Arsenal has announced the signing of French goalkeeper Illan Meslier on a free transfer. The player has agreed to a two-year contract with an option to extend for an additional year.

The English Premier League club Arsenal has unveiled Illan Meslier, a French goalkeeper, as their new player, signing him to a two-year deal with a future one-year extension option.

Meslier previously played for Leeds United in the Premier League and became a free agent when his contract expired at the end of the recent season, enabling the goalkeeper to join Arsenal without a transfer fee.

Currently, Arsenal has David Raya as their first-choice goalkeeper. Meslier is likely to compete withGepa Arrizabalaga for the backup goalkeeper position, though there remains a possibility that Arrizabalaga could also depart the club.

4h ago Khaosod

FIFA has announced a two-match suspension for Jarrell Quansah, England's defender, following his red card in the Round of 16 match where England defeated co-hosts Mexico 3-2 on July 5.

The English Football Association (FA) had previously explored various options to appeal Quansah's suspension, especially given that US forward Folarin Balogun's ban was earlier suspended.

However, FIFA's disciplinary committee has now issued a statement: "FIFA's disciplinary committee has sanctioned Jarrell Quansah, England national team player, with a two-match suspension effective from the team's next fixture in the 2026 FIFA World Cup."

As a result of this penalty, Quansah will be unable to play for England in the quarterfinal against Norway on July 11 and will also miss the semifinal should England advance to that stage.

New York City Mayor Sohran Mamdani discussed a project to improve residents' quality of life while also expressing support for Egypt's claim that the nation was cheated in the 2026 World Cup.

In the Round of 16 match, Egypt led defending champion Argentina 2-0, but Argentina scored twice in the final moments to win 3-2. The result sparked considerable controversy, with many Egyptians viewing the loss as unjust.

Speaking with the public about a new transit improvement initiative, Mamdani said: "Within six months from now, you'll spend 24 fewer hours on public transportation. Within one year, you'll save more than two days of commute time. That means eating breakfast with your family. That means talking about baseball and your kids' games. That means getting home in time for bed. That means agreeing with your friends that Egypt was robbed. And most importantly, it means returning time to New Yorkers."

The initiative aims to save New Yorkers at least six minutes of commute time daily. Mamdani quipped: "With those extra six minutes, I'll probably just replay footage of Egypt getting cheated over and over. You know, just pull up the VAR footage."

Police received a report at 20:37 on July 9, 2025, that two fishermen had been swept from their boat and were missing approximately 5 nautical miles offshore in Phetchaburi's Ban Laem district. A water rescue team from the Sawaeng Sappaya Tham Foundation was deployed. When rescuers arrived at Khlong Ee-ed pier, they found that family members had already launched a larger fishing vessel to help. The rescue team transferred the injured woman, 49, to shore and transported her to Ban Laem Hospital. Her husband, also 49, remained missing.

The couple had set out that morning at 3 a.m. to fish. By afternoon, when they hadn't returned, relatives set out searching and found their boat adrift with the wife clinging to a buoy in distress. According to the wife's account, she fell overboard and her husband jumped in to help, giving her the buoy before swimming back toward their drifting boat. Due to severe waves and wind, he was swept away and disappeared underwater.

Rescue teams from the Sawaeng Sappaya Tham Foundation suspended underwater and diving search operations at 22:45 due to dangerous conditions, high waves, and darkness that posed risks to personnel. Search efforts are planned to resume the following day.

A fire at a shoe factory in Jinjiang, Fujian Province in southeastern China killed at least 28 people on Thursday, July 9, according to state media. Hundreds of firefighters responded to the blaze at the Huiyideng Company facility in what is known as China's "shoe capital," responsible for about 20 percent of global athletic shoe production. More than 200 workers were evacuated, though injury figures remain unclear. President Xi Jinping stated those responsible will face strict punishment. Officials believe the fire may have started in a lower floor storage area for flammable materials. Dramatic images and videos circulating online showed people trapped on rooftops amid heavy black smoke and intense flames. This incident comes as China intensifies fire safety campaigns in tall buildings following a November 2024 apartment complex fire in Hong Kong's Tai Po district that killed 168 people.

Khlong San District has issued a temporary ban on entering and using buildings adjacent to the water seepage point that penetrated the southern purple-line BTS tunnel, lasting until further notice. The district is urgently securing temporary accommodations for affected residents.

The water leak occurred on July 8 in the BTS tunnel construction zone between Tao Pun and Rat Burana stations near the Wangwien intersection, causing structural damage to the tunnel and nearby buildings, as well as Bangkok property loss. Authorities evacuated residents from the affected area and launched investigations into the cause.

On July 9, Khlong San District Office posted an official notice stating: "Khlong San District Office announcement requesting cooperation to prohibit entry and use of buildings." To ensure public safety, Khlong San District Office has issued a notice prohibiting entry and use of the buildings under the Building Control Act B.E. 2522 and its amendments through B.E. 2558, as well as Bangkok ordinances on building control B.E. 2544, effective until further notice.

Khlong San District has coordinated with the Mass Transit System to arrange temporary housing. Affected residents can contact the coordination office near the King Taksin the Great Monument at 0 2437 5354 ext. 5064-5065 or fax 0 2439 6393.

6h ago Khaosod

Police arrested a 40-year-old woman at Suvarnabhumi Airport on July 9, 2569, as she returned from Dubai where she had been evading arrest in a call center fraud case. Officers led by Lieutenant Colonel Tasaphumi Charupratya, commander of the Police Technology Crime Investigation Bureau, detained the suspect at the international arrivals hall on level 2 of the airport. She was wanted under court warrant number 1396/2567 issued on October 18, 2567, by the Minburi Criminal Court.

The arrest stemmed from the suspect's involvement in providing a bank account to a call center gang. She had fled to Dubai since early 2567 after authorities learned she was returning to Thailand. Police coordinated with the airport immigration division and Kokkram police station to apprehend her upon arrival.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed that in 2567, a coworker from the massage parlor where she worked persuaded her to open an online bank account, claiming it was for work purposes. She was promised 1,000 baht monthly compensation. Within three months of opening the account, it was frozen and she never received further payment. She subsequently left Thailand to work at a massage parlor in Dubai.

Authorities charged her with fraud by impersonation, defrauding the public, computer fraud involving false data entry, unlawful account usage, and money laundering conspiracy. Additional arrest warrants from Phrae and Sakon Nakhon provincial courts were issued for related charges. Police will pursue further legal action and asset seizure.

6h ago Khaosod

Private sector representatives in Hat Yai are requesting a visit from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to inspect Royal Canal 1 (Klong Phumirat Damnoen) in Had Yai district, Songkhla province, which sustained significant damage from flooding. The canal's embankments have been severely eroded by floodwater currents. Deputy Permanent Secretary of Interior Paskorn Boonlaksana inspected the site on July 9 and directed relevant agencies and local government bodies to coordinate in preparing detailed information and facilitating a smooth visit for the Prime Minister to hear directly from affected residents and provide targeted solutions.

According to Pairoj Chaijirathikul, Vice President of the Songkhla Chamber of Commerce, the private sector had prepared damage assessments of Royal Canal 1 from the late 2568 flooding to present a budget proposal to the Prime Minister during a planned mobile cabinet meeting in Had Yai. However, the mobile cabinet meeting has been indefinitely postponed. With only three months remaining before the onset of the monsoon season, officials fear repairs cannot be completed in time. The Prime Minister is now scheduled to visit the damaged canal on July 10 to observe the damage firsthand. Estimated repair costs are between 100 and 200 million baht.
