Tone Bangkaew Lodges Complaint with Police Commander Seeking Justice, Claims Coercion from Big Turtle to Cancel Debt Contract

1 May Khaosod

On May 1, 2025, at the Royal Thai Police headquarters, Tonthong Sukkean, known as "Tone Bangkaew," a 43-year-old prominent amulet dealer, submitted a complaint to Police Commander General Kittipat Phandhepech. He alleges unfair treatment and requested an investigation into Deputy Police Commander Major General Charoenkiat Pankaew's conduct after being contacted by a third party to meet with the deputy commander without a formal summons, though he decided to attend based on trust.

The incident occurred on April 17, when Tone arrived at a meeting room where the creditor, lawyer, secretary, and a person claiming to be a prosecutor discussed his debt. During negotiations, he claims he was pressured to cancel the original promissory note and sign a new contract with unfavorable terms. Documents and photos of his personal assets, including vehicles and watches, as well as photos of his wife, were presented during discussions.

A second meeting was scheduled for April 24, which Tone's lawyer attended in his place to address the same issues: demands for immediate debt payment and cancellation of the original agreement.

Tone maintains that the original promissory note stipulated a five-year payment period until 2573 (2030) with real estate as collateral, drawn up by the creditor's law firm but later deemed illegal. He questions whether government officials can exercise authority over civil debt collection matters and expresses doubt about whether the person claiming to be a prosecutor was genuine. Tone demands a factual investigation, asserting that he deserves equal legal protection as a citizen. He stated he currently feels unsafe and anxious, experiencing fear that affects his normal daily life, prompting him to seek justice from the police commander.

Yotchanan Leads Labour Day 2025 Push for Quality Jobs, Offers Hope to Thai Workers

Deputy PM Yotchanan led Labour Day 2025 celebrations in Bangkok, pledging government focus on job quality and worker welfare while accepting worker demands including improved pensions, skills development, and expanded social security protec

1 May Khaosod

On May 1, 2025, at Bangkok City Square outside Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Hall, Deputy Prime Minister Yotchanan Wongsawat, who also serves as Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, presided over Labour Day celebrations alongside Labour Minister Julphand Amornvivat and related officials.

Yotchanan emphasized that the government's primary goal extends beyond economic growth—it must ensure workers enjoy a better quality of life, as labour is a vital mechanism driving the nation forward. He stressed three key dimensions of International Labour Day: recognizing workers as essential pillars of the country; listening to and advocating for workers' rights and welfare; and fostering cooperation between employers and employees to solve problems collectively.

Yotchanan acknowledged that Thai workers face multiple challenges, including Middle East crises affecting energy prices and living costs, as well as technological transitions involving artificial intelligence and green economy shifts. The government must therefore pursue both reactive and proactive policies alongside workforce skill development, particularly for the combustion engine industry requiring adaptation to new technologies.

The government will also establish a national skills database to match worker capabilities with industry demands, providing support systems to increase employment and income opportunities.

Yotchanan stressed that labour issues extend beyond the Labour Ministry alone—they require comprehensive human resource management involving all ministries.

For his part, Julphand presented five urgent strategies:

1. Modern social security system reform—introducing the CARE formula to calculate retirement pensions aligned with actual wages throughout workers' lives, ensuring financial security in retirement. 2. Future skills development—accelerating AI adoption to enhance Thai workers' expertise to international standards through intellectual capital promotion. 3. Proactive rights protection—emphasizing reskilling and upskilling programs to encourage employers to develop staff rather than lay off workers, with concrete workplace safety measures. 4. Skilled labour market expansion—broadening opportunities for overseas employment in high-paying positions and systematizing cross-border labour management. 5. Platform worker advancement—creating flexible social security systems for freelancers and gig workers to ensure equitable access to welfare and protection.

Worker groups submitted eight key demands to the government, including ratification of ILO Conventions 87 and 98 for collective bargaining rights, establishing a risk insurance fund, increasing maternity benefits to 30,000 baht, and expanding protection for contract workers. Yotchanan accepted all proposals and ordered a follow-up task force within 30 days to demonstrate the government's commitment to creating quality employment.

Doctors Warn: Unusual Fatigue May Signal Colon Cancer—Here's How Symptoms Differ

Right-sided colon cancer often goes undetected because it bleeds internally without obvious symptoms like bloody stools, instead causing unexplained fatigue and anemia. Doctors urge colonoscopy screening starting at age 40, as early polyp r

1 May Khaosod

Doctors are sounding the alarm about colon cancer, particularly the right-sided variant, which presents with subtle and easily overlooked symptoms. A hepatogastroenterology specialist, Dr. Chien Cheng-hong, revealed that in April alone, he diagnosed three right-sided colon cancer patients—all sharing the absence of typical warning signs like bowel habit changes, bloody stools, or weight loss. One 50-year-old female patient had only one symptom: unusual fatigue.

