Police arrest major pork vendor for illegal lending at excessive interest rates, claims she's helping struggling people, denies charging exorbitant rates

A pork vendor in Sukhothai province was arrested for illegally lending money at 47 percent annual interest rates; she claims she was helping struggling vendors and denies the rates were excessive.

6h ago Khaosod

Special Branch Police arrested a major pork vendor operating at multiple locations in Sukhothai province for illegally lending money at interest rates exceeding legal limits. The suspect claims she was providing financial assistance to struggling people and denies charging exorbitant interest rates.

On May 22, 2025, officers led by Special Branch Region 4 command, armed with a search warrant from Sukhothai Provincial Court, raided a residence in Tambon Wang Luek, Amphoe Si Samrong, Sukhothai province, and arrested Nang Nam Khaang, 53, the homeowner and operator of multiple large pork vending stalls throughout Sukhothai province. Police seized one mobile phone as evidence.

The arrest followed an investigation by Special Branch Region 4 detectives who received a tip that Nang Nam Khaang was operating an illegal money-lending operation charging customers in Si Samrong district interest rates above legal limits. Field investigation confirmed the illegal lending activity, leading to the search warrant and arrest. An examination of her mobile phone revealed numerous contacts from customers seeking loans.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to operating the illegal lending business for over 8 years, charging 47 percent interest per annum. Her customers consisted mainly of market vendors and personal acquaintances, whom she claims she was helping financially. She maintains she was not charging excessive interest rates and does not believe her actions constituted wrongdoing.

Police have filed charges and transferred her for further legal prosecution.

Ride-hailing Driver Warns of Scammers Posing as Customers, Suspicious of QR Code Request, Hangs Up Twice

A Bangkok ride-hailing driver narrowly avoided a scam after a fake customer requested he scan a QR code, which would have transferred his bank funds; he hung up twice when asked for banking details.

6h ago Khaosod

On May 22, a Facebook user with the account name Bnkx.7 posted a video warning about scammers impersonating customers. The post read: "Warning about scammers—they're getting really clever now, posing as customers requesting rides through the app, then sending QR codes to scan. Please be careful everyone."

The reporter spoke with 25-year-old Chalemsai (surname withheld), known as Bank, the ride-hailing driver and author of the post. Bank recounted that on May 17 around 3 a.m., he picked up a passenger in the Thonglor area to drop off in Samut Prakan. He then received a call from what turned out to be a scammer posing as a customer who had hailed him through the app. The scammer claimed it wasn't a passenger pickup—just a request to collect documents from a hospital and deliver them to Samut Prakan, a 32-kilometer distance. The scammer offered 1,000 baht for the round trip, though the app showed only 338 baht. The scammer also requested to add Bank on LINE, claiming he would send job details through the messaging app.

Bank initially said the job could be sent through the app, but the scammer insisted on using LINE, claiming it was hospital documentation. Bank wasn't suspicious at that point and shared his LINE contact. When Bank asked about payment, the scammer said he would pay through LINE. Not yet alarmed, Bank drove to the location the scammer had marked. Halfway there, the scammer called again, told him to stop, and said he'd sent the job through LINE. When Bank checked, he found a QR code. Unsure what it was, the scammer asked him to scan it. That's when Bank became suspicious. When the scammer asked what bank Bank used and insisted he scan the QR code, Bank realized the danger and hung up.

The scammer called back again. Bank pretended he had scanned the code, and the scammer claimed the money had been deposited. Bank said it hadn't arrived, so the scammer asked if he'd confirmed the transaction or entered an OTP code. Hearing this, Bank immediately hung up again. Shortly after, the order was canceled.

Bank said he never imagined scammers would operate this way—hailing drivers through the app and deceiving them with smooth talk until they become victims. Comments on the post revealed that taxi drivers have been targeted by this same scam frequently. Bank reflected that if he'd fallen for it that day, he would have been stressed and lost all his account funds, which would be terrifying for someone less cautious.

