David Attenborough, the hushed and reverent voice of nature documentaries, celebrates his 100th birthday

Sir David Attenborough marks his 100th birthday on Friday, celebrated by the BBC and cinemas worldwide for seven decades bringing wildlife documentaries into homes globally. The legendary naturalist famously deflects attention from himself,

9 May Khaosod

LONDON (AP) — The BBC is hosting a party for David Attenborough at the Royal Albert Hall. Cinemas are playing his nature films. Friends have spent weeks lavishing praise on the man and his work.

But the world's most famous wildlife presenter is likely to be uncomfortable with all the attention as he celebrates his 100th birthday on Friday, said Alastair Fothergill, the producer of some of Attenborough's most well-known documentaries and the director of Silverback Films.

"He's always been very clear to all of us that work with him: 'Remember, the animals are the stars, I'm not,'" Fothergill told The Associated Press. "So, yes, surprisingly for one of the most famous men on the planet, he doesn't like being famous at all."

Glorious gorillas

But Attenborough has had to accept the accolades this week as scientists, politicians and conservationists celebrated the man who has brought frolicking gorillas, breaching whales and tiny poisonous frogs into living rooms around the world for more than 70 years.

Through BBC programs such as Life on Earth, The Private Life of Plants and The Blue Planet, Attenborough has illuminated the beauty, ferocity and sometimes downright weirdness of nature in a hushed melodic voice that conveys his own awe at what he is witnessing.

Viewers who might never leave their hometowns were transported to the Himalayas, the Amazon and the unexplored forests of Papua New Guinea. But behind the stunning images was an attention to scientific accuracy that helped teach people about complex subjects like evolution, animal behavior and biodiversity.

And as the evidence mounted, he began to sound the alarm about climate change, ocean plastic and other human-caused threats to the planet.

That helped people understand not only how life evolved but, more importantly, why we have to protect it, said Professor Ben Garrod, an evolutionary biologist at the University of East Anglia and himself a broadcaster who has worked alongside Attenborough.

Attenborough, Garrod believes, initially saw himself as a neutral observer but was compelled to speak out when he saw that politicians, business leaders and the public weren't taking the emergency seriously.

"He is showing you the majesty, the ferocity, the fragility of the natural world. He shouldn't have ever had to have turned to policymaking and advocacy," Garrod said.

"I think it's very easy for a lot of people to say, 'He should have done it sooner. Why didn't he act 20 years, 30 years, 40 years ago?'" Garrod then asked: "Why didn't we?"

Fond of fossils from the start

Born in London on May 8, 1926, the same year as the late Queen Elizabeth II, Attenborough was raised on the grounds of what is now the University of Leicester, where his father was a senior lead

Brazilian Woman Attacks Hairdresser Over Bangs, Stabs Him with Knife in Shop

A Brazilian woman stabbed a hairdresser in São Paulo after he refused to refund her for a haircut she disliked, leaving him with minor injuries. The 27-year-old attacker was arrested and now faces assault and threats charges.

9 May Khaosod

A dramatic assault took place in São Paulo, Brazil when a young woman returned to a hair salon armed with a knife after being dissatisfied with her haircut and having her refund request denied. The attacker, identified as Laís Gabriela Barboza da Cunha, 27, struck on the afternoon of May 5 at a salon on São Paulo's west side.

Security camera footage shows Laís approaching from behind 29-year-old hairdresser Eduardo Ferrari and stabbing him in the back with a knife. Ferrari managed to evade the attack, and staff and security personnel quickly subdued the assailant and seized the weapon before police arrived. She was arrested on charges of assault and threats. Fortunately, Ferrari sustained only minor injuries and was hospitalized without life-threatening complications.

Investigation revealed that Laís had visited the salon on April 7, initially pleased with the work and even posting positive reviews on social media. Days later, she complained about her hair and demanded a refund. The salon insisted they had provided the agreed-upon service and refused the refund, suggesting she pursue the matter through legal channels. Subsequently, Laís sent threatening messages to the stylist, even threatening to "burn him alive."

Laís claimed the stylist had secretly cut her bangs too thin, making her look like a cartoon character, which prompted her to return. When security personnel attempted to escort her out, she seized the moment while Ferrari was serving another customer and stabbed him from behind.

