Egypt Advances Past Australia On Penalties At World Cup
Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the World Cup Round of 32 on July 3, advancing to face Argentina or Cape Verde in the next round.
Egypt's head coach Hossam Hassan is delighted with his team's victory, believing it makes the entire African continent proud, while Australia's manager Tony Popovic is deeply disappointed by his team's elimination despite demonstrating their football strength to the world.
In the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 match on July 3, Egypt drew 1-1 with Australia after 120 minutes, then won 4-2 on penalties. Egypt took the lead through Emam Ashour in the 13th minute, but Australia equalized in the 55th minute when Mohamed Hany scored an own goal.
Egypt advances to the Round of 16 and will face the winner of the Argentina-Cape Verde match on July 7. This marks Egypt's first knockout-stage victory in World Cup history.
Hassan said: "This victory and success belong to Egypt. We are making every Arab and African proud. I thank God for bestowing this reward upon us. God has honored us because Egyptians around the world have stood by us."
Popovic remarked: "It's difficult to accept. We showed the world the strength of Australian football. Our players are an excellent team, and I feel deeply sorry for them. It's unfortunate that our World Cup has ended and we must return home."
