Business Associations Set May 25 Meeting with Labor Minister to Propose 5-Point Labor Shortage Solution

Business associations will meet with Thailand's labor minister on May 25 to push for solutions to worker shortages affecting construction, agriculture, and tourism, including streamlined permits for foreign laborers from Cambodia and other

9h ago Khaosod

Thirty-six business associations will meet with Labor Minister Julpan Amornvivat on May 25 to submit proposals addressing Thailand's labor shortage crisis. Vibul Suppakropongkul, vice chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Labor and Workforce Development Committee, noted that global economic volatility stemming from Iran-Israel tensions threatens Thailand's export, agriculture, and tourism sectors, potentially reducing GDP growth by 0.1-0.8%. While international tensions could create export opportunities for Thai goods, the private sector faces severe shortages in both domestic and foreign workers affecting construction, agriculture, industry, and services. Business leaders are urging the government to separate international conflicts from economic policy decisions, particularly regarding Cambodian workers. "On May 25, we will meet with Labor Minister Julpan Amornvivat to submit our proposals and request that the prime minister review them," said Suchart Chantranakrachai, vice chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries. The labor shortage threatens numerous SMEs. Thailand currently has 3.9 million foreign workers, but approximately 194,000 Cambodian workers have expired work permits. Without resolution, these workers will become illegal laborers, creating security concerns. The government should expedite work permit renewals for all foreign nationals. The five proposals are: 1) Renew work permits for all foreign workers in Thailand; 2) Deny permits for undocumented workers; 3) Reduce procedures and costs for importing foreign labor; 4) Resolve e-Work Permit system issues; and 5) Expand foreign labor sources to include Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

Police Raid Underground Shrimp Fishing Betting Operation in Bangkok, Arrest 16 People Including Illegal Workers

Police raided an illegal gambling operation at a Bangkok shrimp pond on May 22, arresting 16 people including operators, gamblers, and undocumented migrant workers who bet on whether caught shrimp would weigh an even or odd amount.

9h ago Khaosod

On May 22, 2569, police led by Pol. Col. Worawit Yanjinda, commander of the Tourist Police Division, coordinated a raid on a shrimp fishing pond in Bangkok's Ladprao district following intelligence reports. Officers arrested 16 people involved in an illegal gambling operation where patrons bet on whether the weight of caught shrimp would be even or odd, seizing digital scales, betting slips, cash totaling 5,183 baht, and an illegal claw machine.

The investigation began on May 21 when undercover officers confirmed the operation was running illegal gambling activities. At approximately 7:10 p.m. on May 22, police moved in and arrested three operators responsible for weighing shrimp, recording bets, and managing cash, along with six active gamblers caught in the act. Officers also discovered eight foreign laborers, nationals of Laos and Myanmar, working illegally without proper documentation.

Rail Department Files Charges Against All Vehicles Parked on Tracks During Bus-Train Collision

The Rail Department filed charges against vehicle owners who parked on train tracks before a bus-train collision on May 16, marking one of the first prosecutions under Thailand's newly enacted Rail Transport Act.

9h ago Khaosod

On May 22, 2025 at Makkasan Police Station, Raksit Waitee, Director of the Legal Division of the Department of Rail Transport, filed charges with investigating officers after receiving authorization from the department's director to prosecute vehicle drivers who parked on railroad tracks starting May 16 at 3:33 PM until the time of the train-bus collision. Charges were filed under the Rail Transport Act 2568 and other criminal statutes.

Raksit stated that the department has filed charges with police to proceed under the Rail Transport Act after discovering damage to the transportation system affecting the general public. The specific number of violations or charges cannot be clearly determined at this stage as each case must be considered individually, similar to traffic laws. Investigation officers will be responsible for gathering evidence and examining facts in detail.

When asked whether the charges relate to obstructions preventing the train from operating, Raksit said this is an important factor, as the law establishes liability for causing damage to the rail transportation system or obstructing train operations. For cases where vehicles may have unintentionally parked on tracks without intent to violate the law, Raksit noted that circumstances must be examined case-by-case, including how the situation occurred and whether drivers could have avoided or moved their vehicles.

Raksit emphasized that the Rail Transport Act is new legislation that took effect March 27, making this one of the first cases prosecuted under it. Regarding bus operators, charges will depend on criminal law elements including the act, damage caused, and the perpetrator. If no damage occurred, charges might be limited to attempted violation.

On the issue of employee substance use, Raksit revealed that following the incident, orders were issued to test all involved employees, emphasizing that drug use is unacceptable in any form of transportation, though criminal charges depend on legal elements.

When asked about the primary cause of the accident, Raksit stressed that parked vehicles are only one factor, and negligence from multiple parties—including bus drivers, train staff, and relevant officials—must be investigated thoroughly. The department has no authority to determine guilt but has a duty to oversee and prevent recurrence.

Regarding operator licensing under the new rail transport framework, Raksit noted the law recently took effect and licensing is ongoing, with approximately 300-400 of 900 applicants processed. During the transition period, existing workers may continue operating normally to avoid disrupting nationwide rail service.

Suchat Choomklin Files Additional Complaint Against Ice Ratchanok Over Continued Defamatory Posts; Lawyer Denies Censorship Lawsuit

Suchat Choomklin's legal team filed additional defamation charges against Pheu Thai MP Ratchanok Srinork over social media posts alleging she made derogatory remarks about the minister, with authorities also investigating an AI-generated vi

9h ago Khaosod

On May 22, 2026, at Thonglor Police Station, lawyer Nathawut Wongniam representing Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Choomklin filed additional charges against Ratchanok Srinork ("Ice"), a Pheu Thai party list MP. A previous complaint was filed on May 17 regarding social media posts that allegedly defamed the minister. Although Ice did not mention Suchat by name, the lawyer argues her posts contained derogatory remarks such as "evil person" and "low conduct" that distorted facts and damaged his reputation.

