Woman Speaks Out After Going Viral: No Longer Required to Pay for Bus Window After Mother's Head Strike
A woman's viral social media post forced a Thai bus company to reverse course and cover medical costs after her mother was injured when a sharp turn threw her against a window, cracking it. The company had initially demanded 4,300 baht in d
At 4:30 PM on May 18, 2025, Kanthika Suphaprasertsilp, known as Paeng, shared her experience with online news after posting about the incident where her mother was struck against the bus window. She explained that her mother was standing in preparation to get off when the bus made a sharp turn, causing her to lose her balance and hit the window hard enough to crack it. The bus conductor announced the damage but offered no first aid or medical inquiry.
The bus company's insurance provider, a third-party policy, declined responsibility, with management claiming it was "passenger negligence" and demanding 4,300 baht in damages. Her mother was shocked and frightened, so Kanthika negotiated at the depot, initially agreeing to compensate the driver 2,000 baht since the company wouldn't accept responsibility. At the private hospital, staff said no one from the bus company had coordinated care and demanded a deposit. When Kanthika expressed frustration, the hospital called police and insurance investigators. Medical examination revealed her mother suffered severe headaches scoring 8 out of 10 pain intensity and uncontrolled nausea, requiring hospitalization and CT brain scans.
After posting on social media, the situation transformed dramatically within one hour. Bus company officials, the garage manager, the driver, the conductor, supervisors, and representatives from the bus authority all visited the hospital to apologize. They confirmed her mother bore no responsibility for the window damage and promised compensation once she recovered. Kanthika believes without media attention, her mother would have been forced to pay. She views this as a safety incident where the bus company should bear responsibility for passenger protection, not blame passengers for accidents.
