Phase 2 Approved! Cabinet Allocates 2 Billion Baht to Train 16,000 Teachers for Rural Development with Immediate Civil Service Positions
Thailand's cabinet approved 2 billion baht to train 16,000 teachers for rural schools starting in 2570, with graduates guaranteed civil service jobs in their home regions under a five-year commitment to address critical teacher shortages.
The cabinet approved Phase 2 of the Teacher Production for Local Development program (2569-2582), targeting 16,033 high-quality teachers across nine cohorts. Student recruitment will begin in the 2570-2578 academic years, with civil service placements starting from 2574-2582 nationwide. The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation has been allocated 2,037.96 million baht for program operations and capacity building.
Deputy Government Spokesperson Pattaradarsami Thongsluaykorn explained that the program aims to produce teachers in shortage fields needed for basic education according to local demand. Graduates will have professional teaching skills, English proficiency, and technology expertise while improving student learning outcomes according to international PISA standards.
The program will supply quality teachers to schools under the Basic Education Commission, vocational education agencies, and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Upon graduation, teachers will be placed in their home regions or other areas as needed, with a mandatory 5-year non-transfer commitment to address teacher shortages in remote areas. This initiative is designed to create a new generation of highly competent teachers ready to transform classrooms and elevate Thai youth to international competency levels sustainably.