Bank's final message to other ride-hailing drivers: Be careful when working late night or making deliveries. Check carefully if a customer asks you to scan a QR code or access a banking app before handing over your phone—that's definitely a scammer.

Can Thailand Finally Wake Up to Its Dismal Safety Standards?

A freight train crashed into a bus at a Bangkok crossing Saturday, killing eight people and injuring over 30, prompting calls for Thailand to establish an independent public safety department rather than rely on reactive measures after trag

6h ago Khaosod

Saturday's horrific accident — in which a freight train crashed into a public bus at the Makkasan crossing, killing eight people and injuring more than 30 — can be viewed in at least two ways.

The first perspective: An unfortunate freak accident The first view is that this was merely an unfortunate, one-off accident. Under this outlook, similar incidents could supposedly be prevented simply by addressing the immediate factors involved: a train driver who tested positive for drugs, a crossing officer who allegedly failed to properly warn the driver, and a careless bus driver who stopped directly on the tracks expecting the train to stop. Under this interpretation, Saturday becomes little more than a tragically unlucky day for the victims. Adherents to this view believe there is little need for broader reflection once the immediate loopholes are closed. We see this in the sudden burst of reactive measures: Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn ordering daily drug and alcohol tests for all public transport drivers, and Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt proposing the separation of rail and road traffic, possibly through the construction of a tunnel.

The second perspective: A systemic wake-up call The second way of seeing this is to accept it as a harsh wake-up call for Thai society. We must acknowledge that this is not an isolated tragedy, but an incident emblematic of a society with a dismal public safety culture. It demands a holistic, systematic, and continuous approach to tackle the root problem, rather than treating the Makkasan crossing in a vacuum. Since I subscribe to this second viewpoint, it inevitably leads me to a singular conclusion: Thailand urgently needs an independent Department or Office of Public Safety. This body should report directly to both the prime minister and the public several times a year, while possessing broad authority to audit relevant state agencies and issue policy recommendations. Just as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) continually strategizes to increase foreign tourist arrivals, this new body's sole mandate would be to continuously elevate public safety standards across the Kingdom in all respects.

Proactive prevention over reactive remedies A primary responsibility of this new entity would be to identify public safety vulnerabilities before they claim lives—to actively imagine what could go seriously wrong, where it could happen, and how such risks could be mitigated. Thailand must stop relying on reactive, post-tragedy reforms driven by mass-casualty events. Furthermore, the body should not limit its scope to road safety; it should also oversee marine transportation safety, high-rise building regulations, and other areas of public risk. Thailand needs fervent individuals driven by a genuine commitment to make Thailand safer. If budget constraints are cited as an obstacle, the office could easily be established under the umbrella of the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth), drawin

Thai Panel Defends Scrapping Border MOUs to ASEAN+3 Diplomats

Thailand's Senate committee briefed ASEAN+3 diplomats on plans to revoke 1990s border agreements with Cambodia, arguing they fail to protect Thai sovereignty amid unresolved territorial disputes and repeated Cambodian violations.

6h ago Khaosod

BANGKOK — On May 22, 2026, Thai Senator Noppadon Inna briefed ASEAN+3 diplomats on Thailand's effort to revoke the 2000 and 2001 Memorandums of Understanding with Cambodia, arguing these agreements undermine Thailand's sovereignty and national interests amid persistent border and maritime disputes.

On Friday, the Senate Extraordinary Committee investigating the advantages and disadvantages of scrapping the two MOUs held a special briefing at Parliament in Bangkok. The session, chaired by Noppadon, drew ambassadors and diplomatic envoys from ASEAN nations as well as China, Japan, and South Korea.

Noppadon said the briefing aimed to explain the committee's conclusions directly to regional diplomats following heightened international focus on the Thai-Cambodian border situation. The committee unanimously recommended revoking both agreements after months of field research, consultations with military leaders, and examination of legal and historical documents.

