Confirmed: New Coronavirus Strain Found in Thai Bats, No Human Cases Detected

A new coronavirus strain discovered in Thai bat populations poses no immediate human health threat, according to Thailand's Digital Economy Ministry, with the virus showing lower transmissibility than COVID-19.

11 May Khaosod

Thailand's Digital Economy Ministry confirmed on May 11, 2569 that a new coronavirus strain has been discovered in Thai bat populations, with no human infections reported so far. The virus is believed to have lower disease-causing potential and transmission rates compared to COVID-19. The discovery was made through Thailand's wildlife disease surveillance system under the One Health approach, which monitors disease transmission between humans, animals, and the environment.

Meanwhile, the ministry's Anti-Fake News Center (AFNC) examined 160,397 messages on May 9, identifying 8,714 requiring verification. Most leads came from social media monitoring (8,713 messages), with 24 topics undergoing full investigation. Of 11 completed investigations, 7 were particularly popular: 2 confirmed facts, 3 fake news, and 2 distorted information. The coronavirus discovery ranked as the most-shared verified story, while other debunked claims included obtaining driver's licenses through TikTok and false reports about special economic zones permitting casinos.

The bat coronavirus discovery is genuine, confirmed jointly by the Digital Economy Ministry and the Public Health Ministry's Disease Control Department. Current COVID-19 vaccines remain effective at reducing disease severity. The risk of outbreak is assessed as low, though the ministry urges citizens to verify information from official sources only and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports on social media.

PM Issues Directives to Village Headmen and Elders on Community Care and Drug Suppression

Prime Minister Anuthit Charnveerakul issued new policy directives to village headmen and local leaders, emphasizing transparency, fairness, and strict law enforcement in managing communities while suppressing drug trafficking and modern crime. The PM stressed that leaders must combat abuse of power rather than exercise it, and must coordinate efforts to distribute state benefits equitably and protect citizens from emerging threats like human trafficking and online fraud. The government plans to hold an integrated coordination meeting within two weeks to strengthen collaboration between local administrators and police forces.

11 May Khaosod

At 11:00 AM on May 11, 2026, Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Perisivivattana announced that Prime Minister Anuthit Charnveerakul and Interior Minister presided over a policy briefing for village headmen and elders at the Government House's Santhimaitri Building (Outer Section). The briefing included Interior Ministry deputies, administrators, and representatives from village headman associations.

The Prime Minister outlined that village headmen and local leaders serve as critical mechanisms of governance, operating as the frontline closest to citizens and serving as a lifeline during times of hardship. They bridge the gap between state institutions and communities, bearing responsibility for public welfare while acting as the public's eyes and ears. He emphasized they must perform their duties with transparency, fairness, and strict adherence to law, stating: "Be suppressors of abuse of power, not wielders of power, to serve as a reliable foundation for the people and support the work of district officers and the Department of Local Administration with concrete results."

The Prime Minister stressed coordinated efforts across all agencies, particularly on drug prevention and suppression using the "card never falls" principle, disaster management enhancement, and ensuring citizens receive genuine, transparent, and fair state protection. He also highlighted the need to stay vigilant against emerging crimes such as human trafficking and online fraud scams, enabling citizens to recognize threats and protect themselves and their families.

Economic development initiatives were emphasized through the "Thai Helping Thai Plus" program to alleviate hardship, aiming to distribute state benefits equitably to all target populations. The PM requested village headmen and local administrators to disseminate information and facilitate public access to state benefits and measures.

Additionally, the Prime Minister asked village headmen to monitor local situations and coordinate continuously with district officers and provincial governors to ensure coordinated, efficient problem-solving. An integrated coordination meeting among all parties is scheduled within two weeks to strengthen collaboration between local administration and police.

Following the policy briefing, the Prime Minister shared lunch with village headmen and organizers at the Santhimaitri Building's central hall, then posed for photos with them at the Thai Koo Fah building.

