PM reveals compensation of 8 billion baht for wrongfully convicted since 2001, vows to close justice system gaps

The Prime Minister announced 8 billion baht in compensation paid to over 145,000 wrongfully convicted people since 2001, pledging to strengthen justice system safeguards to prevent future miscarriages of justice.

6 May Khaosod

On May 6, 2025, at 9:30 AM at Impact Forum in Muang Thonburi, Prime Minister Anupong Paojinda and Justice Minister presided over a national event titled "24 Years of Rapid, Comprehensive, and Fair Assistance to Innocent Victims: Justice Delayed is Justice Denied," attended by Justice Minister Rutpol Naowarat, Justice Permanent Secretary Pongswat Nilaiyotin, and international representatives.

The Prime Minister stated that any nation's stability must be built on justice and rule of law, emphasizing the government's commitment to protecting innocent people caught in the judicial system, whether as victims, accused, or defendants. Protection extends equally to all groups, including foreign nationals in Thailand, based on human dignity and universal human rights principles.

The government adheres to rule of law principles ensuring equal application of laws, protecting rights and freedoms in democracy, fair law enforcement, and legal reforms to reduce unnecessary obstacles. Modern information technology systems are being implemented to improve government efficiency and public services.

Innocent people involved in criminal cases may face violations, injuries, reputation damage, loss of freedom, and even death, causing severe life impact for them and their families. The Prime Minister stated this is a serious matter requiring government intervention to protect innocent people's rights, establish safety policies, and close justice system gaps to prevent wrongful convictions.

Since the 2001 Victim and Defendant Compensation Act, the government has assisted over 145,000 innocent victims with approximately 8 billion baht in compensation, plus over 1,000 foreign nationals receiving 47 million baht. The PM emphasized this reflects not success but shame—that the justice system fails to convict actual offenders while punishing innocent people who suffer legal battles and hardship.

Liverpool has confirmed that Cody Gakpo will not be sold in the upcoming summer transfer market, with the club valuing his versatility across multiple attacking positions. The Dutch forward has become essential to Liverpool's attack this season due to injuries and departures of other key players, though he has faced criticism for his goal-scoring output with 9 goals in 49 appearances.

6 May Khaosod

While the 26-year-old was linked with Bayern Munich during last summer's transfer window, that move never came to fruition.

According to Telegraph reporter Dominic King, Gakpo is a player Liverpool will certainly not let go during this summer's transfer market. The versatile forward will cover for Mohamed Salah's potential departure and Diogo Jota's extended absence throughout the year.

"There are questions that need answering, and it may be asking too much of Alexander Isak to play 60 consecutive matches. Cody Gakpo will not be allowed to leave, as he can play multiple attacking positions. But who else will score the goals?" King stated.

Gakpo has faced criticism for his performance this season, with statistics showing just 9 goals and 6 assists from 49 appearances across all competitions.

Heartbroken Mother: 15-Year-Old Son Just Got College Acceptance, Now Loses Leg in Pickup Truck Crash

A 15-year-old boy who just earned college admission lost his right leg in a high-speed sedan crash in Songkhla Province on May 1st, shattering his dreams of attending technical college and working his way through school.

6 May Khaosod

On May 5th, 2569, 47-year-old Ms. Punya reported that her 15-year-old son, Bhumi, and five friends were hit by a sedan traveling at high speed while riding a motorcycle with a sidecar to cut grass for cattle. The collision left Bhumi with severe injuries requiring amputation of his right leg, while another friend suffered a broken leg. The accident occurred on Lopburi Ramesuan Road heading into Hat Yai in Bang Klam District, Songkhla Province, on the evening of May 1st.

Ms. Punya tearfully explained that her son had just received his quota for admission to Haad Yai Technical College, a source of family pride. Bhumi had told his mother, "I've made your dream come true," and planned to work part-time to help pay his tuition. Just days before the accident, he had even prepared a work shirt to show his mother.

On the day of the incident, as the five teenagers rode the motorcycle sidecar to cut grass, a sedan traveling at high speed struck them from behind with tremendous force. Ms. Punya described the horrific scene: "The first image I saw was my son lying on the road, his right leg broken and twisted forward, bleeding heavily. I went into shock. I could only think one thing: will my son be able to go to college? All his dreams ended right there."

Doctors had to amputate Bhumi's right leg due to a complete rupture of the main artery. When he regained consciousness and realized his leg was gone, he could only point and communicate his devastation.

Yothin Songdech, owner of a nearby auto repair shop, revealed CCTV footage showing the sedan traveling at an estimated speed of at least 150 km/h. The impact severed the motorcycle sidecar in two places, and the sedan veered off course, colliding with five customer vehicles parked in front of the shop before plunging into a drainage ditch.

Ms. Punya disclosed that the driver, 24-year-old Mr. Wad, showed no remorse or apology when he visited Bhumi in the hospital, deepening her concerns about whether justice will be served.

Shock as Conveyor Belt Stops: Sukhi Jinda Nakhon Ratchasima Announces Closure

Popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant Sukhi Jinda closes its Nakhon Ratchasima branch after 2.5 years, citing expired contract and declining consumer spending in the economically struggling province.

6 May Khaosod

On May 6, 2025, it was reported that Sukhi Jinda, a nationally-famous conveyor belt suki restaurant with a branch located in front of Klang Plaza (Klang Mai) on Chom Surangyard Road in Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima, has officially announced its closure. The announcement shocked food enthusiasts in the province and sparked considerable criticism. The restaurant's Facebook page posted a message to customers stating: "The restaurant will be open on May 4, 2025 as the final day and will cease service from May 5, 2025 onwards. The brief reason given is that the contract term has expired, and the restaurant expressed thanks to customers for their continued support and patronage."

A reporter visited the location on May 5, the first day of closure, and found the atmosphere desolate and melancholy. The restaurant doors were tightly shut with no trace of staff or customers who once queued densely during its opening period. Looking through the glass, the reporter observed that equipment such as tables, chairs, and the restaurant's signature golden suki pots remained in place, but this eerie silence reflected rapid changes occurring in the area. Reports indicate the restaurant is preparing to move all equipment out of the location shortly.

Looking back at local media records, Sukhi Jinda's Nakhon Ratchasima branch officially opened on September 9, 2022, and was hailed as a phenomenon that significantly boosted the city's economy. It was predicted to become a new dining landmark that would draw crowds to the city center. However, in recent times, Nakhon Ratchasima's economic conditions have clearly shown signs of decline, with consumer purchasing power dropping continuously.

This has directly impacted restaurant businesses. Combined with changing consumer behavior, the number of customers visiting has dropped alarmingly, resulting in the restaurant facing accumulated losses. From its grand opening on September 9, 2022, to its final day of service on April 4, 2025, and official closure on May 5, 2025, Sukhi Jinda's Klang Mai branch operated for approximately 2 years and 7 months.

This development serves as an important economic indicator for Nakhon Ratchasima Province, demonstrating that even a nationally-renowned restaurant brand cannot withstand the shifting economic winds and the current economic slowdown. The closure of this Sukhi Jinda branch is not merely the shutdown of one restaurant, but a red-alert warning signal to other business operators in the area that they must urgently adapt and tighten their belts amid a purchasing power crisis with no signs of near-term recovery.