According to Noppadon, the committee consulted with the Royal Thai Army, Royal Thai Navy, Ministry of Defense, and the Foreign Ministry's Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs. The panel also conducted field surveys across seven border provinces and received briefings from the First and Second Army Areas about previous armed conflicts and border tensions.

The committee determined that the MOUs no longer adequately safeguard Thailand's territorial sovereignty, maritime rights, or national security, particularly given unresolved overlapping land and sea claims.

In remarks to the diplomats, Noppadon contended that ongoing ambiguity over border demarcation has fueled persistent tensions between the nations, especially stemming from conflicting interpretations of historical maps, including the contentious 1:200,000-scale map tied to the Franco-Siamese boundary delimitation process.

He also alleged Cambodia has repeatedly violated agreements, dismissed Thai diplomatic complaints, and committed provocative actions along the border.

Noppadon cited Ban Nong Chan in Sa Kaeo Province and Chong An Ma in Ubon Ratchathani Province as examples.

Regarding Ban Nong Chan, he noted that hundreds of thousands of Cambodian refugees fled into Thailand during Cambodia's civil war in 1979. Thailand, working with organizations including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the Thai Red Cross, provided humanitarian assistance, food, shelter, and medical care at border refugee camps.

Noppadon asserted that after the conflict concluded, some Cambodian nationals refused repatriation and continued settling on Thai soil, creating long-standing friction that eventually escalated into armed skirmishes.

At Chong An Ma, he stated Thailand had temporarily eased border controls as a humanitarian and neighborly gesture.

Large Drug Haul Seized as Rangers Hunt Down Trafficking Gang, Over 1 Million Methamphetamine Pills Captured Along Mekong River from Laos

Rangers seized approximately 1 million methamphetamine pills along the Mekong River in Loei province after suspects fled during an early morning interdiction near the Laos border on May 22.

6h ago Khaosod

Rangers from unit TP.2109 conducted a major drug interception, seizing approximately 1 million methamphetamine pills packed in three sacks along the Mekong River across from Laos at 4:00 AM on May 22, 2569. Officers detected suspicious movement along Highway 211 and the riverbank near Ban Sngao in Pak Chom district, Loei province, directly opposite Ban Kone Kham in Muang Vientiane, Vientiane Province, Laos. Upon approaching the area, they discovered a group attempting to load black packages into a vehicle. When officials revealed themselves and fired warning shots, the suspects fled by car toward Ban Pak Mang while others escaped into the banana plantation along the river.

During a thorough search, officers found three black sacks along the roadside and near the riverbank, along with a blue long-tail boat with one engine (identified as Laotian). Follow-up investigation revealed the suspects had also stolen two villager boats from Ban Sngao and disappeared into the Mekong River, approximately 1 kilometer from the incident site, likely fleeing to Laos.

Subdistrict Officer Suchin Chantpan, Pak Chom District Chief, Police Captain Thanusilp Maronee (Pak Chom Station Commander), and Army Captain Thanongsuk Sitongsud (Commander of Ranger Company 2109) inspected the three black packages and found them to be fertilizer sacks wrapped in plastic sealed with tape. Inside, they discovered methamphetamine tablets—pink pills stamped with "999" and the letter "Y"—totaling approximately 1,080,000 pills. The evidence was seized and submitted to Pak Chom Police Station for further investigation and the apprehension of the drug trafficking network involved in this operation.

Special Report – Train-Bus Collision Tragedy Exposes Systemic Rail Crisis and Traffic Enforcement Failure

A train-bus collision at a Bangkok railway crossing killed 8 people and injured 32, with investigations revealing the train operator tested positive for drugs and lacked proper certification, prompting authorities to announce compensation m

6h ago Khaosod

A tragic collision between a train and an air-conditioned bus on Route 206 at the Makkasan railway crossing on Asoke-Din Daeng Road killed 8 people and injured 32 others, raising serious concerns about Thailand's transportation safety systems. Preliminary police investigations revealed multiple contributing factors: the train operator was unfit for duty, testing positive for cannabis and methamphetamine, and lacked proper certification under the 2568 Rail Transport Act due to transitional legal enforcement issues; signal operators neglected safety protocols; and the bus driver carelessly parked across the railway tracks. All responsible parties face negligence charges resulting in injury and death.

