Kobbie Mainoo, Manchester United midfielder, credits manager Michael Carrick for playing a crucial role in restoring his confidence and that of his teammates, and celebrates scoring the winning goal in the red derby clash that saw Manchester United defeat Liverpool 3-2.
Mainoo emerged as the hero after firing in the winning goal in the 77th minute, securing a 3-2 home victory over Liverpool in the Premier League on May 3rd.
Looking back to the Ruben Amorim era, Mainoo had been dropped to the bench with an uncertain future at the club. However, under Carrick's management, he has proven himself again and become a key player, recently signing a new contract with the club until 2031.
After the match, Mainoo praised Carrick, saying: "He's been hugely important in this. The confidence he gives all the players – you want to follow him, fight for him, and die for him on the pitch."
"It's obviously been difficult. Every time you're not playing, you try to look ahead as much as possible and stay ready to perform," he added.
The 21-year-old also reflected on scoring the decisive goal, his first of the season in the league: "I'm delighted to have contributed a goal in this match. This is a very special game and occasion."
"I saw a couple of family members in the crowd. It's a blessing to be playing and a blessing to score. I used to sit in that corner – I feel incredibly fortunate to be at this point. I've always dreamed of moments like this. I'm just happy to be here at the club."