Witnesses reported that even after being apprehended, Laís continued shouting threats, saying "If he doesn't return my money, he'll die anyway" and threatening to hire someone else to attack the stylist. Police have retained the knife as evidence and are proceeding with assault and threats charges. Ferrari's legal team believes the case should be upgraded to attempted murder charges given the attacker's prior death threats and the deliberate stab to the back.

Weekly Horoscope – Probability Trends for the Week (May 10-16, 2026): Small Gains Add Up to Big Fortune, Career Prospects Look Strong, Singles May Find Love

The weekly horoscope for May 10-16, 2026 forecasts mixed fortunes across zodiac signs, with Aries seeing accumulated small gains and career success, while Taurus enjoys foresight but faces business partner stress and relationship instabilit

9 May Khaosod

Weekly Horoscope Trends (May 10-16, 2026) by Setsathavut

Aries (Mesha): This week brings a steady stream of small windfalls that, when combined, amount to substantial gains. Don't dismiss minor good fortune. Though the path forward resembles a journey with occasional rain showers, you'll persevere to reach your destination. Business dealings and negotiations will succeed, though you may need to negotiate back and forth before achieving your goals. Personal matters look promising and you'll often gain the advantage, but work will present considerable headaches, requiring patience beyond what many colleagues experience.

Taurus (Pritsabha): This week you benefit from excellent foresight in anticipating future events before they occur. You may juggle multiple roles or positions, even adopting different personas for social situations, and may increase side professional work. You're well-protected from enemies with sufficient immunity against those who might take advantage. Your thoughts remain clear and sharp, but business partners will cause significant stress, and you may make hasty work decisions. Cherished items from loved ones may deteriorate, or romantic relationships lack the stability they should have.

Gemini (Mitthun): Everything you do this week will be under community observation. Whatever you do well, others will imitate without regard for social conventions. Some will try learning from your expertise but won't grasp it as well. Disputes among associates may arise—getting involved could cause trouble unless your children are involved. Money flows reasonably, but business negotiations and agreements should be approached carefully without expecting excellent results.

Cancer (Krakrut): You're particularly interested in work and investment matters this week, but beware of seeing things incorrectly or having opinions that don't align with proper standards. Misinformation that you stubbornly believe could damage your credibility and make you vulnerable to fraud. Financial matters may shake you, and old enemies won't threaten you until May passes. Once it does, you'll have the wisdom to handle opposition easily. Profits come from various sources, but intelligence and learning aren't clear now. Romance flows smoothly and closely.

Leo (Singha): This week you're fortunate in work involving imagination and creativity. However, poor karma may turn you into a profit-chasing gambler or stock trader, initially gaining then losing everything. Your accurate forecasting ability isn't necessarily beneficial—use this special ability wisely for real personal advantage. Worries about land, real estate, agriculture, or earthly possessions may arise, and foreign nationals or language barriers could easily provoke disputes. Couples may frequently clash.

Virgo (Kan): [Content incomplete in original]

Park Bo Young Delivers Inspiring Speech Upon Winning Best Leading Actress Award

Park Bo Young won Best Leading Actress at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards for her dual roles in "Our Unwritten Seoul," delivering an inspiring speech about overcoming self-doubt and appreciating others' hidden efforts behind their success.

9 May Khaosod

The 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards ceremony took place on May 8 at COEX Hall D in the Gangnam district of Seoul, with hosts Shin Dong Yup, Suzy, and Park Bo Gum. Actress Park Bo Young won the Best Leading Actress award for television for her dual roles as Mi-ji and Mi-re in "Our Unwritten Seoul," delivering a touching speech about life, competition, and the tendency to compare oneself to others.

Introducing herself as "Park Bo Young, who played Mi-ji and Mi-re," she reflected on the series' central concept: "Have you ever felt that someone else's life looked better than your own?" She continued, "Even though my life might look enviable to others, I too have thought that others' lives looked better than mine. However, I've now realized that we may have only seen their talents, but never the effort behind them."

She described how she finds competition exhausting and constantly feels the need to prove her worth, but seeing talented actors around her motivated her not to fall behind. "Perhaps it's my stubborn refusal to lose that molded me into who I am today. I want to express my deepest respect and gratitude to all actors who have been both beautiful competitors and sometimes like pacemakers pushing me forward," she said.

