Egypt President Celebrates Team's World Cup Historic Win
Egypt's national team won their first-ever World Cup knockout match, defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw on July 3, advancing to face Argentina or Cabo Verde next.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi posted on Facebook to congratulate the national team on advancing past the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by drawing 1-1 with Australia after 120 minutes and winning 4-2 on penalties on July 3. Emam Ashour gave Egypt an early lead in the 13th minute, but Australia equalized through Mohamed Hani's own goal in the 55th minute. Egypt advances to face the winner of the Argentina-Cabo Verde matchup on July 7.
This marks Egypt's first-ever knockout stage victory in World Cup history. Previously, Egypt began competing at the Round of 16 in 1934 but was eliminated, and in both 1990 and 2018, the team failed to advance past the group stage.
El-Sisi's post stated: "I extend my congratulations to the Egyptian people and the heroes of our national team on this historic achievement of advancing to the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time. You have proven that belief in your abilities, competitive team spirit, and determination to win bring success. God willing, the path of success and pride will continue."
