Arsenal advanced to the UEFA Champions League final by narrowly defeating Atlético Madrid, with Bukayo Saka becoming the hero by scoring the winning goal in the 2025-26 Champions League semi-final second leg on May 5. Arsenal's Emirates Stadium hosted the Spanish side, after the first leg ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the 44th minute of the first half, Leandro Trossard received the ball on the left side of the penalty area, found space, and shot. The goalkeeper deflected the ball but couldn't clear it far, allowing Saka to rush in and finish into the net, giving Arsenal a 1-0 lead.
In the 51st minute of the second half, Arsenal's defense made a costly mistake, allowing Julián Simeoné to intercept the ball and slip past the goalkeeper. However, Gabriel Magalhães rushed back and made a crucial block just as Simeoné was about to shoot, denying Atlético Madrid an equalizer.
In the 56th minute, Marc Pubill advanced down the right flank and passed to Antoine Griezmann, who entered the right side of the penalty area and attempted a shot, but David Raya made a diving save to deny Atlético Madrid.
In the 66th minute, Arsenal nearly extended their lead when Piero Incarnato came on as a substitute and received the ball on the left before sending a low cross toward the center. Víktor Ojerkes took a shot that narrowly sailed over the crossbar. Arsenal finished the match with a 1-0 victory and a 2-1 aggregate score.
This Champions League final appearance marks only the second in Arsenal's history, following their last final in the 2005-06 season, 20 years ago. They will face the winner of the Paris Saint-Germain versus Bayern Munich semi-final. The final will be held at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest, Hungary on May 30.