Regarding her role in "Our Unwritten Seoul," Park Bo Young called it a "bold decision." She admitted to questioning her own confidence and skills before filming began, but found courage she didn't know she had while reading the script. "I'm grateful to the screenwriter who created a story I couldn't ignore. Living as Mi-ji and Mi-re was a fulfilling time, and I'm grateful to the director who guided me when I was confused between the two characters."

She concluded with heartfelt thanks to the entire team, including stand-in actors, and expressed gratitude to fans and viewers, saying, "If I'm reborn next life, I still want to be my parents' daughter. Without fans and viewers supporting us, nothing would have meaning."

Her speech's closing message went viral on social media: "To all the foxes and badgers in this world, yesterday is already over, tomorrow hasn't come yet, and today still holds no certainties. So let's try to live today as beautifully as we can." The Baeksang Arts Awards, established in 1965 to promote Korean popular culture and art while boosting artists' morale, celebrated its 62nd edition this year, with a new musical category added to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Korean musical theater.

Arrest warrants being prepared for "Tae" and "James" in shooting of delivery worker

Police are preparing arrest warrants for two suspects known as "Tae" and "James" after a delivery worker was shot four times outside a house in Pathum Thani Province, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

9 May Khaosod

Arrest warrants are being prepared for two suspects nicknamed "Tae" and "James" in connection with a shooting that left 24-year-old delivery worker Anuruk (surname withheld) critically injured outside a house in Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani Province. The victim was shot four times with a 9mm weapon—twice in the abdomen, once in the left shoulder, and once in the left leg.

On May 9, 2025, police at Khlong Luang Station, led by Deputy Superintendent Chalat Hom-ngern, along with officers Nawachai Chomchai and Pongnoppon Rungroj, held an urgent meeting to pursue the case. They summoned Chatadar (surname withheld), 23, the victim's girlfriend, for additional questioning to help identify the suspects.

Deputy Superintendent Chalat stated that investigators have already identified the perpetrators and are gathering evidence to request arrest warrants from the court. The victim remains hospitalized at Thammasat Hospital and cannot yet provide a statement. Police confirmed two people were involved—one fired the weapon while the other served as the getaway driver. Both suspects are known by nicknames "James" and "Tae." Tae reportedly has three to four outstanding cases. It is expected the suspects will be apprehended shortly after the court approves the arrest warrants.

According to Chatadar, the victim currently suffers from paralysis from the waist down. Doctors indicated the most serious concern is spinal damage, which could affect the nervous system and requires close monitoring, particularly if surgery becomes necessary. She stated she does not know the motive for the attack. She described Anuruk as a private delivery truck driver and said she had only briefly encountered James at a friend's birthday party, while she had barely met Tae at all.

Go Theerasak Reveals Mae Moo Took First Trip in 4 Years but Panicked After News, Sends Encouragement to Everyone

Actor Nopharat's mother Mae Moo took her first trip in four years to Korea and Hong Kong but panicked during the journey, prompting close friend Go Theerasak to publicly encourage her amid ongoing family tensions.

9 May Khaosod

After young actor Nopharat publicly revealed that he hasn't been in contact with his mother Mae Moo Pimpha Phaka for an extended period following a previous major announcement—which could be considered a disconnect—and requested to move forward with his own life amid waves of criticism from various directions, close friend Go Theerasak Puntachariya recently opened up in an interview with Kat Sod Entertainment about the hot-button issue.

She shared: "I felt like I was speaking as a friend and wanted to give my friend encouragement because I knew she was already consuming social media news. We know what kind of person she is and how she feels. We just wanted to be a source of support, telling her 'Hey, we're rooting for you,' because everyone knows she's in an uncomfortable situation and suffering mentally too. We didn't want her thinking or doing anything harmful."