Victim of Fortune Teller Accused of Sexual Assault Files Additional Report After Being Deceived

An 18-year-old filed a sexual assault complaint against a renowned fortune teller in Lamphun Province, claiming abuse that began when he was 17. The victim's family delayed reporting due to the healer's prominent clientele and public reputa

11 May Khaosod

On May 11, 2026, at the Crime Suppression Division, Akkhaphorn Luangprasoet, founder of the "Silk Thread Must Survive" Facebook page, brought an 18-year-old male victim to file a criminal complaint against a renowned fortune teller and spiritual healer in Lamphun Province for sexual assault.

Akkhaphorn explained that this victim was sexually assaulted by the well-known northern Thailand healer starting at age 17 and is now 18 years old. The victim had initially visited the healer because his mother wanted a fortune reading and spiritual consultation. Due to the victim's attractive appearance, the healer separated him from his parents, sending them to eat elsewhere while privately entertaining the victim—apparently having already selected him as a target.

When the victim immediately told his family what happened, they researched the healer and discovered he has numerous celebrity, famous personality, government official, and prominent clients. The family feared that coming forward would not be believed due to the healer's strong public reputation at that time. However, with his credibility now eroded, they found the courage to proceed, determined to prevent additional victims.

The 18-year-old victim urged others who suffered similar abuse to come forward and help put the perpetrator in prison. He emphasized that no one deserves this experience and expressed his emotional devastation, questioning why he had to endure such trauma. After the first victim came forward, he pushed ahead with the case, feeling that getting this dangerous person imprisoned would be meaningful. He vowed to fight this battle to the end.

Commerce Ministry Inspects School Uniform Shops, Emphasizes Price Controls and Clear Labeling, Encourages Parents to Use Promotions with Up to 86% Discounts

Thailand's Commerce Ministry is inspecting school uniform shops to ensure stable pricing and clear labeling ahead of the new school term, with participating retailers offering discounts up to 86% through May 31.

11 May Khaosod

The Department of Internal Trade under the Ministry of Commerce is actively managing prices for school uniforms and educational supplies during the school term opening, despite increased transportation costs and reduced consumer spending due to economic conditions. Most business operators have maintained prices similar to the previous year.

On May 11, 2569, Deputy Director-General Jirawut Suvannaaj revealed details following field inspections of major school uniform retailers in Bangkok's Thonburi district. The department launched the "Thai Help Thai Plus: Big School Opening, Easy on the Wallet - Back to School 2026" program, with multiple business sectors cooperating to reduce prices for school uniforms and related educational supplies.

The department visited major retailers including Thonburi Education Company, S. Chang Education shop, and Taraso department store. These establishments are helping reduce parent expenses through the program while maintaining original pricing, comparable to the previous year. Despite increased transportation costs, items from existing inventory remain at the same price. Additionally, stores offer promotional discounts on educational supplies and services such as free embroidery or school initials.

According to data collected in early May across Bangkok's department stores, distributors, and regular shops, most school uniform prices remain stable compared to the previous year. Examples include Samjai Nueuk boys' shirts at 215-360 baht per item, Thomson boys' trousers at 325-375 baht, and Samjai Nueuk girls' shirts at 165-360 baht. Some items showed slight increases, such as Nom Chit boys' shirts rising from 139-300 baht to 179-290 baht, while others decreased, like Taraso boys' trousers dropping from 260-375 baht to 238-350 baht.

Deputy Director-General Jirawut noted that consumer purchasing power has declined this year due to economic conditions and rising living costs, causing many families to be more cautious about spending. Some reuse old uniforms or buy only essentials. The department is therefore prioritizing both price controls and promotions to alleviate back-to-school expenses.

The "Thai Help Thai Plus: Big School Opening, Easy on the Wallet - Back to School 2026" program runs from April 30 to May 31, 2569, with 49 participating merchants covering over 1,000 education-related products and services with discounts up to 86%. This is expected to reduce household expenses by at least 300 million baht.

