Wat Koh Lak in Muang District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province is an ancient temple constructed around 1757 that originated as a monastic community during the Ayutthaya period. It was elevated to the status of a royal temple in 1972. The temple is widely respected for "Luang Por Piem Chantachoto," whose monastic name was "Phra Kru Sumedhivorakun," a distinguished abbot and provincial ecclesiastical leader of Prachuap Khiri Khan. He was renowned for his accurate fortune-telling abilities and expertise in astrological practices, and was also skilled in treating illnesses with herbal medicine.

Born into the Thawarnanan family at Ban Na Huai in Tambon Muang Kao, Amphoe Pranburi on Thursday, May 25, 1883, his family worked as farmers. At age five, his mother enrolled him to study Thai and Khmer script with the abbot of Wat Na Huai. At age nine, after a house fire, the family relocated to Ban Sra Chaeng in Nong Chok District, Phetchaburi Province. At age eleven, he studied magic water incantation with Mo Khiao, a renowned master, and learned multiple skills from famous teachers including architecture, drawing, and sculpting.

He was ordained at Wat Lad in Muang District, Phetchaburi Province in 1903 under Phra Kru Suvanmuni as preceptor and Phra Plad Bun as the ceremonial master, receiving the name Chantachoto. He spent five years at Wat Lad studying Buddhist teachings and performing monastic duties diligently. He assisted in constructing Wat Na Huai's ordination hall. In 1915, Phra Kru Suthajarakun transferred to Wat Koh Lak as abbot and provincial ecclesiastical leader, and Luang Por Piem was appointed acting abbot of Wat Na Huai, becoming full abbot in 1916.

While at Wat Na Huai, he studied astrology from Phra Suvanmuni at Wat Mahathat in Phetchaburi and began gaining his reputation in astrological sciences. He governed monks and novices with virtue and renovated temple buildings and facilities systematically. In 1919, he received the rank of Phra Kru Chao Thawan. In 1920, he became a preceptor. In 1930, he became abbot of Wat Koh Lak. In 1931, he was appointed as acting provincial ecclesiastical leader.

In 1924, he was elevated to Phra Kru Sannyabat Phra Kru Sumedhivorakun, serving as assistant provincial leader. In 1941, he was elevated to Phra Kru Medhivorakun and became provincial ecclesiastical leader. In the same year, he received the rank of Phra Rachakhanachao Third Class.

As abbot of Wat Koh Lak and provincial ecclesiastical leader, he demonstrated his full capabilities by utilizing his knowledge for various projects, most notably constructing the magnificent ordination hall, establishing a Buddhist studies school, and developing water facilities for the temple. Beyond his administrative duties conducted with moral principles, he undertook numerous renovation and monastic complex construction projects at various locations. He passed away peacefully on May 29, 1949 from intestinal illness.

Kitchen Paradise – Mr. Nong's Fish Rice Soup with Packed Ingredients, Fresh and Non-Fishy

Mr. Nong's Fish Rice Soup, a Bangkok branch of a legendary 50-year-old Rayong restaurant, offers authentic fish rice soup with fresh, firm meat and naturally sweet broth made from fish bones. Operating daily from noon to midnight on Rama 4 Road, the restaurant sources fresh seafood directly from fishing boats at affordable prices starting at 100 baht per bowl, along with specialty dishes like fish head hot pot and limited-edition stir-fried fish jaw.

5d ago Khaosod

When the weather turns gloomy and rainy, there's nothing quite like fish rice soup—an easy, comforting dish that soothes the stomach with a hot broth that slides down smoothly. But finding a truly delicious spot with fresh, tender fish at reasonable prices feels like winning the lottery.

Thanks to a recommendation for "Mr. Nong's Fish Rice Soup" near Samyan on Rama 4 Road, we discovered a restaurant that checks all the boxes. The fish is genuinely fresh, with firm, succulent meat that isn't mushy, tough, or fishy—simply delicious in every way.

This place has real pedigree, having operated for over 50 years, starting as a street cart near Mab Taphut in Rayong under the name "Pattaya Fish Rice Soup," serving an ancient Chinese recipe popular among Chachoengsao residents.

What makes it special is the broth—fragrant, smooth, naturally sweet from fish bones. The soy dipping sauce is equally excellent, available both spicy and mild, and when mixed with roasted chili, it becomes absolutely outstanding.

