Thai Industrial Standards and cause pollution. "This demonstrates that the Industry Ministry is not just a licensing agency but one that dares to protect Thai people and Thai industry, where standards come first and laws must be respected and non-negotiable," Nava stated.

Nava further noted that in 2568 (2025), Thailand consumed 18.5 million tons of steel, with domestic producers capturing only 35 percent of the market at 8.1 million tons, while imports reached 12 million tons. The steel industry faces two major problems: (1) foreign steel dumping from China, which exported a record 119 million tons globally last year, with various global regions implementing anti-dumping, anti-circumvention, safeguarding, and countervailing duty measures that redirect excess Chinese steel to Thailand; and (2) induction furnace (IF) steel mills previously shut down by the Chinese government as part of China's efforts to advance steel industry technology, with these outdated furnaces creating excess capacity that floods the Thai market.

Bride's heartbreak: Lavish wedding dreams shattered as guests leave early before toasting ceremony

A Chinese bride's lavish wedding in Henan Province collapsed when most guests left before the toasting ceremony, with the couple blaming early meal service while the hotel cited the bride's costume change delay and guests' work obligations.

1d ago Khaosod

A Chinese couple faced a disappointing wedding day after investing over 40,000 yuan (around 200,000 baht) in their dream celebration at a Xinyang hotel in Henan Province on April 3, 2026. Despite booking a beautiful venue and hiring a professional photography team, the bride was devastated to find that most guests had already left by the time she changed into her formal dress to perform the traditional toasting ceremony, forcing her to cancel this important moment and leaving no commemorative photos. The bride blamed the hotel for serving meals ahead of schedule, claiming food service began at 11:52 a.m. when the ceremony wasn't scheduled to start until 11:58 a.m., and main courses were served by 12:35 p.m. while ceremonies were still ongoing.

The bride reported multiple issues throughout the planning and execution, including poor cooperation from hotel staff, incorrect lighting during rehearsals that affected the actual event, and overall coordination failures. She became severely stressed and argued with her husband during the reception.

The hotel disputed these claims, stating that the bride took 46 minutes to change costumes, causing the schedule to fall behind, and that they received no instruction to halt food service. The hotel also noted that being a regular workday, many guests needed to return to their jobs in the afternoon regardless of meal timing, and the establishment cannot be held responsible for guests leaving early.

Police and mediators were called to intervene, but both parties maintained their positions and could not reach an agreement. The mediator concluded that miscommunication and poor coordination shared responsibility between both parties and recommended proceeding through legal channels if no settlement could be reached.

Not a Flood! Parliament Speaker Sopon Leads Inspection, Clarifies Standing Water and Floating Debris as Routine Cleaning Following Heavy Rainfall

Parliament Speaker Sopon clarified that standing water and floating debris photographed in the Parliament building's basement was routine cleaning after heavy rainfall, not flooding damage.

1d ago Khaosod

On May 21, 2569, Sopon Sarirum, Speaker of Parliament and President of the House of Representatives, along with senior management from the Office of the House of Representatives, inspected the garbage storage room on B1 of the Parliament building. The inspection followed heavy rainfall the previous night that caused standing water and floating debris, which circulated on social media. Upon questioning the buildings and facilities chief, Sopon learned that the water visible in images did not result from internal building flooding, but rather from staff conducting routine cleaning operations to collect water and remove debris—exactly what media happened to capture, leading to misunderstanding. By morning, additional cleaning was completed and the area returned to normal use. "I conducted this inspection to verify the facts myself and understand what caused the situation and why those images circulated," Sopon explained. "The problem stemmed from heavy rainfall last night causing rainwater to flow into flat areas faster than our drainage system could handle. I have ordered staff to clear clogged debris and inspect the drainage pipes to ensure they can properly accommodate future rainfall."

Haier and Thailand's Physical Education Department launched the DPE x Haier CUP 2026, the country's first official under-16 youth football tournament, as part of the appliance brand's expansion into sports and youth development.

1d ago Khaosod

Haier (Thailand), the world's top-ranked smart home appliances and electrical brand for 17 consecutive years, is pushing forward with its Smart Home to Smart Life strategy through the power of sports. The company has announced a partnership with the Physical Education Department to launch 'DPE x Haier CUP 2026,' marking Thailand's first official youth football competition for players under 16 years old. This initiative aims to create an opportunity platform for Thai youth to demonstrate their potential and spark inspiration toward future sports careers, reinforcing Haier's vision of transitioning to an AI Lifestyle Brand that seamlessly integrates technology into every dimension of life—health, lifestyle, and positive community engagement.

