Pheu Chat Party Launches Dr. Jo as Bangkok Governor Candidate; Wirot Vows to Support Despite Legal Troubles
The Pheu Chat Party introduced Chaiwat Satharawichit as its Bangkok gubernatorial candidate on May 5, as deputy leader Wirot vowed support despite facing legal troubles including party dissolution and ethics complaints.
The Pheu Chat Party formally introduced its Bangkok gubernatorial candidate on May 5, 2025, at Siam Square MBK in an event called 'Simple Bangkok by the People's Governor.' Senior party leaders, including Nattapong Rueangpanya (list MP), party leader Picharn Chaowapatanawong, and deputy leader Wirot Lakchanaadithorn, were joined by Bangkok Metropolitan Assembly candidates and enthusiastic supporters. The event opened with a video presentation introducing all 50 district assembly candidates and highlighting key issues raised by Bangkok MPs, including transportation and patient transfer rights to hospitals.
At 5:30 p.m., Wirot acknowledged that four years had passed since his last election campaign in May 2022. He explained that he had intended to continue serving Bangkok's people and had planned to assemble a team for the 2025 gubernatorial race. However, his plans were disrupted on January 31, 2027, when the Constitutional Court ruled against the Pheu Chat party's effort to amend Article 112 of the Criminal Code. Days later, on February 2, 2027, he and 43 others faced ethics complaints with the Anti-Corruption Commission. Subsequently, the Constitutional Court dissolved the Pheu Chat party on August 7, 2027, leading to ongoing legal proceedings.
Despite these challenges, Wirot remained resolute, stating that he never abandoned his commitment to making Bangkok an equitable city. He acknowledged that his dream had to be temporarily suspended until his integrity was vindicated and all charges were resolved. He then discussed with party leader Picharn the necessity for the party to move forward and select a gubernatorial candidate without waiting for him, ensuring the party's vision—shared by all members, supporters at home, and beyond—could continue uninterrupted. Wirot committed to remaining a steadfast supporter, providing backing as a 'wind beneath the wings,' serving as an engine and pillar for both the Pheu Chat gubernatorial candidate and all assembly candidates as they pursue Bangkok residents' dreams.
'I am pleased to introduce the Pheu Chat Party's Bangkok gubernatorial candidate: Chaiwat Satharawichit, our list MP and deputy party leader,' Wirot announced.
