1d ago Khaosod

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) and Chulalongkorn University are jointly researching and developing navigation innovation to assist visually impaired individuals and promote equal access to public transportation services.

MRTA Governor Kajpol Udoathammabuddhi revealed that the organization prioritizes developing creative innovations and adopting modern technology in its operations to increase efficiency, elevate service quality, and enhance public service standards. The work is carried out through academic collaborations with educational institutions and partner organizations, including Chulalongkorn University.

The academic partnership between MRTA and Chulalongkorn University has resulted in the "MRTA Wayfinder" project, designed to research and develop innovations that promote equal access to public transportation based on Universal Design principles for all people.

The project employs Beacon technology, a small low-energy Bluetooth device (BLE), as an indoor navigation system within BTS stations where conventional systems fall short.

These devices are installed as a network throughout the stations, transmitting low-energy signals that send real-time location data to users' smartphone applications. The data is converted into voice guidance providing specific distance and direction information, allowing users to accurately determine their location and direction in enclosed areas such as platform elevators, ticket purchase floors, retail areas, and station corridors.

Research teams from Chulalongkorn University conducted field surveys and sensor signal measurements within the Bangkok Metro Blue Line system at Samyan Station to gather data for developing the innovation and creating a prototype for future real-world implementation.

The initiative aims to provide convenience and safety for visually impaired travelers, building their confidence in using the service and ensuring that all people have equal access to public transportation.

The MRTA remains committed to improving service quality by incorporating efficient innovations and technology while actively seeking feedback from all user groups to enhance and upgrade the Bangkok Metro system's effectiveness.

Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Welcomes Law and Political Science Students from Hat Yai College, Emphasizes Role of Local Administrators

The Interior Ministry's Permanent Secretary hosted Law and Political Science students from Hat Yai College on May 18, 2026, explaining how the ministry's civil servants work across central, regional, and local administrative levels to serve

1d ago Khaosod

On May 18, 2026, at the Interior Ministry, Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul assigned Arissada Somphanratana, Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, to welcome and deliver a special lecture titled "Interior Ministry's Mission in Alleviating Suffering and Promoting Prosperity" to students and faculty of the Law and Political Science Special Classroom Program at Hat Yai College, Songkhla Province. The event was attended by Chotinrin Kerdsohm, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Administration; Athaya Nuan-uthai, Assistant Permanent Secretary; Chakraphan Ratansetheir, Director of the Institute of Royal Patronage; and officials from the office of the Permanent Secretary, who guided visitors through significant locations and artifacts related to the Interior Ministry's 134th anniversary at Sirindhara Park and the Museum of Royal Patronage, the Interior Ministry Hall, which houses an image of Princess Royal Damrong Rajanubhap, the first Minister of Interior, and displays exhibitions of her biography, works, books, and personal belongings, along with tributes to the Royal Institution.

Permanent Secretary Arissada stated that the Interior Ministry was pleased to welcome the Hat Yai College students, a group interested in studying political science and law, representing the new generation interested in pursuing higher education in these fields, who may become Interior Ministry civil servants in various positions including policy analysts, human resources specialists, general administrators, public relations officers, district chiefs, development workers, land scholars, and legal officers, working in both public sector and private organizations.

Arissada explained that while the Interior Ministry is one of 20 ministries, it is the only one with a comprehensive administrative system covering: 1) the central level—the ministry and departments; 2) the regional level—provinces and districts; and 3) the local level—provincial administrative organizations (PAO), municipalities, subdistrict administrative organizations (SAO), Pattaya City, and Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). The Interior Ministry is the government agency responsible for administering all affairs, serving as the heart of regional administration and oversight of local government organizations.