Mr. Dong Zhian Ping, Chairman of Haier Electrical Appliances (Thailand) Co., Ltd., stated: "Today's consumers increasingly value 'smartness' across multiple dimensions—not just technology, but also lifestyle, mindset, and living practices that reflect health and long-term quality of life. Sports has become increasingly important to younger generations, extending beyond competition to encompassing health, community, and life inspiration. This philosophy aligns perfectly with Haier's direction of expanding from Smart Home to Smart Life, creating smart experiences across multiple consumer dimensions. This is evident in Haier's various sports initiatives, including the Haier Run mini-marathon, Haier Cup badminton tournaments, sponsorship of major tennis events like the Australian Open and French Open, and official partnerships with world-class football clubs Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain. These efforts not only provide Thai youth opportunities to develop their potential and compete at higher levels but also demonstrate Haier's commitment to building a sustainable sports ecosystem in Thailand."

Building on this success, Haier is expanding its sports ecosystem into football this year, a globally popular sport with significant appeal to younger audiences. Current global sports trends show football transitioning from a competition sport into a lifestyle platform connecting health, entertainment, and community. The 'DPE x Haier CUP 2026' youth and public football competition for players under 16 represents a significant step in providing Thai youth with opportunities to showcase their talents while promoting active lifestyles and growing Thailand's sports community.

Mongkol Wimalrat, Director-General of the Physical Education Department, stated: "The Physical Education Department prioritizes continuous youth sports development by creating sports opportunities accessible to young people nationwide, promoting sports as part of developing potential, quality of life, and essential skills for new generations—including discipline, responsibility, teamwork, and constructive use of leisure time. Football, being highly popular and significant in creating positive energy while connecting young people to society and sports communities, makes this partnership with Haier (Thailand) exemplary of public-private collaboration in building a tangible sports ecosystem. Together, we create a platform for Thai youth to develop skills and demonstrate their potential."

Anti-Corruption Commission Investigates 300 Million Baht Exercise Equipment Procurement by Lopburi Provincial Administration

The National Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating a 300 million baht outdoor exercise equipment procurement project by Lopburi Provincial Administration, questioning the cost-effectiveness of equipment priced at 200,000-300,000 baht

1d ago Khaosod

On May 21, 2025, Surapong Inthathevaras, Secretary of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), accompanied by Vivat Charoemcham, Deputy Secretary of the NACC Region 1, and government agency representatives from Lopburi Province, conducted a field inspection and provided guidance on preventive measures regarding government procurement. The case involves a project to install stainless steel outdoor exercise equipment in three locations under the Lopburi Provincial Administration: in the areas of Tha Sala Subdistrict Municipality, Phi Kao Ton Subdistrict Administration Organization, and Ngiw Rai Subdistrict Administration Organization. The NACC Secretary inquired into the project's origins, budget allocation, and value for money of the budget expenditure.

Suprapong revealed that while no complaints have been filed with the NACC regarding this stainless steel exercise equipment procurement, the NACC has implemented proactive anti-corruption measures and budget spending surveillance. All areas with relatively high budget expenditures will be monitored. When the NACC Lopburi office discovered this outdoor exercise equipment procurement project with a budget of over 300 million baht involving 11 separate purchases since fiscal year 2564, they raised questions about the cost-effectiveness, procurement processes, and potential legal violations.

The field inspection in Lopburi is part of proactive surveillance of high-budget expenditures, conducted in coordination with the Budget Bureau and the Comptroller General's Department nationwide. Both completed and future projects will be reviewed. In Lopburi's case, expenditures from fiscal year 2568 are being examined to assess value for money. Preliminary inquiries have been made with responsible officials, and various issues will be analyzed to propose appropriate measures.

The evaluation criteria for cost-effectiveness will involve both the Comptroller General's Department, which examines procurement standards, and the NACC, which reviews potential price collusion or overpricing. Cost-effectiveness will incorporate procurement laws and regulations on fraudulent pricing practices, which fall under NACC authority. Some matters may not violate laws but could still raise propriety questions.

When asked about equipment prices of 200,000-300,000 baht per unit but with only approximately 20 annual users, the NACC Secretary stated this requires further analysis, which his office has already considered. The NACC Prevention and Investigation teams will determine what measures to take, potentially triggering budget expenditure review procedures, though no complaints have been received to date.

Regarding 11 purchases with 9 from the same company, Surapong noted this represents a company repeatedly winning bids—another point requiring NACC consideration. If no laws are violated, the NACC may escalate recommendations to the Cabinet or relevant government agencies for regulatory compliance guidance. He emphasized that proactive measures encourage government approving authorities to exercise greater caution.

Secrets Behind an Abandoned House: Hidden for Years, Visitors Stunned by What They Find at the Summit

A TikTok user's discovery of hidden shrines atop a 279-step mountain behind an abandoned house near Wat Khao Phra has gone viral, revealing a local legend about medicinal herbs that once cured an illness.

1d ago Khaosod

On May 21, 2025, TikTok user @pennapanilsalab shared photos of discoveries behind an abandoned house that many people have never seen before, located on the route approaching Wat Khao Phra. In the video, they described driving past the roadside abandoned house and noticing a small mountain behind it with a pavilion containing a green Buddha image. Stairs were visible to the right of the statue, so they decided to climb up, counting the steps to see how many there were. At the summit, they found a large serpent statue with a sign indicating "279 steps." Looking to the left, they found another pavilion housing a beautiful Guanyin shrine, with a plaque reading "Bodhisattva Guanyin, the Compassionate Mother of Great Mercy to Humanity (Chinese tradition)" dated November 24, 1988.

