PM Rushes to Establish Land Bridge Study Committee; Pipat and Suchart Set to Visit Southern Region on May 8
Thailand's Prime Minister Anuthon Charnweerakul announced the government is accelerating the establishment of a study committee for the controversial southern land bridge project. Deputy PM Pipat Ratchakij and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin are set to visit the southern region on May 8 to listen to stakeholder concerns amid significant public opposition to the project.
At 1:10 p.m. on April 4, 2569, Prime Minister Anuthon Charnweerakul, who also serves as Interior Minister, arrived at the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters to chair the party's weekly parliamentary caucus meeting. When reporters asked about the agenda for tomorrow's Cabinet meeting on May 5, Anuthon refused to comment, saying only that he would attend the party meeting first. Regarding anticipated protests against the southern land bridge project, the PM stated that the government is accelerating the formation of a study committee aligned with current conditions. He declined to address the matter of substantial public opposition before entering the meeting room. Meanwhile, Deputy PM Pipat Ratchakij and Transport Minister disclosed plans to visit the southern land bridge project sites on May 8 alongside Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin, confirming their readiness to hear all perspectives. When asked about residents potentially submitting opposition letters to Bhumjaithai's 14 southern provincial MPs, Pipat said they were prepared to listen to all parties but declined to elaborate further on the matter.
