Van Claims Brake Failure, Hits Two Female Employees Crossing Zebra Crossing; One Dead, One Injured
A van struck two Myanmar women crossing a zebra crossing in Samut Prakan on May 4, killing a 19-year-old factory worker and injuring another; the driver claimed brake failure after a sedan forced the pedestrians into his lane.
At 6:30 AM on May 4, 2026, Deputy Superintendent Thanawat Charoen-sook of Bang Phlei Police Station received a report of a van hitting pedestrians crossing the street in front of a factory on Theparak Road, kilometer 14, Moo 11, Bang Phlei Subdistrict, Bang Phlei District, Samut Prakan Province. He rushed to the scene with on-duty doctors from Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindorn Hospital and the Thai Red Cross.
At the accident scene in the rightmost lane near the zebra crossing, officers found a white Toyota van with Bangkok license plates with front-end damage and a shattered windshield. The driver, identified as Mr. Parinnya (surname withheld), 38, was at the scene.
Nearby, authorities found a critically injured female victim, 19 years old, a Myanmar national, lying unconscious. Staff performed CPR but to no avail, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The second injured person was a 22-year-old Myanmar national with a fractured right leg. Both victims were factory employees crossing the zebra crossing to get to work at a factory on the opposite side of the road. First aid was administered and she was transported to Chularat Hospital 3.
When questioned, Mr. Parinnya stated he was driving in the rightmost lane when a black sedan came from the middle lane. When the victims crossed into the middle lane, the sedan swerved to the left lane. The victims, startled, stepped backward into the rightmost lane where his van was traveling. He stated he could not brake in time and struck them with force.
After examining the scene, Deputy Superintendent Thanawat transferred the deceased to the morgue at Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindorn Hospital and brought the van driver in for questioning at Bang Phlei Police Station for legal proceedings.