After 40 years of roadside operation, the shop moved into a shophouse before expanding to central Rayong and changing its name to "Mr. Nong's Fish Rice Soup." Most recently, it opened in Bangkok on Rama 4 Road between Soi Chula 9 and 11.

Owner Hia Nong-Bantur from Rayong explains that ingredients are fresh daily from the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea, including grouper, white snapper, mackerel, squid, shrimp, and oysters. The restaurant buys directly from fishing boats without middlemen, allowing competitive pricing.

Fish rice soup comes both soupy and dry, starting at 100 baht, served in generous, steaming bowls with abundant ingredients and large pieces. The menu also features hot pot, salads, stir-fries, deep-fried items, and tom yum, with "fish head hot pot" being particularly impressive—the meat is tender and succulent, and the collagen-rich fish skin is incredibly satisfying.

There's also a secret menu item: "stir-fried fish jaw with herbs" using grouper jaw enhanced with fish maw. Each jaw is carefully portioned, with three per serving, and since the shop receives only 15 groupers daily, they can make just five plates maximum—truly limited edition.

The restaurant opens daily from noon to midnight. Free parking available in the back (enter via Soi Chula 11); parking card gets one free hour at the restaurant. Call 09-2945-6669 for reservations.

Index Living Mall Launches MIYAZAKI Furniture Series, Inspired by Japan's Kyushu Resort Town with Quality Wood at Great Prices

Index Living Mall has launched the MIYAZAKI furniture series, a new collection of rubber wood furniture inspired by Japan's Miyazaki resort town, featuring 23 products across bedroom, living room, and dining room categories with modern tropical design and curved elements. The company aims to achieve 100 million baht in sales from the series, targeting younger consumers seeking homes that reflect simplicity and connection with nature. The launch capitalizes on positive market signals including government extension of home loan relaxation measures expected to boost real estate purchases and benefit the furniture sector.

5d ago Khaosod

Index Living Mall is aggressively pursuing growth opportunities amid market challenges, launching the new MIYAZAKI furniture series that draws inspiration from the woodcraft of Miyazaki, a resort town on the southern coast of Japan's Kyushu island. The line blends Japanese design aesthetics with Thai rubber wood in a Modern Tropical style, targeting younger consumers with a 100 million baht sales goal.

On May 14, 2025, Pichpimol Patmasatyanon, Chief Product and Trading Officer at Index Living Mall Public Company Limited (ILM), revealed that amid uncertainty across multiple dimensions, the company is strategically positioning products that emphasize quality alongside affordability. The company is monitoring positive signals from the government regarding the extension of home loan-to-value (LTV) relaxation measures through June 2026, which should bolster the real estate market and drive consumer purchases—benefiting the furniture sector as well.

"Given that today's consumers seek homes reflecting simplicity and connection with nature, we've built on the success of our wooden furniture from three years ago, such as the WASABI, TAKAYAMA, and AOMORI series, which generated over 400 million baht in revenue. Our latest offering, the MIYAZAKI series, takes inspiration from life in Miyazaki city, a resort town on southern Kyushu known for its pine wood industry, where locals traditionally craft furniture and home goods from pine wood. The wood is strong, durable, and adds warmth and simplicity to homes. Thailand's rubber wood shares similar qualities—beautiful natural surface and color, strong, weather-resistant, and offers long-term value."

The MIYAZAKI Series features 23 SKUs covering all lifestyle functions. The collection showcases rubber wood furniture with curved line designs and open structures, complemented by walnut-tone colors that create a resort or vacation home atmosphere. The line is organized across three main areas:

Bedroom (9 SKUs): Headboards feature design elements creating a warm atmosphere, emphasizing organization with wardrobes and soft-close drawers that operate quietly and extend product lifespan. Drawer handles feature a smooth J-shape design. Beds are available in three sizes (3.5/5/6 feet) to suit various spaces.

Living Room (12 SKUs): Features open-view furniture using modular systems with open shelving and coffee tables, allowing flexible space reconfiguration. A highlight is the rocking chair, designed to support the back for maximum comfort.

Dining Room (2 SKUs): Uses soft-edge design on table and chair edges for safety and visual comfort.

The collection connects with nature through home decorations such as Monstera, Indian rubber plants, emerald palm plants, and natural materials including wood, rattan, linen, cotton, ceramic crafts, woven pieces, and reed diffusers.