Dr. He Chien-lin, a colorectal surgeon, describes right-sided colon cancer as a "silent vampire," gradually draining blood without detection. Unlike left-sided tumors that often produce visible symptoms, right-sided cancers bleed slowly and internally. Because the right colon is wider, blood lingers there longer, gets broken down by bacteria, and blends invisibly with stool. This silent bleeding resembles a slow leak, causing iron deficiency anemia with symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, and shortness of breath—often only discovered during blood tests.

Left-sided colon cancer presents more obvious signs: changes in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea), abnormally thin stools, incomplete bowel movements, frequent straining, and clearly visible blood in stool (bright red or dark). The narrower left colon makes tumors more obvious obstacles to passage.

Doctors warn that unexplained iron-deficiency anemia, chronic fatigue, or weight loss—even without bloody stools—should raise suspicion of right-sided colon issues. Prevention's best defense: colonoscopy screening. About 95% of colon cancers originate from polyps. Early detection and removal significantly reduce cancer risk. General screening should begin at age 40, with repeat screenings every 3-5 years. Those with a family history should start screening 10 years earlier than the relative's diagnosis age.

Digital Economy Promotion Office Launches Digital Agriculture Roadshow and Pitching Day in Upper Northern Thailand

1 May Khaosod

The Digital Economy Promotion Office (depa) is accelerating the One Tambon One Digital Season 3 (OTOD #3) project through the Accelerate Digital Agriculture and Digital Agriculture Pitching Day roadshow in the upper northern region. The initiative seeks to upgrade digital technology skills in agriculture for community groups, farmers, and entrepreneurs in northern Thailand while providing a platform to identify innovative community ideas for funding support from the project.

The event takes place April 29-30, 2025 at the Centara Riverside Hotel in Chiang Mai, with Vice Governor Siwakorn Buapong presiding over the opening ceremony. Government agencies, private sector representatives, farmers, and community groups are participating, alongside Boonthawee Duangirat, Director of Community Development Promotion and Support at depa, and Prachaya Komanan, Northern Branch Manager of the Digital Economy Promotion Office.

Boonthawee highlighted that the upper northern region is a major agricultural production area generating significant income for farmers, yet the sector faces multiple challenges including rising production costs, labor shortages, climate volatility, and technology gaps. Integrating digital technology into agricultural management is essential to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase agricultural productivity while enabling new-generation farmers and communities to develop sustainable modern agricultural business models.

The Accelerate Digital Agriculture program features intensive training and workshops on four key topics: digital technology for smart agriculture, income generation through digital content creation, financing readiness and business proposal development, and community green economy development. The event includes an AgriTech Showcase featuring digital agricultural technology from Thai entrepreneurs and a Business Matching area connecting community groups with certified technology service providers registered in the Thailand Digital Catalog.

Expert speakers from various sectors, including digital agriculture specialists such as Ajchara Chumphugkua (Ban Rong Tee Meed Community Rice Center Chairman), Second Lieutenant Nithorn Saenkampin (Young Smart Farmer Network Coordinator for Chiang Mai), Khawan Kamdee (Khaokham Community Enterprise representative), and Torlarp Samukrat (content creator), will share experiences and approaches to implementing digital technology in agriculture and community economics.

A major highlight is the Digital Agriculture Pitching Day regional pitching competition offering funding for technology development in communities. Community groups and entrepreneurs can pitch project concepts for depa support, divided into two categories: upgrading community groups in digital technology application (d-Community) with support up to 150,000 baht per project.

Thailand's environment minister has ordered a comprehensive investigation into Phetchaburi's proposed petrochemical and oil conversion projects following strong public opposition, with transparent hearings drawing over 700 residents concern

1 May Khaosod

May 1, 2025 — Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin has issued an urgent order for relevant agencies to investigate conditions in Phetchaburi Province and gather public opinion regarding opposition to the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for Siam Gulf Petrochemical's condensate and crude oil conversion plant project and its power and steam generation unit project. This action follows a complaint filed by Phetchaburi Provincial MP Thiwalrat Angkinanth.

The ministry has assigned Deputy Permanent Secretary Nipont Jamrongsirisak as oversight coordinator and instructed the Natural Resources and Environment Policy and Planning Office (ONEP) to expedite transparent and comprehensive public hearings, with ONEP Secretary-General Bannarak Serimthong personally attending the consultations.

The public hearing drew over 700 participants, including government agencies, local representatives, and community residents. Three main concerns emerged:

1. Lack of transparency in previous public hearings 2. Impacts from the existing oil refinery that received EIA approval in 2004 3. Environmental, health, and livelihood concerns, given the area's importance for tourism and agriculture

ONEP's secretary-general has ordered officials to conduct a thorough environmental impact inspection on May 8, 2025, covering the petrochemical project, mooring buoys, subsea oil pipelines, and storage facilities operated by Asia Link Terminal.

Minister Suchat emphasized that public participation is central to the ministry's approach and that all EIA procedures must be transparent, verifiable, and prioritize environmental and community well-being impacts. The goal is to balance economic development with sustainable natural resource conservation.