For parents in other provinces, the Department of Internal Trade is collaborating with provincial commerce offices to organize similar "Thai Help Thai Plus: Back to School 2026" activities in areas coordinated with the Ministry of Education, including Chachoengsao, Phetchabun, and Mae Hong Son provinces, making affordable school supplies more accessible.

Department of Mineral Resources Issues Landslide and Flashflood Alert for Three Northern Provinces

Thailand's Department of Mineral Resources has issued landslide and flash flood alerts for Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, and Chiang Mai provinces due to heavy rainfall expected through May 11. Local authorities and volunteers are mobilizing eme

11 May Khaosod

May 11, 2025 – The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center under the Department of Mineral Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, has issued an alert for landslides and flash floods in high-risk areas experiencing continuous heavy rainfall, particularly in the northern region, specifically Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, and Chiang Mai provinces.

According to the Meteorological Department, between May 10-11, 2025, the upper part of Thailand will experience thunderstorms with strong gusty winds and heavy rainfall in some areas, especially in the northern region. This is caused by a high-pressure zone and cold air mass covering the Northeast and the South China Sea, combined with southerly and southeasterly winds carrying moisture from the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea into northern Thailand.

The southern region will also see increased rainfall with heavy downpours in some areas due to strengthening easterly winds covering the Gulf of Thailand, the South region, and the Andaman Sea. Wave heights in the Gulf of Thailand are expected to reach approximately 1 meter, with thunderstorm areas experiencing waves exceeding 2 meters.

Volunteers and network coordinators in at-risk areas are urged to continuously monitor and track landslide and flash flood conditions while preparing emergency response measures. Relevant agencies must closely follow the situation and conduct immediate field inspections if disasters occur, providing timely reassurance and preliminary guidance to residents in vulnerable areas.

Opposition submits to House Speaker to send 200-billion-baht loan freeze to Constitutional Court, citing violation of Constitution

Opposition lawmakers petitioned the Constitutional Court to freeze 200 billion baht from a 400-billion-baht emergency decree, arguing the energy restructuring funds violate the Constitution and lack genuine urgency compared to true economic

11 May Khaosod

On May 11, 2025, at Parliament, opposition leaders including Nattapong Rueangpanyawuthi (Pheu Thai) and Korn Chatikavanich (Democrat Party) submitted a petition to House Speaker Sophon Saramuli requesting the Constitutional Court review a 400-billion-baht emergency decree, arguing that 200 billion baht for energy restructuring was illegally included and violates Article 172 of the Constitution regarding urgent necessity.

Nattapong stated that the opposition is using constitutional rights under Article 173 to challenge the decree, claiming the energy restructuring component is not economically critical and lacks genuine urgency, but was bundled with emergency relief funds. The opposition contends that energy restructuring could be handled through annual budget appropriations or specific relief measures under existing revenue laws, not through an emergency decree.

Korn added that while the Constitution allows borrowing during economic crises, the opposition must verify whether this truly meets legal urgency criteria, comparing it to past emergencies like the Asian financial crisis, hamburger crisis, and COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that the decree has already been published in the Royal Gazette and is in effect, but the opposition's petition asks the court to rule on whether funds already spent would need to be returned if the decree is deemed unconstitutional.

The opposition emphasized their petition was carefully drafted to request a temporary suspension order freezing only the 200-billion-baht portion deemed non-urgent, with case-by-case judicial review. Nattapong warned that previous Constitutional Court rulings have sometimes overstepped executive authority, and the opposition plans to propose establishing an ad hoc committee to further investigate.

National Anti-Corruption Commission and Interior Ministry Investigate Chinese National's Thai ID Citizenship, Trace Lineage Back to Grandfather's Generation

Thailand's anti-corruption and interior ministry officials investigated how a Chinese national named Cheng Zhao Wu obtained a Thai identity card, finding no legal violations in preliminary findings. The case drew public scrutiny after online media published the ID image and questioned possible connections to a weapons case in Chachoengsao province, prompting authorities to review documents dating back to 2008 when the Thai citizenship was verified.