When asked how often she gets to talk with Mae Moo, Go revealed: "We talk all the time. Just yesterday we called each other. Mae Moo called to say thank you so much, saying Go was the first to speak up and defend her. She understands that people who know her might be afraid of the tour situation falling on them, but Go didn't fear anything like that. When she was on the boat crossing to Hong Kong-Macau, she said she couldn't breathe and panicked. I told her 'It's okay Mae Moo, we're here with you, we're friends.' Hana just managed to get her out on a trip for the first time in 4 years. They went to Korea and then Hong Kong and Macau. Mae Moo normally doesn't go anywhere—this was her first time and she took the scary route."

When asked where Mae Moo is now, Go said: "She's in Hong Kong and will be back soon."

Regarding Mae Moo's mental state, Go explained: "She said she panicked and couldn't breathe. She's sick, you know. She has depression too. We understand. All we can do is help her enjoy the trip and be with friends. She's been like this for a long time—not just the two years mentioned in the news. According to Hana, it's been four years total. But we haven't elaborated because family matters are private. Today I just wanted to clarify my role. We're also idols of this country. I wanted to tell society not to misunderstand the phrase 'taking time apart' as 'cutting off relations.' Taking time apart is okay, especially between a mother and child. Do we really want to normalize this in Thai society? Day after day, children come out and cut ties with their father or mother until people become accustomed to it, thinking parents only have the duty to provide and raise them, and once they're grown, they become their own person with no need to love or care for their parents. That's not right."

When asked if Mae Moo's depression and panic have improved, Go said: "She was doing better—that's why she could go out. But now I'm not sure if she'll go out again because something just happened very recently, just yesterday. We need to see how things are when she returns to Thailand."

As a friend, does she give encouragement? "I give encouragement to everyone because I'm not just a friend—I'm like an auntie to my friend's child. Fans, don't think we're enemies. We're family."

When asked if she's had a chance to talk with the young actor, Go said: "Not at all. We haven't talked because I probably haven't met him or been part of his activities. He's in a different generation, doing his own work."

Asked if she wanted to say anything to netizens who left harsh comments, Go joked: "I don't really want to say anything. I like it actually. I'm looking for messages I could sue for, but there aren't any yet (laughs). It shows that internet users are becoming more mindful. But Go is ready. However it comes, I'm ready. If today I could be the host to help settle things, I'd be happy to, because I believe society must be driven by gratitude and virtue, not by new sensational content."

Marking Culture and Art – Millions of Stories Under One Sky

Siam Paragon opens "Trillion Stories Under the Sky," a dual exhibition exploring identity and contemporary life through paintings of cats by Niam Mawornkonong and intricate cityscape maps by Zillustation, running through May 22, 2025.

9 May Khaosod

Siam Paragon, in collaboration with Joyman Gallery and M Contemporary, presents a special art experience through the exhibition "TRILLION STORIES UNDER THE SKY," inviting everyone to explore the meaning of identity and the world we inhabit while questioning what it means to be human, the nature of cities, and contemporary relationships. Two solo exhibitions from contemporary artists who interpret the world uniquely are on display from today through May 22, 2025 at Art Jewel, Asia's latest art exhibition venue on the 5th floor of Siam Paragon.

The exhibition brings together two compelling shows. "Millions of CATS and ONE CAT" by Niam Mawornkonong explores the relationships between image, systems, and identity in an era of overwhelming information flow and artificial intelligence. Through 27 acrylic paintings on canvas featuring countless cats, the work reflects on coexistence in a world where differences fade and similarities become societal standards. Rather than providing answers, this exhibition opens space for viewers to question perception and the meaning of existence in a world increasingly filled with "abundance" and "sameness" unlike ever before.

Complementing this is "BENEATH THE HORIZON LINE" by Zillustation (Karun Jiamviriyasetheir), inviting visitors to pause and discover the beauty of cities in previously unnoticed dimensions. Through artwork presenting the city as a living space filled with stories, encounters, and memories, the exhibition features intricate black and white lines that create artistic maps blending reality and imagination with pop art sensibilities and contemporary cultural references, resulting in a surreal world that simultaneously reflects hidden beauty and ways of life in the metropolis.

Both exhibitions in "TRILLION STORIES UNDER THE SKY" offer viewers a chance to reconsider the world amid countless surrounding narratives, inviting art lovers to explore "millions of stories" and discover what it means to exist in today's world under the same sky. On display now through May 22, 2025 at Art Jewel, 5th floor, Siam Paragon.
