Thailand Intensifies Screening of Travelers from Congo and Uganda Over Ebola Outbreak

Thailand has designated Congo and Uganda as dangerous disease zones for Ebola and strengthened screening of all travelers from these countries at airports and border checkpoints, including temperature checks and 21-day health monitoring upo

18h ago Khaosod

Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Permsuwativat announced on May 22 that the Ministry of Public Health has published an official proclamation designating the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda as dangerous communicable disease zones for Ebola Virus Disease, effective May 21, 2025 onwards. This action aligns with the World Health Organization's classification of the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following reports of numerous infections and deaths with potential for international spread.

Lalida stated that the government has instructed relevant agencies to escalate surveillance and monitoring measures to assure the public of health security. The Department of Disease Control has strengthened screening procedures for travelers from high-risk countries at all international entry and exit points.

Travelers from outbreak areas must pre-register through the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) system for foreigners and the Thai Health Pass system at https://thaihealthpass.com for Thai nationals, and undergo health screening including temperature checks, symptom assessment, and medical history review. They will be monitored for 21 days following arrival.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has coordinated with the Ministry of Public Health, airlines, and relevant agencies to enhance aviation health measures through three key initiatives: public health communication to passengers before travel, passenger screening at departure, and verification of registration data and symptom assessment to support disease control officials in tracking and monitoring.

Relevant agencies have also conducted emergency response drills for suspected cases, both those detected on aircraft and those showing symptoms after entering the country, to ensure rapid and efficient crisis management. "The government confirms the readiness of Thailand's health system to monitor, prevent, and control dangerous infectious diseases through close inter-agency coordination to ensure public safety and confidence," Lalida stated, urging the public to follow official government health guidance without panic.

AMATA Posts 1.379 Billion Baht Profit, Accumulates 19.7 Billion Baht Backlog Amid Data Center Boom

AMATA Corporation reported first-quarter profit of 1.379 billion baht, up 67 percent, driven by strong industrial land sales as companies relocate manufacturing to Thailand amid global geopolitical shifts. The company's order backlog reache

18h ago Khaosod

AMATA Corporation's Chief Financial Officer Daendao Gomalmesat announced first-quarter 2025 results showing total revenue of 3.996 billion baht, up 18 percent, with net profit reaching 1.379 billion baht, up 67 percent year-on-year. The strong performance was driven by favorable factors including investment base relocation due to global geopolitical issues, resulting in increased land transfer revenue of 306 rai compared to 279 rai, bringing real estate business revenue to 2.486 billion baht, a 30 percent increase.

This reflects recovery and continued expansion in industrial estate investment and foreign direct investment (FDI). Gross profit margins for core business improved to 47 percent from 44 percent, thanks to cost efficiency initiatives for property development both domestically and internationally. Current investment flows show sustained strong demand for industrial estate land, particularly from technology, electronics, data center, and clean energy sectors.

The company's pending sales (backlog) valued at 19.704 billion baht will be gradually recognized as revenue supporting future growth. AMATA maintains financial discipline with a debt-to-equity ratio of 1.25 times. Utilities services revenue totaled 1.201 billion baht, up 2 percent, while ready-built factory (RBF) rental business generated 258 million baht, up 5 percent, with 469,890 square meters of space. Share of profit from associates and joint ventures declined 34 percent to 152 million baht.

Yasuo Suzui, Chief Executive of the Thai real estate business division, noted that the 2025 industrial estate market continues to benefit from FDI flows and production base relocation to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Vietnam, which remain critical manufacturing hubs for technology, electronics, data centers, and clean energy. Despite global economic volatility from geopolitical tensions and trade pressures, Thailand maintains structural advantages in infrastructure, supply chains, and capacity to support new industries, continuing to attract foreign investors from China, Japan, Singapore, and Europe. The company is expanding international investments, particularly in Vietnam with high growth potential, recently establishing Amata City Phu Tho Joint Stock Company.

"Opening the door to change is better than confrontation," said Lieutenant Colonel Ekwattid Chobchoob Phon, deputy spokesperson for the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Front, revealing the law enforcement timeline in the case of Ismaae, wanted on four security-related arrest warrants, who decided to surrender to authorities to enter the justice system through peaceful means.

The sequence of events began at 4:25 p.m. when officials were informed of a suspect hiding in a rented house on Soi 14, behind Municipal School 5.

At 7:20 p.m., officers cordoned off the area and coordinated with community leaders and local administrators to facilitate understanding and discussion.

At 8:45 p.m., officials began negotiation efforts, requesting the suspect's cooperation for the safety of all parties involved.

By 9:06 p.m., the suspect's wife emerged and presented herself to authorities. At 9:33 p.m., Ismaae decided to surrender following successful peaceful negotiations.

Throughout the operation, security agencies operated under the principles of "negotiation, building understanding, and providing an opportunity to re-enter the justice system" while carefully enforcing the law, upholding human rights principles, and prioritizing everyone's safety, ultimately resulting in Ismaae's voluntary surrender.

The deputy spokesperson thanked all sectors including religious leaders, local administrators, the public, and security personnel for their continuous cooperation in using peaceful methods and dialogue, successfully restoring the fugitive's confidence in the justice system.

This reflects that "creating spaces of understanding" remains an important approach to resolving situations in Thailand's southern border provinces.

Officials reaffirmed their readiness to ensure fairness for all who decide to surrender and enter the legal process, adhering to principles of justice, transparency, and peaceful resolution to build sustainable peace in the southern border region.

The Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Front requests public cooperation. Anyone with information or suspicious individuals in the area can contact the command's hotline at 1341 or local task force units 24/7.

Additionally, those who assist wrongdoers through various means such as harboring, providing shelter, or supplying food will face criminal charges under the Criminal Code Section 189, punishable by imprisonment not exceeding 2 years, a fine not exceeding 40,000 baht, or both.