Following the tragedy, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed condolences and ordered Thai Railways and Bangkok Mass Transit Authority to urgently care for and compensate the injured and families of the deceased. He assigned the Transport Ministry to study solutions for the dangerous railway crossing, recommending tunnels or overpasses to enhance safety.

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn announced relief measures providing 2.39 million baht for deceased victims' families. The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority will cover medical treatment costs ranging from 80,000 to 1 million baht, supplemented by 30,000 baht from partner networks and 20,000 baht from accident funds. Thai Railways provides initial aid of 5,000 baht with additional compensation up to 50,000 baht for ICU patients based on injury severity.

Authorities are studying the relocation of railway cargo and passenger transfer points outside Bangkok with three-month completion deadline. Transport Minister Assistant Siripong Angsukulkiatti ordered three-phase remedies: short-term human error reduction through stricter drug testing of train operators and daytime freight restrictions; medium-term technology deployment for safety monitoring and increased personnel at risk areas; and long-term infrastructure development proposals.

Salute! Chinese Influencer Builds Flying Sword Aircraft That Actually Flies, Like Something Out of Martial Arts Films

A Chinese influencer from Sichuan has built a functional sword-shaped aircraft that he pilots while striking martial arts poses, drawing over 3.3 million views by bringing fantasy xianxia novels to life with working technology.

7h ago Khaosod

Innovation never stops! A Chinese influencer has created a spectacular sword-shaped aircraft that actually flies, seemingly lifted straight from an internal martial arts fantasy series, creating a sensation across global social media.

A Chinese influencer has sparked online buzz after turning the "flying sword" from fantasy xianxia novels into reality by developing a functional sword-shaped aircraft.

The man is Fan Sishan from Sichuan Province in southwestern China. He posted videos of himself sitting on a sword-shaped drone while striking cool martial arts poses from fantasy worlds, which went viral with over 3.3 million views and more than 284,000 likes.

In the videos, Fan appears in black clothing, creating an image resembling knights from Chinese xianxia series, blending fantasy and supernatural elements perfectly, making viewers feel like scenes had escaped from novels.

Xianxia is a popular Chinese fantasy series genre that evolved from internal martial arts (wuxia) but adds supernatural elements such as gods, magical powers, cultivation, and immortality, differing from wuxia which remains bound by real-world physics.

One influential work in this genre is the 2005 series "Immortal Sword Quest" (Xian Jian Qi Xia Zhuan), adapted from a Taiwanese RPG game and starring famous actors like Hu Ge and Liu Yifei, which inspired many new-generation fans.

Fan, born in the 1990s, revealed he grew up watching internal martial arts and xianxia series, particularly "Jade Blood Sword" which made him obsessed with sword arts since childhood.

His journey began as a hotel employee before transitioning to content creation in 2020 when his company encouraged employees to become influencers during COVID-19. He started producing content about swords and combat.

Fan later developed increasingly innovative ideas using physics and chemistry knowledge to create special effects like fire swords, ice swords, and "summoning lightning" scenes without relying on CGI.

Previously, Fan created a major project called "The Return of Ten Thousand Swords" before expanding that concept into developing the current sword-shaped drone.

However, because the sword shape isn't a standard aircraft design, the team spent considerable time solving balance problems and adjusting thrust and control systems so the rider could maintain stability in mid-air.

From the original prototype that could only hover for about 10 seconds, Fan's "flying sword" can now fly for up to 3 minutes at approximately 2 meters above ground—a significant achievement after more than 18 months of failed experiments.

Although the project remains experimental and not ready for commercial production, it has become one of the viral projects that remarkably blends xianxia imagination with modern technology.
