Plot twist! Thailand unlikely to buy 2026 World Cup rights over cost concerns, opens door for private sector

Thailand's state broadcaster is unlikely to purchase 2026 World Cup rights, citing the 1.3 billion baht asking price as economically unjustifiable and unfavorable U.S.-Mexico-Canada broadcast times, though private companies may pursue the r

1d ago Khaosod

Sources within Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) report that no formal decision has been reached on whether to purchase 2026 World Cup broadcasting rights after the agent maintained the asking price of 1.3 billion baht, with officials deeming it uneconomical and signaling that private companies are welcome to pursue the rights themselves.

The NBTC sources revealed that the agency is still evaluating the value proposition comprehensively, including the license fee, broadcast conditions, match timing, advertising revenue potential, and whether the budget allocation serves the public interest. Thailand's negotiating position has been anchored around 600 million baht, the budget level the NBTC previously supported for World Cup broadcasts, which has served as the baseline for negotiations with the rights holder.

However, negotiations have stalled because the rights holder's expectations, conveyed through its agent, remain significantly higher than Thailand's ceiling—with the agent insisting the price cannot go below 1.3 billion baht. Officials stressed that the core issue is not a lack of interest in World Cup coverage, but rather whether the expenditure justifies the returns. The 2026 tournament spans only about one month, yet the licensing fees are exceptionally high. Additionally, the government has consulted with sports associations and related football organizations, some of which suggest that if such substantial budgets must be spent, the funds might better serve the public through other initiatives.

Another complicating factor is that the 2026 World Cup, being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, presents timing challenges for Thai viewers, with matches starting as early as 3 a.m. and ending around 10 a.m. Thai time. This unfavorable schedule may dampen viewer engagement compared to tournaments held in Europe or Asia, and local businesses traditionally benefiting from World Cup events—such as restaurants, entertainment venues, and viewing parties—may struggle to capitalize fully. However, if private sector evaluations show the investment worthwhile and they wish to pool resources to purchase the rights, they are free to proceed.

Commercial advertising and revenue opportunities also face headwinds due to the inconvenient broadcast times limiting broad audience reach, resulting in weak private sector interest in co-funding the license purchase, particularly when return-on-investment calculations suggest advertising revenue recovery may fall short of licensing costs.

NACC Charges Former Bangkok Civil Works Chief with Unusual Wealth Accumulation, Seeks Asset Seizure and Dismissal

The National Anti-Corruption Commission charged former Bangkok Civil Works Division head Wuthi Hengwattana with accumulating unexplained assets worth over 8 million baht during his 2009-2018 tenure, seeking asset seizure and dismissal.

1d ago Khaosod

On May 18, 2025, Surapong Intharawat, Secretary-General of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC), announced that the NACC has found Wuthi Hengwattana, former head of Bangkok's Civil Works Division, guilty of unusual wealth accumulation totaling 8,032,103 baht.

Investigations revealed that during his tenure as Civil Works Division head for Bangkok from 2009 to 2018, Wuthi accumulated assets in his name, his spouse's name, and his children's names totaling 8,032,103 baht without being able to prove or explain their source. These assets include:

1. Bank deposits in his spouse's accounts across three accounts totaling 1,360,000 baht 2. Land and buildings located in Min Buri District, Bangkok, registered jointly under his spouse's and children's names, valued at 5,382,967 baht 3. One Toyota Fortuner vehicle registered in Wuthi's name, valued at 1,289,136 baht

The NACC determined that Wuthi possessed unusually excessive wealth and referred the case to the Office of the Attorney General to file a petition with the court for asset forfeiture to the state. The NACC also recommended that Wuthi's employer impose dismissal as disciplinary action, citing corrupt practices under the 2018 Anti-Corruption Act, Section 122. If full asset seizure cannot be enforced, the court is authorized to enforce seizure against his other assets within a ten-year period under Section 125 of the Anti-Corruption Act.

Department of Geology Explains Cause of 5.3 Magnitude Earthquake in Myanmar from Sagaing Fault; Two Aftershocks Recorded

A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck near southern Myanmar on May 18, caused by movement along the Sagaing Fault, with tremors felt across Thailand but no structural damage reported.

1d ago Khaosod

The Department of Geology has explained that a 5.3 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar was caused by movement along the Sagaing Fault, with two aftershocks recorded. Residents in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Chiang Mai, and Lampang felt tremors, but authorities confirm no structural damage to buildings occurred.

