Ministry of Public Health Warns Against Tooth Worm Myth, Clarifies That Cavities Are Caused by Bacteria, Not Parasites

Thailand's Ministry of Public Health debunks online myths about "tooth worms," confirming that cavities are caused by bacteria, not parasites, and emphasizing proper prevention through brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits.

5 May Khaosod

The Ministry of Public Health's Dental Institute warns the public not to believe false information being spread online about treating tooth cavities through various methods claiming to cure "tooth worms." The actual cause of cavities is bacterial infection, not parasites or insects. Cavities are caused by Streptococcus mutans bacteria, which is found in dental plaque and is the primary cause of tooth decay. When these bacteria break down starches and sugars from food, they produce acid that gradually destroys tooth enamel and dentin, creating cavities. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the tooth pulp, causing inflammation, severe pain, or abscess.

Proper cavity prevention methods include: brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste at least twice daily, regularly using dental floss to remove plaque between teeth, and visiting a dentist every six months for checkups and tartar removal. The Ministry urges the public not to share or forward unscientific claims and to rely only on information from trusted sources.

Akkhananth Orders Overhaul of ONEC Curriculum, Phasing Out 2008 Materials to Complete Nationwide Rollout of New Curriculum by 2027

Thailand's Deputy Education Minister Akkhananth Kankhitinant announced a major curriculum overhaul, ordering the Office of the National Education Commission (ONEC) to replace its outdated 2008 curriculum with a new 2024 version across all provinces by the 2027 academic year. The decision responds to opposition lawmakers' concerns about the aging curriculum serving over 800,000 students annually. Akkhananth welcomed parliamentary scrutiny on the education issue and stressed this is a permanent policy to keep Thailand's education system current with global developments.

5 May Khaosod

Deputy Education Minister Akkhananth Kankhitinant addressed progress on reviewing the Office of the National Education Commission (ONEC) on May 5, 2025, at Government House. He acknowledged concerns raised by opposition Pheu Thai Party lawmakers regarding outdated ONEC curricula and ordered ONEC Director-General Keattipat Suphavanich to explain why the old curriculum remained in use and to establish an expert committee to resolve the issue.

Akkhananth noted that ONEC currently operates two curricula: the 2008 version and the 2024 version, which has been piloted in 12 provinces. Field visits to Chaiyaphum Province revealed that the outdated 2008 curriculum was still in use, containing obsolete content. "We must stay current with global developments and changing circumstances," Akkhananth stated. "With over 800,000 students annually in ONEC programs, using substandard curricula creates long-term problems we must address now."

Regarding the timeline for curriculum development, Akkhananth explained that ONEC operates a continuous curriculum model. On May 9-10, students will transition from the old to the new 2024 curriculum. The complete nationwide transition to the new curriculum is expected by the first term of the 2027 academic year.

Akkhananth disclosed that an expert committee for textbook inspection and another for establishing quality standards have been established to ensure no future neglect. These committees will work long-term, as education requires continuous improvement. He emphasized this is not a temporary policy that changes with governments but a permanent educational standard.

When asked about cooperation between himself and the ONEC director-general, Akkhananth praised her diligent work and noted their similar policy approaches, citing collaborative efforts with the Department of Corrections regarding vulnerable groups. He stressed that effective collaboration requires constant communication and mutual respect, and that he avoids interfering in her administrative duties, allowing her to work freely.

Regarding Pheu Thai Party's plan to submit parliamentary questions or gazette inquiries, Akkhananth expressed gratitude for their oversight, noting that he considers education a critical national matter. When asked if he worried about the scrutiny affecting his ministerial position, Akkhananth laughed and responded that he will do his best today, believing that improved work over the next decade will benefit Thailand, regardless of temporary dissatisfaction.

Bangkok Heart Hospital Elevates Status to 'CVT Hospital of Asia Pacific'

Bangkok Heart Hospital has achieved Asia Pacific CVT Hospital status, specializing in comprehensive cardiovascular and thoracic care with advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques and catheter-based treatments for complex heart condit

5 May Khaosod

Bangkok Heart Hospital is advancing cardiovascular care to become a CVT Hospital of Asia Pacific under the 'BEYOND HEART CARE' concept, emphasizing its specialization in heart, vascular, and thoracic (Cardiovascular & Thoracic) care across all patient dimensions—from prevention and diagnosis through treatment and quality-of-life rehabilitation.

Dr. Kriengsak Hengrasmi, Director of Bangkok Heart Hospital, revealed that heart disease is no longer exclusively an elderly person's condition, with increasing incidence among working-age and younger people due to lifestyle factors such as stress, poor sleep, and unhealthy eating habits, as well as Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic (CKM) Syndrome linking heart, kidney, and metabolic functions. Comprehensive heart disease treatment requires care across the entire cardiovascular and thoracic system for optimal outcomes.

The hospital has cared for over 800,000 Thai and foreign patients over the past 20 years, with foreign patients comprising 45-50% from countries including Myanmar, Qatar, UAE, United States, and Bangladesh.

