Municipal officers from Rawai Subdistrict Municipality in Phuket arrested a 21-year-old Thai man on May 21, 2025, after catching him collecting unauthorized fees from tourists at the "Phromthep Cape" stairway, one of the province's most famous sunset viewpoints. He claimed the 100-baht charge per person was a legitimate passage fee for those wishing to descend to the lower viewpoint. The incident occurred at Phromthep Cape in Rawai Subdistrict, Muang District, Phuket, following tourist complaints about being charged by an unauthorized individual in what is a public area with no official fee collection. After receiving the report, Rawai Subdistrict Municipality officers visited the site and conducted surveillance until they spotted the suspect collecting money from tourists. They arrested him while he was actively collecting fees from a visitor. The suspect is now in custody and the case has been forwarded to investigators for legal prosecution. Authorities are cautioning all tourists, both Thai and foreign, to immediately report any suspicious or unauthorized fee-collection attempts to local officials to prevent losses and protect Phuket's tourism reputation.