In the interest of fairness, media personality Matoom Techin has apologized to actor Kim Soo Hyun following Korean media reports that prosecutors have requested an arrest warrant for a YouTuber who used AI-generated voice to create false rumors. Police investigation confirmed that actor Kim Sae Rin's voice was artificially manipulated using AI technology, and photographs were verified to have been taken when Kim Sae Rin had already reached legal age. Prosecutors found evidence of fabrication and filed for an arrest warrant against the content creator.

"Matoom is one of the media outlets that previously hosted a radio program and reported on Kim Soo Hyun's news at a time when there was no positive confirmation from news agencies," the statement read. "I admit I felt very sorry as a fan, but now that the court has made its decision in this direction, I want to use this space to share this news for justice for Kim Soo Hyun and sincerely apologize. I apologize for rushing to judgment without waiting for further investigation and witness testimony (at that time, the media and global trends went negative)."

"Personally, I don't know how this case will end, but if Kim Soo Hyun confirms his innocence and takes full responsibility for his own wrongdoings, then I believe he deserves justice."

*Editor's note: The court has not yet made a final verdict. Matoom used ambiguous language and apologizes for that. There are only updated reports according to the original news. The case is still ongoing.

Government Urges Parliament to Pass New Facilitation Law for Easier Public Permits

Thailand's parliament passed a new facilitation law to streamline public permits by eliminating redundant document requests and introducing a "Super License" system that automatically grants secondary licenses to businesses, reducing bureau

19h ago Khaosod

Government spokesperson emphasizes Parliament's passage of new facilitation bill to streamline public permit applications, eliminate duplicate document requests, and integrate Super License system to reduce procedural steps and costs for businesses. May 22, 2025 – Government spokesman Ratchada Thanadirek revealed that the government is advancing legislation and regulations to facilitate services and permits for citizens and entrepreneurs from state agencies. Most recently, on May 20, 2025, the House of Representatives passed a new Bill on Facilitation of Permit Consideration and Public Services, with the next steps being royal endorsement and enforcement. This law will reduce the burden of state interactions, accelerate services, enhance transparency and accountability, and align with government policies on responsive administration and legal reform, ensuring citizens and businesses understand procedures, timelines, documents, and fees clearly. The law will eliminate redundant document requests when information already exists in state databases or can be linked through central systems, meaning citizens won't need to resubmit documents. Ratchada emphasized that importantly, the law enables the use of a primary permit or Super License system for businesses requiring permits from multiple agencies. Once a primary license is obtained, related secondary licenses are automatically granted under specified conditions, eliminating the need for entrepreneurs to submit documents to numerous agencies repeatedly. This approach represents part of broader civil service reform to support genuine business operations, reduce costs, minimize waiting times, and reduce unnecessary discretionary decisions, while raising public sector standards and supporting Thailand's goal of OECD membership. Additionally, the government is advancing parallel legislation and data integration systems, having approved a draft royal decree on disclosure of personal data among state agencies on May 5 to enable efficient information sharing between state agencies. "The government is not piecemeal in updating laws, but systematically reforming interconnected legislation to make state agencies more efficient, public services more accessible, and business operations faster, which directly impacts the economy, investment, and employment opportunities," Ratchada stated.

Record 274 Climbers Summit Mount Everest in Single Day from Nepal Side, Breaking All-Time Record

A record 274 climbers summited Mount Everest on May 20 from the Nepal side, breaking the previous single-day record of 223 climbers set in 2019.

19h ago Khaosod

Nepal revealed that 274 climbers successfully summited Mount Everest on May 20, a record number representing the highest count of people to reach the world's highest peak in a single day from the Nepali side. Tour operators confirmed there were no climbers on the Tibetan side this year as Chinese authorities had not issued any permits. Rishi Bhandari, secretary general of Nepal's Expedition Operators Association, stated this exceeds the previous record of 223 climbers on May 22, 2019, and noted the final figure could increase as some successful summiteers may not yet have reported their achievements to base camp. Nepal issued 492 permits for Everest climbing during this spring season, with each climber required to pay up to $15,000 (approximately 489,900 baht). The fee increase reflects stricter control measures implemented after Nepal faced issues with overcrowding on Everest, which has frequently led to congested, delayed, and life-threatening climbs.

19h ago Khaosod

On May 22, 2569, authorities reported progress in the investigation into the shooting of Phra Athikan Bunlert Akpunyo, 64, the abbot of Wat Krajeom Thong in Muang District, Kamphaengphet Province. He sustained serious injuries while standing in his monk's quarters. Muang Kamphaengphet police continue to gather evidence to identify the perpetrator. Gunpowder residue tests were conducted on 12 close associates, with initial results from 9 individuals (6 monks and 3 lay people) showing no traces of gunpowder residue on their bodies or clothing. Three additional individuals await forensic results, including two suspects whose names are being withheld. Police confirmed that footprints discovered in the cassava field behind the temple represent a crucial lead, with approximately 10 distinct prints heading toward the Ping River area—a potential escape route. The footprints show clear sock impressions with a pattern suggesting the person paused mid-stride before continuing. The abbot subsequently spoke with reporters while recovering at a relative's home. He stated that the attack likely has nothing to do with money lending, as he has only loaned small amounts that have been repaid or are being repaid regularly. He expressed doubt about suspicions surrounding Phloen, as that individual has not frequented the temple recently and they maintain normal relations. Regarding the shooting itself, the abbot recalled that he was eating instant noodles when someone suddenly opened his door and fired. He could not identify the shooter as he did not recognize them. As for his relationship with the lay devotee Lamyai, the abbot confirmed they have been close for approximately ten years.