The ministry's civil servants serve as the highest commander of provincial officials—the "Provincial Governor"—holding the position of "local administrator" with the duty to "protect and safeguard the public," a critical function and core mission of the Interior Ministry. At the district level is the "District Chief," under the provincial governor's leadership. District Chiefs, as Interior Ministry civil servants, work with local leaders including village headmen and subvillage leaders who assist in caring for communities and villages. Local government organizations with legal status—PAOs, municipalities, and SAOs—operate under the supervision of their elected leaders, guided by the principle of "alleviating suffering and promoting prosperity," diligently working in communities with the approach that "shoes wear out before pants tear," engaging the public with knowledge, love, and unity, and working with understanding, accessibility, and development.

Paladej Says Government Can Proceed with 400 Billion Baht Loan as Court Issues No Halt Order, Assures No Impact on 'Thai Helping Thai' Registration

1d ago Khaosod

At 4:05 p.m. on May 18, 2025, at Government House, Prime Minister's Office Minister Paladej Panichanantkul addressed the Constitutional Court's decision to accept a petition reviewing whether a royal decree authorizing the Finance Ministry to borrow funds to address energy crisis impacts and facilitate the country's energy transition violates the Constitution. Paladej clarified that the court has accepted the case for consideration and requested the Finance Ministry provide clarifications within seven days, but crucially issued no suspension order. This means all borrowing processes and committee proceedings can continue uninterrupted. When asked if the government might voluntarily pause operations despite the court's lack of a halt order, Paladej emphasized that since the court did not issue one, the Cabinet—which issued the decree—retains the authority to proceed. The government will submit its clarifications within the seven-day timeframe. Regarding the 'Thai Helping Thai' program registration scheduled for May 25, Paladej confirmed that the government will move forward with the planned launch date as scheduled.

Suriya Orders Crackdown on Smuggled Agricultural Products; 180,000 Smuggled Chicken Eggs Worth 2 Million Baht Seized

Agriculture Minister Suriya has ordered a crackdown on smuggled farm products after authorities seized 180,000 contraband chicken eggs worth 2 million baht at a checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The operation targets illegal agric

1d ago Khaosod

Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Suruthap Nuengchamnuea revealed that Agriculture Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has assigned him to accelerate the implementation of policies to prevent and suppress the smuggling of all types of illegal agricultural products through strict law enforcement. This initiative addresses concerns about food safety for consumers, the spread of animal diseases and crop pests into the country, and ensuring fair market treatment for domestic farmers.

According to the latest report from Dr. Somchuan Rattanmangklanon, Director-General of the Department of Livestock, the Special Task Force of Animal Quarantine Station Group 8—comprising checkpoints in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Phetchaburi—jointly set up an interception operation. At approximately 11:30 PM on May 16, officers spotted a 12-wheel covered truck at the Ban Noen Din Daeng intersection in Huai Yang Subdistrict, Thap Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Upon inspection, they discovered 180,000 chicken eggs packed in cardboard boxes.

The truck driver could not produce transportation documents or proof of the eggs' origin. He claimed he was hired to transport the eggs from Hat Yai District in Songkhla Province and would receive delivery point instructions upon arrival at the destination.

Livestock quarantine officers seized 180,000 chicken eggs and one 12-wheel truck as evidence. The suspect was handed over to officers at Huai Yang Police Station for prosecution under the Animal Disease Act of 2015.

Samples of the seized eggs were sent to the Western Region Veterinary Research and Development Center laboratory in Ratchaburi for disease monitoring and additional safety testing. Authorities will expand the investigation to identify hatcheries cooperating with the suspect for enforcement under the Department of Livestock's strict hatchery standards.

Secretay Suruthap concluded by noting that citizens can report violations or provide tips regarding livestock law offenses through the DLD 4.0 mobile application, available 24/7.

Yossakon Pushes Major Expansion of Bangkok Planetarium, Linking Universities Nationwide to Create Free Learning Spaces for All Ages

Thailand's deputy prime minister launched an expanded planetarium initiative to create free learning spaces nationwide, linking universities and schools to offer lifelong education for all ages beyond traditional museum models.