After the post went viral, local residents shared the mountain's history. According to one account, an ancestor once dreamed that medicinal herbs on the mountain summit could cure an illness that medicine could not treat. Upon climbing and gathering the herbs, the person was healed. The locals named the mountain "Khao Noi" (Small Mountain) and constructed the staircase to provide access to the healing site. The mountain is located in Thab Khang Subdistrict, Khao Yoi District, Phetchaburi Province. Visitors can access it via the Wat Khao Phra entrance off Phetchakasem Road heading toward Bangkok, or through Wat Don Sai temple.

EXIM Bank Pushes Forward with 700 Billion Baht Lending Target, Says Thai Businesses Must Overcome Three Major Challenges

EXIM Bank targets 700 billion baht in new lending for 2025 as Thai exporters navigate high costs, regulatory burdens, and intense competition from Chinese competitors while seeking new markets beyond traditional partners.

1d ago Khaosod

EXIM Bank's Managing Director Chalach Rattanabunnidi announced that the bank has set a target to disburse 700 billion baht in new credit during 2025, with 1.8-1.9 billion baht already distributed in the first four months (January-April)—representing 100 percent growth compared to the same period last year. The bank also aims to attract more than 3,000 new credit and insurance customers to complement its existing customer base of 6,000. Currently, EXIM Bank maintains outstanding credit of approximately 1.8 trillion baht, up 2 percent year-over-year, with non-performing loans at around 4 percent of total outstanding credit.

Rattanabunnidi noted that Thai exporters—EXIM Bank's primary clients—still rely heavily on traditional markets such as China, the United States, and the European Union, but increasing regulations have encouraged exploration of new frontiers. However, progress has been hampered by instability in the Middle East. EXIM Bank projects Thai exports will expand by approximately 7 percent this year and GDP by 2 percent, driven by strong foreign demand for electronics linked to AI trends, food security concerns, continued investment momentum, and the government's 400 billion baht stimulus loan decree.

Looking ahead to quarters two through four, the bank is monitoring potential challenges including potential impacts from U.S. presidential visits to China for trade negotiations, de-dollarization efforts, and U.S. mid-term elections. Rattanabunnidi emphasized that Thai exporters face three major challenges: (1) High costs stemming from raw materials, logistics, labor, financial expenses, and increased risk management costs; (2) High compliance burdens from international standards, environmental regulations, data protection laws, and stricter accounting standards; and (3) Intense competition from low-cost Chinese products, rapidly changing technology, and shifting consumer behavior.

Thai businesses must quickly adapt to complex uncertainties including severe conflicts and prolonged wars affecting energy and food security, potential U.S. trade barriers reaching up to 15 percent, commodity and global financial market volatility, currency fluctuations, and extreme weather impacts. EXIM Bank pledges to support clients through the government's 5T policy framework: Target (providing SME relief), Transition (promoting green loans), Transform (diversifying markets), Transparency (ensuring global standard compliance), and Together (fostering collaboration).

PM Urges Governors and Police to Combat Influential Figures and Organized Crime; Jabs at Suchath for Being Useful but Speaking Out of Turn

Prime Minister Anupong Paojinda ordered governors and police to aggressively enforce laws against organized crime and influential criminals, while also taking a jab at Natural Resources Minister Suchath Chomklin for occasionally misspeaking

1d ago Khaosod

At 3:15 PM on May 21, 2025, at the Santitipratip Building in the Government House, Prime Minister Anupong Paojinda and the Interior Minister received a briefing on security operations in line with government policy. The PM concluded the meeting by addressing issues including nominee problems (which he equated with money laundering) and drug-related challenges, emphasizing that Thai civil servants can accomplish anything for the Thai people as long as it is lawful and procedurally correct.

Regarding efforts to scrutinize influential figures, the PM expressed a different perspective, arguing that not all influential people are inherently negative—some can positively persuade others and provide support. He distinguished between simply influential people and actual criminals and gangsters, urging officials to enforce the law rigorously rather than use hasty or careless methods.

When discussing northern region forest encroachment issues to be forwarded to Natural Resources Minister Suchath Chomklin, the PM remarked with humor: "We don't know him that poorly. I know him well enough. He's capable, somewhat of a roughneck, and occasionally misspeak—but he's already apologized to the relevant parties."

The PM stressed the importance of strictly enforcing laws against local mafia organizations and emphasized that in his administration, he personally oversees security agencies without delegating to any single minister. He highlighted the necessity of direct communication, mutual trust, and cooperation among security forces to prevent criminals from finding safe haven.

The PM also underscored the importance of information sharing, calling it "Information is Power," and urged the creation of a centralized database platform linking patient information. He concluded by expressing confidence that these efforts would meet public expectations and benefit the Thai people.