On May 18, 2025, the Geological Disaster Operations Center of the Department of Mineral Resources under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment reported a 5.3 magnitude earthquake occurring at 09:05 AM Thailand time at a depth of 10 kilometers in the sea near southern Myanmar's coast. This was classified as a moderate earthquake, located at latitude 16.351°N and longitude 96.286°E, approximately 247 kilometers southwest of Mae Sod District in Tak Province and about 500 kilometers from Bangkok. Two aftershocks measuring 2.7-3.2 magnitude were recorded by 2:00 PM.

The earthquake was caused by movement along the Sagaing Fault in Myanmar, a right-lateral strike-slip fault moving at approximately 2 centimeters per year. Historically, this fault has produced major earthquakes, including a 7.3 magnitude quake in 1930 that killed over 500 people, and an 8.2 magnitude earthquake on March 28, 2025, which killed over 5,000 people and was felt across many areas of Thailand.

The tremors from this earthquake were felt by residents in high-rise buildings in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Chiang Mai, and Lampang, with intensity classified at level 4 (light) on the Modified Mercalli Scale. Most people felt the shaking, but it caused no structural damage to buildings. The Geological Disaster Operations Center continues to monitor and assess the situation, providing guidance to networks and the public while coordinating with relevant agencies to closely track ongoing seismic activity.

Weerawut Announces 'Thai Sugarcane Without Burning' at 0% After Historic Low of 3.8% This Year

Thailand's sugar industry slashed burned sugarcane to a historic low of 3.8% this season, down from 60-70%, through collaboration between government, mills, and 1.5 million farmers shifting to fresh cane systems. Industry Minister Weerawut

1d ago Khaosod

Industry Minister Weerawut Silpaascha announced a major victory for Thailand's sugarcane and sugar industry in the 2568/2569 production season, successfully reducing burned sugarcane to just 3.8%—a historic low compared to the previous 60-70% burning rates. This represents a crucial turning point for Thai agriculture and industry in combating PM 2.5 dust pollution and climate change.

"This is not just a number, but evidence that Thailand can develop its economy while protecting the environment," Weerawut stated. "We achieved this through the coordinated efforts of three sectors: the government, 58 sugar mills, and approximately 1.5 million sugarcane farmers nationwide who have collectively transitioned from burning sugarcane to quality fresh cane systems."

This collaboration has dramatically reduced burned sugarcane while improving cane quality and production efficiency. Average sugar yield per ton of cane increased from 109.51 kilograms to 113.55 kilograms, demonstrating that fresh cane provides superior economic returns compared to burned cane.

Weerawut announced new targets for the next production season: reducing burned sugarcane to below 3% and eventually reaching zero percent through a full Zero Burn initiative. The ministry will simultaneously develop a "Green Value Chain" connecting green sugarcane to green sugar, bioindustry, biomass energy, and carbon credit markets, aiming to transform Thailand's sugarcane industry into a fully green economy.

Supporting measures for farmers and sugar mills include low-interest loans, agricultural machinery, investment promotion incentives (BOI), and carbon credit trading mechanisms to generate new income streams and enhance Thailand's sugar competitiveness in global markets.

"Thai sugar no longer sells just sweetness, but responsibility to the world," Weerawut emphasized. "We must position Thai sugar as 'green sugar' produced from fresh cane that is environmentally friendly and meets international trade standards."

Thailand ranks as the world's second-largest sugar exporter after Brazil, and this success in reducing burned sugarcane is viewed as a potential model for other Thai agricultural and industrial sectors to adopt green economy practices.

Deputy Industry Minister Nattapol Rangsitpol attributed the achievement to multiple proactive measures, including requiring sugar mills to accept fresh cane from day one, daily limits on burned cane intake, cessation of burned cane acceptance during New Year periods, and machinery credit support programs with low interest rates.

Secretary-General of the Sugar and Sugarcane Committee Bai Noi Suwannchart noted plans to implement modern technology throughout the system and introduce new business models, while accelerating value creation from agricultural residues through innovations such as wood pellet production.

Concerning the Constitutional Court's acceptance of the 400-billion-baht emergency decree, he expressed confidence it should not be problematic, but noted the court has 60 days to rule and Parliament has suspended its consideration pending the court's decision, as parliamentary review can only proceed following the Constitutional Court's judgment.

Train driver admits meth use days before deadly Bangkok crash

The driver of a freight train that collided with a bus in Bangkok on May 16, killing eight people, admitted to regular methamphetamine and cannabis use, with his last use occurring 10 days before the deadly crash.

1d ago Khaosod

BANGKOK — Police said the driver of a freight train involved in the deadly train-bus collision in Bangkok admitted to regularly using methamphetamine and cannabis, with his last reported drug use occurring 10 days before the crash.