This elevation is driven through five core pillars of excellence:

1) Beyond Cardiac Surgical Precision elevates heart surgery to the minimally invasive era with rapid recovery. Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) techniques reduce pain, blood loss, and post-operative complications while enabling faster patient recovery and return to normal life. Offerings include: • Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (MICS CABG)—small-incision bypass without opening the sternum, reducing blood loss and pain with faster recovery • Totally 3D Endoscopic Valve Surgery—high-definition 3D endoscopic heart valve repair or replacement with enhanced precision and reduced tissue trauma • TAVI/MitraClip—catheter-based techniques for treating valve stenosis or regurgitation without sternotomy, ideal for elderly patients or high-risk surgical candidates • Robot-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (RATS) and Advanced Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS)—robotic and camera-assisted minimally invasive thoracic procedures for lung and chest diseases with reduced muscle and rib injury and faster recovery

2) Beyond Advanced Intervention offers new catheter-based treatment options for patients with severe or complex coronary stenosis using the Complex High-risk Indicated PCI (CHIP PCI) program, incorporating advanced technology for detecting and expanding severely narrowed arteries through cardiac catheterization without open surgery, suitable for high-risk patients or severe artery blockages. Techniques include: • Intravascular Imaging (IVUS/OCT) and Functional Assessment/Flow Study (FFR/iFR)—endoscopic visualization inside coronary arteries measuring blood pressure and flow rates

Pipat Cancels Southern Visit, Hands Landbridge Study to Ek Niti; Confident Project Won't Stall Like Thai Canal

Deputy PM Pipat canceled his southern site visit to the proposed landbridge project, handing leadership of a 90-day study to Finance Minister Ek Niti while expressing confidence the infrastructure initiative won't face delays like Thailand'

5 May Khaosod

At a government house briefing on May 5, 2569, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakij announced that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has tasked Deputy PM and Finance Minister Ek Niti Thammasat with leading a comprehensive study of the proposed landbridge project. Pipat said he is canceling his planned May 8 site visit to await the results of Ek Niti's 90-day research, reasoning that visiting now could be premature and potentially misguided.

Pipat emphasized that the landbridge study must comprehensively re-examine all aspects, including environmental impacts and benefits to Thailand. He clarified the project encompasses not just rail systems but also roadways and energy pipeline networks. When asked about public opposition, Pipat said the government must understand both positive and negative consequences, particularly for residents of Chumphon and Ranong provinces regarding their livelihoods and occupational alternatives for affected fishing communities.

Pipat acknowledged that public protests in front of government house cannot be prohibited, as this constitutes individual rights, but the government must ensure clear communication about the project's national benefits. He declined to make premature judgments on the project's success, repeatedly deferring to the ongoing study. Regarding criticisms from NGOs, Pipat noted uncertainty about whether opponents are local or external groups.

Drawing comparisons to the controversial Khlong Thai (Thai Canal) project, Pipat stressed that the landbridge differs fundamentally—it avoids canal excavation by using roads, rails, and pipelines instead. Where mountains are encountered, modern tunnel construction methods would minimize ecosystem damage. He reiterated that the landbridge has been a Bhumjaithai Party policy since 2019 and represents a flagship initiative under his current transport ministry role, now being pursued to drive economic recovery.

Dreams Shattered: Woman Loses 4.4 Million Baht After Booking House in Prestigious Project, Finds Only Empty Land

A woman and over 400 other buyers have lost millions of baht after a major real estate developer abandoned their housing projects with no construction progress. Despite winning a lawsuit, the woman faces mounting losses as the company's assets are fully mortgaged and unavailable for compensation, leaving victims with only court judgments and no financial recourse.

5 May Khaosod

A Facebook user posted in a consumer advocacy group seeking justice for her family and over 400 other victims who have been abandoned by a well-known real estate development company. She and her foreign husband decided to reserve a house in this project in late 2566 for 15.95 million baht, hoping to build a family home of their own. They paid over 4.4 million baht in booking fees, contract fees, and down payments, confident in the project's advertising and reputation.

When she visited the construction site in early 2568 to check progress, she found it completely abandoned with no workers and no advancement in construction. When questioning staff, she received evasive answers about waiting for loan approvals or suggestions to stop installment payments to shift blame to buyers. She later discovered there were victims from Phase 1 and other projects under the same company group, including condominiums in Bangkok and Pattaya, totaling over 400 people damaged similarly with combined losses exceeding one billion baht.

Despite winning her court case and hiring lawyers to send formal notices, her victory proved hollow. During enforcement proceedings, she discovered the company owner's land was completely mortgaged and couldn't be seized and sold to compensate victims. The company never initiated negotiations or offered any remedies, treating victims as if they didn't exist.

Currently, she finds herself in complete darkness. Her rental housing contract is about to expire, her 4.4 million baht savings have vanished, and the house she hoped to bring her three-year-old into doesn't exist. She now faces an urgent search for new housing despite having paid nearly 5 million baht, while suffering both physical and mental health damage. She pleads with social media to amplify her voice and prevent others from becoming victims of this company.