1d ago Khaosod

On May 18, 2025, at the Center for the Promotion and Development of Science Learning, Deputy Prime Minister Yossakon Wongsuadsdi and ministers Prasert Jantharavongtong and Akkhananth Kanakittinanth jointly launched the "From Museum to Lifelong Learning Ecosystem Center" initiative and a working committee meeting to elevate Bangkok's planetarium into a model lifelong learning center.

Yossakon stated that transitioning from the traditional museum concept to a lifelong learning ecosystem represents a crucial milestone, emphasizing outcome-based education that empowers learners with potential and direction. This initiative requires collaboration across multiple sectors. The planetarium, which has long inspired millions of Thais, must foster youth to think boldly, take action, dream courageously, and crucially, believe their dreams are achievable—giving them the resilience to overcome obstacles.

In the context of rapidly changing technology, Yossakon explained that the planetarium's definition must evolve beyond a children's space to become an open area for workers, disadvantaged individuals, and those seeking career changes—a source of inspiration for starting new lives at any age. Given the large population, a single location is insufficient. Success depends on connecting with partner networks nationwide, including the National Astronomical Research Institute, school libraries, and private learning centers, to expand learning to provinces across the country. This collaboration will disseminate diverse knowledge across professions and link curricula to all educational levels—vocational education, basic education, and higher education—ensuring equal opportunities for youth in remote areas and providing hope for all.

1d ago Khaosod

SONGKHLA — Three Thai children who were allegedly taken to Malaysia by a monk to be ordained as novice monks and used for begging have returned safely to Thailand, authorities said.

The children, aged 5, 11 and 12, arrived back in Thailand after a coordinated rescue effort involving several agencies, including Thailand's Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the Malaysian Embassy and the Pavena Hongsakul Foundation for Children and Women.

Parents wept and embraced the children upon their return.

Four other Thai children aged between 13 and 15 remain temporarily in Malaysia to testify in court proceedings and are expected to return to Thailand in early June, officials said.

Pavena Hongsakul, president of the foundation, said the organisation received complaints about the case on 9 May and immediately submitted an urgent request to the Malaysian ambassador in Thailand seeking assistance to return the children.

The foundation also coordinated with Thailand's Department of Consular Affairs and officials responsible for protecting Thai nationals overseas to gather information and monitor efforts to assist all seven children.

Authorities from the Department of Children and Youth and social development officials in Songkhla province also joined the operation.

On 12 May, the Foreign Ministry informed the foundation that three children would return to Thailand that evening. Officials from Songkhla's social development office, the Southern Border Coordination Centre and immigration police received the children at the border checkpoint in Songkhla province at 20:45.

Officals said the children were suffering from fever and exhaustion and were taken for medical examinations and rest at a child protection shelter in Songkhla for two nights before being reunited with their families.

On 18 May, the children's parents travelled from Prachuap Khiri Khan and Ratchaburi provinces to thank the foundation, the Foreign Ministry, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security and the Malaysian Embassy for helping bring the children home safely.

Pavena said the foundation would continue coordinating psychological rehabilitation for the children alongside relevant agencies.

Cambodia brings ASEAN observers to inspect disputed Thai frontier

Cambodia hosted ASEAN observers to inspect a disputed border area with Thailand on Sunday, verifying compliance with a ceasefire agreement that took effect in December 2025.

1d ago Khaosod

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — 17 May 2026, A joint delegation of Cambodian officials and ASEAN observers carried out a monitoring mission along a contested section of the Thailand-Cambodia border on Sunday, according to a statement released by Cambodia's Ministry of National Defense.

Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Spokeswoman of the Ministry of National Defense of the Kingdom of Cambodia, said the Cambodian Liaison Group coordinated the site visit with the ASEAN Observer Team, led by the Philippines as Head of Mission, at 09:00 on Sunday. The delegation inspected the border area at Seila Khmer Village in O Bei Chon Commune, O Chrov District, Banteay Meanchey Province.

Phnom Penh maintains that the area has been continuously cultivated and administered by Cambodian citizens since an emergency ceasefire with Thailand took effect on 27 December 2025. The observers aimed to verify the border situation and evaluate compliance with stabilization measures outlined in the joint ceasefire agreement, which followed heightened tensions between the neighboring nations last year.