The lawyer stated that Suchat passed constitutional vetting upon assuming ministerial office and has no serious ethical violations, making legal action necessary to protect his reputation. Separately, authorities are investigating an AI-generated video account called "Khun Murf Chatter" that manipulated Suchat's image in clips viewed over 3 million times.

Additionally, legal teams are reviewing posts by Ratchanok allegedly referencing the monarchy through the "Sod Sroai Mala" poem, as well as her sharing of information about government officials and politicians, to determine if they violate laws. Other Pheu Thai MPs may also face legal action if wrongdoing is found. The lawyer stressed this is lawful action, not a silencing lawsuit, and warned the public to exercise caution when sharing information, as spreading false data could violate the Computer Crimes Act.

The cases against Ratchanok include four primary charges: posts about "evil person governing the city-taking bribes," posts about "low and disgraceful conduct," allegations of election fraud comments, and posts during a debate about the Social Security Office's SKYY9 building purchase. Most charges involve defamation by advertising and Computer Crimes Act violations, except the SKYY9 case which carries specific defamation charges. All cases remain under investigation with no final court judgment yet.

Election Commission clarifies ballot security measures for Bangkok governor and Pattaya mayor elections with tamper-proof stamps

The Election Commission outlined ballot security measures for Bangkok and Pattaya local elections on June 28, including tamper-proof stamps that prevent counterfeiting while maintaining voter anonymity.

9h ago Khaosod

On May 22, 2569, the Election Commission Office clarified ballot security measures for the upcoming local elections, responding to public discussion on social media about anti-counterfeiting measures for ballots in Bangkok Metropolitan Council, Bangkok governor, Pattaya City Council, and Pattaya mayor elections scheduled for June 28, 2569.

The EC explained that the Local Government Official and Council Member Election Act, B.E. 2562, stipulates that elections must use direct and secret ballot voting as a fundamental democratic principle. Under Section 37 of the act, the EC is responsible for ballot printing, printing control, and delivery procedures, while Section 77 specifies ballot box and ballot characteristics as determined by the EC.

Section 134 of the EC's election regulations designates the EC or its authorized representatives to oversee ballot printing and delivery. Anti-counterfeiting measures include ensuring sufficient ballots for registered voters and, under Section 133, stamping ballots with marks designated by provincial election directors before use.

Ballots for local elections receive stamps at the perforation to prevent their use in other jurisdictions. These anti-counterfeiting measures, regardless of method used, cannot identify or trace individual voters and do not compromise the principle of secret ballot voting as required by law.

Patrice Evra Tells England Fans to Stop Singing 'It's Coming Home' If They Want to Win the World Cup

Former French defender Patrice Evra jokingly told England fans to stop singing "It's Coming Home" because he believes the anthem is a curse preventing them from winning major tournaments.

9h ago Khaosod

Former French national team defender Patrice Evra has advised English football fans to stop singing their popular anthem 'It's Coming Home,' arguing that the song is actually a curse preventing the team from winning championships. England is consistently favored as a tournament contender, yet they regularly fail to achieve their dreams. Evra joked with England supporters to abandon the celebratory chant 'It's Coming Home,' which symbolizes bringing the trophy back home, because he views it as a curse.

"England is always the favorite to win the championship, then when they reach the semifinals or finals, they always disappoint. They have a good record in the Euros and have quality players," Evra said. "So now we have to see how Thomas Tuchel and his team will perform. But there's one thing I've always wanted to ask English fans: don't sing 'It's Coming Home.' It's a curse. When they start singing that song, that's when I know England won't win the trophy. If they didn't sing it, I think they could win the World Cup. It's a curse, just like Arsenal had to wait 22 years."

Teachers and Students in Fear as 16-Year-Old Armed with Knife Enters School During Lunch Break After Cannabis-Induced Mental Health Crisis

9h ago Khaosod

Teachers and students were left shaken when a 16-year-old wielding a knife entered the school during midday break, showing signs of a cannabis-induced mental health episode. Police found the teenager had a history of psychiatric treatment at Ta Takiap Hospital dating back to 2567 following cannabis use.

On May 22, 2569, police commander Chanyawit Khwakkan ordered deputy commander Manas Chantavad and other units to conduct a security inspection of Ban Nong Prayot School in Ta Takiap District, Chachoengsao Province to reassure the community.

The incident occurred at 1:07 p.m. when Ta Takiap Police received a report from the emergency radio center that a man was seen carrying a knife near the school. When officers arrived, the suspect had already left on a motorcycle. Residents told police that the youth usually came to pick up his younger brother who studies at the school. Upon tracking him home, officers found the 16-year-old identified as "A" (pseudonym), who had been receiving psychiatric treatment at Ta Takiap Hospital since 2567 for cannabis-induced mental illness. He has a five-year history of cannabis use and also uses methamphetamine.

Deputy Commander Manas Chantavad met with school principal Siam Saowkul and traumatized teachers. The principal explained that the teenager, a former student, became delusional during lunch break and arrived wielding a knife to threaten staff and students. Fortunately, the school had secured its gates with guards on duty and had previously conducted emergency response drills, which helped control the situation. Police responded within ten minutes of the alert.

Nearby residents and a vendor who witnessed and recorded the incident remain frightened, worried the youth may reoffend. They recalled hiding behind trash bins in panic and noted the suspect had displayed similar dangerous behavior since the Songkran period.

Police explained they followed proper procedures for detaining the mentally ill individual. The teenager was transferred to Ta Takiap Hospital for rehabilitation treatment, and police will conduct regular patrols in the area going forward.