The revelation came as investigators continued probing the collision between freight train No. 2126, travelling from Laem Chabang to Bang Sue, and air-conditioned bus No. 206 at the Makkasan railway crossing beneath the Airport Rail Link on Asok-Din Daeng Road on 16 May. The crash triggered a major fire, killing eight people and injuring more than 30 others.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Worasak Pisitbanakorn, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 1, said on 18 May that police had set up a joint investigation team following a two-hour case meeting at Makkasan Police Station.

The bus driver has been charged with reckless driving causing death, injury, serious injury and property damage.

Meanwhile, the train driver and a railway flagman were charged with negligence causing death and injury. Investigators said the two men gave conflicting statements, with the flagman insisting he had signalled properly while the train driver claimed no warning signal had been given.

Police said investigators would inspect every railway crossing along the train's route to examine train speeds and determine whether warning signals were clearly given at each crossing.

Authorities have also requested permission from the State Railway of Thailand to reconstruct the incident and review the driver's field of vision. Investigators are seeking data from the train's black box and questioning railway officials over operational regulations, including why train drivers are currently allowed to operate without formal driving licences.

Police said the train driver claimed he regularly used methamphetamine and cannabis, sometimes taking several pills at a time, though investigators have not yet confirmed the statement. A background check also found he had previously faced a drug-use case in 2019 in Thung Song district of Nakhon Si Thammarat province.

Authorities said police would work with related agencies to strictly enforce laws at railway crossings to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Elderly Woman, 63, Infected with Serious Disease from New Husband, Unable to Get Family Care, Seeks Temple Refuge but Hits Religious Rules

A 63-year-old woman infected with a serious disease was left at a Pathum Thani temple by her granddaughter after her family refused to care for her, but temple rules prohibit women from residing alone on the grounds. The abbot expressed sym

1d ago Khaosod

An elderly woman facing hardship has just discovered she contracted a serious disease from her new husband. With her children and grandchildren unable to provide care and her son homeless, she placed her final hope on asking her granddaughter to drive her to a temple, seeking what she hoped would be a final refuge in life. However, she has encountered restrictions under religious department rules.

On May 18, 2025, at Sai Hairm Temple in Lam Luka district, Pathum Thani province, Phra Ajarn Ard Sophon Pattavet, the temple's abbot and district religious official, revealed that temple staff notified him that security cameras captured a white sedan entering the temple grounds at 9:12 AM that morning. The car parked in front of the abbot's residence before letting the elderly woman struggle to get her belongings out of the vehicle and then driving away immediately.

When temple staff and monks questioned her, they learned she was a 63-year-old from Prachuap Khiri Khan province suffering from a serious illness and mobility issues requiring a walking stick. She explained that in 2018, she lived with a new husband at a temple in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. When he later died from the same serious disease, she discovered she had been infected by him.

After that, the temple could no longer accommodate her due to religious regulations prohibiting women from residing alone within temple grounds. She then sought shelter with her sister and her daughter, whom the sister was raising. However, she was asked to leave after a short time. She then moved in with her granddaughter in Pathum Thani province, but after about a month, the granddaughter said she was unable to care for her due to her in-laws needing to stay there for medical treatment. With nowhere else to turn, the elderly woman decided to seek the compassion of the temple and asked her granddaughter to drive her there.

Phra Ajarn Ard expressed deep sympathy, noting that the elderly woman could barely walk and suffered from chronic illness with no family willing to care for her. He acknowledged the temple's dilemma: "This is not an animal we can simply leave at the temple for care. If it were an animal, we could feed it. But this is a human being, a woman, and according to temple regulations, we cannot allow a woman to reside alone within the temple grounds."

He explained that while the temple has female volunteers who work and then return home, no one resides permanently in the temple. "We cannot blame society. We must look at the reasons and circumstances. The family said they were unprepared and unable to care for her. But what specifically prevented them? This requires a family conversation to find alternative solutions, not simply abandoning her at the temple like this."

Phra Ajarn Ard coordinated with Bun Pibulyanasthan, head of social welfare promotion at Lam Sam Gaew Municipality in Pathum Thani, who came to investigate and interview the woman. Officials discovered she has two children and had previously stayed with a monk brother in Prachuap Khiri Khan, but was told she couldn't stay due to being a woman, citing religious department regulations prohibiting women from residing alone in temples.

When officials contacted her daughter, she said she was unable to provide care. Her son was found to be homeless with no fixed address, unable to care for his mother. When they contacted the granddaughter who drove her to the temple, she also said she couldn't accommodate her and claimed the grandmother decided to ask the temple for shelter herself.

Initially, Lam Sam Gaew Municipality officials coordinated with the Pathum Thani provincial office of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security to provide temporary care under their supervision. They are now investigating the family's capacity to care for the elderly woman.