Concerned About Wasted Time: Cabinet Won't Reaffirm Old Constitution Amendment Draft, Points to Likely Third Reading Rejection; Bhumjaithai Party Set to Propose New Draft

Thailand's government has declined to reaffirm a previous constitution amendment draft and plans to submit a new one instead, citing concerns about repeated parliamentary conflicts and wasted time. Bhumjaithai Party will present the new draft to its party meeting on May 19 before submitting it to parliament, with the aim of avoiding the contentious issues that derailed the previous amendment attempt.

5d ago Khaosod

At 3:30 PM on May 14, 2569, government spokesman Paradorn Parisnanantakul held a press conference at Government House addressing the opposition's criticism following the cabinet's decision not to reaffirm the pending constitution amendment draft from the previous parliament. According to the government's perspective, the non-reaffirmation stems from previous constitutional amendment debates in parliament that contributed to the dissolution, triggered by disputes over reducing the Senate's power by one-third in approving amendments. "If the government reaffirms the old draft, it's likely that parliament will face the same conflicts as before dissolution, and the third reading vote will probably fail, wasting time since similar bills cannot be resubmitted in the same parliamentary session, potentially nullifying the intention of those who voted in the referendum," Paradorn stated. He explained that with a new parliament in place, it's appropriate for lawmakers and political parties to propose a new constitution amendment draft. Bhumjaithai Party will bring this matter to its party meeting on May 19, having already prepared a draft. If the party meeting approves, the party's 192 MPs will submit the draft alone, which meets the one-fifth requirement. The new draft's core content will exclude the problematic provisions from the previous version to achieve consensus and move forward. The draft also stipulates that constitutional drafting committee members will be selected through a parliamentary mechanism open to qualified applicants.

Back to School, Rising Costs: National Savings Fund Reports 27% of Parents Need Loans as Education Spending Hits Record 66 Billion Baht

Thailand's National Savings Fund reports back-to-school spending has surged to a record 66 billion baht, forcing over 27% of parents to borrow money or pledge assets to cover educational costs. The fund is launching a youth savings initiative, encouraging students aged 15 and older to save as little as 5-10 baht daily, with the government providing a 50% matching contribution to build financial resilience and reduce future debt risks.

5d ago Khaosod

The National Savings Fund (NSF) has released findings from the Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at Thammasat University on back-to-school spending for 2025, revealing total education expenditures exceeded 66 billion baht—a 6% increase and the highest figure in 17 years of surveying. More than 27% of parents reported insufficient funds, forcing them to borrow money or pledge assets to pay school fees, highlighting the severe financial burden impacting Thai family welfare.

The survey serves as a critical reminder that economic volatility directly affects children's education. In response, the NSF is inviting students and youth aged 15 and above to use the back-to-school period to start managing their personal finances by setting aside portions of their daily allowance as savings, developing financial discipline and building their own emergency fund. This approach helps reduce the risk of facing future financial crises similar to current circumstances.

Why youth should start saving with NSF:

• Easy savings without cutting pocket money: Begin with just 50 baht per transaction with no mandatory monthly requirement—perfect for students starting from daily leftover allowance.

• Government matching contributions: For every baht saved by youth aged 15-30, the government immediately contributes 50% (capped at 1,800 baht annually), providing valuable returns with complete safety.

• Building pride and reducing family burden: Personal savings from student years establish strong financial foundations and help lighten the family load as youth mature into adulthood.

Despite parents willingly reducing other expenses for their children's education, students can help their families by learning to save starting today—simply putting aside 5-10 baht daily from their snack money. With monthly savings of 150-300 baht through NSF and 50% government matching, students saving 300 baht monthly will receive 150 baht from the government. Over a full year of consistent monthly savings, they'll accumulate 3,600 baht with an additional 1,800 baht government contribution—totaling 5,400 baht.

The NSF aims to strengthen the next generation's financial resilience, breaking the debt cycle, with NSF as their partner in financial planning through retirement. The fund invites Thai citizens aged 15 and above not covered by other state welfare schemes to register and begin saving easily through the "NSF" mobile application or call the savings hotline at 02-049-9000 for more details.

Tagline: "You save, the government saves for you, and you get a pension." For more information, join the savings family via Line @nsf.th or follow updates through Facebook (National Savings Fund-NSF), the NSF app, website www.nsf.or.th, or call the hotline 02-049-9000 (Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-5:30 PM).