11 May Khaosod

The National Anti-Corruption Commission and Interior Ministry have investigated a Chinese national's Thai citizenship documentation, with preliminary findings showing no legal violations. Online media sparked controversy by publishing an identity card belonging to Cheng Zhao Wu, registered in Bangkok's Bang Khae District, raising questions about his connection to a Chachoengsao weapons case and how a Chinese citizen obtained Thai identification. Initial investigations revealed that Cheng Zhao Wu received his Thai identity card through proper procedures via nationality verification, with his family obtaining Thai citizenship dating back to his grandfather's generation. Cheng himself acquired Thai nationality in 2008 and operates a phone equipment wholesale and retail business, denying any knowledge of another individual mentioned in connection with the case. On May 11, 2025, at 11:40 a.m., anti-corruption officials led by Secretary-General Pumiwisai Kasemsukon and Deputy Secretary-General Siripong Sritula, along with Interior Ministry representatives, visited Bang Khae District office to investigate the identity card's issuance. District Director Tianchai Wongsuwan explained the legal procedures and supporting documents dating back to 2008, noting that officials at that time reviewed immigration documents and blood relationship evidence for paternal nationality verification. Tianchai clarified that previous statements to media merely explained existing documents without confirming legal compliance, as the incident occurred over a decade ago. The district is currently investigating only Cheng Zhao Wu's case due to its public exposure, with other relevant documents requiring coordination with the Interior Ministry and relevant registration offices. Regarding the possibility of retroactively investigating other foreign nationals with similar cases, Tianchai stated that procedures from a decade ago cannot be easily verified, but the news prompted officials to review the original case files. Police confirmed that Cheng Zhao Wu's case has no connection to a Chachoengsao weapons and explosives case, though they did not verify the legal validity of his identity card. Officials who processed the 2008 case have since retired, and there is currently insufficient grounds to summon them for testimony unless central authorities issue specific orders.

Yasuthorn Lays Out 8-Strategy Blueprint to Drive Innovation-Led National Transformation

Deputy PM Yasuthorn unveiled an eight-pillar innovation strategy to transform Thailand's economy and society over the next four years, focusing on integrating existing innovations across sectors from healthcare and semiconductors to AI and

11 May Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister Yasuthorn Wongswaddi, who also serves as Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, unveiled Thailand's innovation transformation vision at the Matichon X AIS Forum 2026 on May 11th at Pullman King Power Hotel. He emphasized that while Thailand possesses numerous innovations, they lack proper integration with various sectors including economics, society, and international relations. The ministry will identify sectoral challenges and deploy innovation to address issues ranging from disaster management to environmental protection over the next four years.

The comprehensive action plan comprises eight strategic pillars covering all development dimensions:

1. Promoting an innovation ecosystem connecting universities, government, private sector, funding sources, and entrepreneurs while advancing intellectual property commercialization 2. Developing Thailand as a health and wellness hub, from herbal medicine and cosmetics to advanced medical technology 3. Establishing semiconductor industry foundations to support future industries like electric vehicles, AI, and next-generation communications 4. Driving the nation forward through AI and data under the "AI for ALL" concept 5. Investing in frontier technologies including quantum computing, space exploration, and green energy 6. Promoting security technology covering cybersecurity, national defense, disaster management, and Net Zero goals 7. Advancing anti-corruption technology toward digital government with comprehensive data transparency and public services 8. Transforming universities to world-class standards as knowledge-creation centers and developers of high-quality human resources

Yasuthorn emphasized that innovation originates from people, and everyone can create it. The first strategy focuses on building ecosystem mechanisms within Thailand, with the ministry handling education, research, and technology studies aligned with global changes while developing workforce skills accordingly. He stressed that education, research, and innovation must grow together, and while Thailand's research capacity isn't yet at full shelf capacity, researchers need space for trial and error while ensuring research addresses future opportunities. Yasuthorn called for collective efforts to establish automatic research infrastructure that would survive any change in political leadership, ensuring innovators, researchers, and practitioners can connect to generate continuous research and development leading to income generation and sustained innovation cycles, including technology transfer from abroad.