Cambodia strongly reiterated that formal survey and demarcation work remains the exclusive mandate of the bilateral Joint Boundary Commission and its Joint Survey Teams. The defense ministry explicitly rejected any unilateral alterations to the international boundary line, insisting that all border determinations must strictly adhere to historical framework agreements including the Franco-Siamese conventions and the MOU 2000.

Cambodian authorities firmly rejected any border changes resulting from historical or present use of force. Phnom Penh urged Bangkok to dispatch its survey teams back to the field to resume demarcation work and called for an immediate meeting of the Joint Boundary Commission.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to the Joint Declaration on the Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on 26 October 2025, as well as resolutions passed during the Third Special Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee on 27 December 2025, aimed at restoring long-lasting peace and stability along the frontier.

Business Development Department Acts on PM's Orders to Scan Tourist Areas, Crack Down on Foreign Nominees

Thai authorities are cracking down on foreign-controlled businesses in major tourist destinations, targeting Thai nationals acting as illegal nominees for foreign investors. The Department of Business Development identified thousands of sus

1d ago Khaosod

The Department of Business Development, working with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, is launching a comprehensive crackdown to dismantle nominee networks operating in tourist destinations and eliminate illegal business operations. A substantial number of Thai nationals have been implicated. Poonpong Nainapakarana, Director-General of the Department of Business Development at the Ministry of Commerce, announced that following a field operation in Koh Pangan District, Surat Thani Province on May 13, 2025, coordinated with the Prime Minister's office to combat the practice of Thais holding shares as nominees for foreigners, and led by General Samran Nualma, Deputy National Police Commissioner for Security and Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Illegal Immigration Center, multiple agencies have deployed enforcement operations to dismantle networks of foreigners illegally operating businesses in violation of Thai law. The Prime Minister assigned the Department of Business Development—the lead agency for company registration—to guide and coordinate other government agencies in carrying out their respective enforcement duties. Current data shows 3,754 registered companies on Koh Pangan with 2,381 involving foreign shareholders, 12,050 on Koh Samui with 8,213 foreign shareholders, 29,646 in Phuket with 11,626 foreign shareholders, 1,685 in Phang Nga with 346 foreign shareholders, 3,587 in Krabi with 749 foreign shareholders, 33,314 in Bang Lamung (Pattaya) with 19,910 foreign shareholders, 4,061 in Hua Hin with 2,081 foreign shareholders, and 139 in Pai with 50 foreign shareholders. The department will intensify checks on entities showing nominee characteristics, including companies where foreigners hold the highest share proportion as legally permitted but exercise signing authority binding the company. Cases involving Thai nationals appearing redundantly as shareholders or directors across multiple companies in an unusual pattern, potentially masking nominee arrangements or assisting foreigners in business as per the Foreign Business Act B.E. 2542, carry penalties of up to three years imprisonment and fines of 300,000 to 1,000,000 baht. The department will strengthen inter-agency cooperation to seriously combat nominee businesses, ensure fairness for Thai entrepreneurs, prevent disguised asset ownership, and maintain confidence in the country's economic and investment systems. As the originating agency for company registration, the department has implemented stricter registration procedures through orders effective January 1 and April 1, 2025, requiring applications involving foreign shareholders below 50 percent or foreign board members—high-risk nominee groups—to submit bank statements of Thai shareholders to verify genuine investment. Additionally, managers or directors signing registration applications must provide written confirmation that all partners and shareholders have made genuine investments, received no assistance or support from, nor engaged in nominee-style business with foreigners. Registration statistics following these orders show a reduction in high-risk business entity registrations.

Commerce Ministry Responds to USTR Allegations on Forced Labor and Overcapacity

Thailand defended its labor standards and production practices during technical talks with U.S. trade officials on May 13-14, denying forced labor in supply chains and rejecting overcapacity allegations in key industries.

1d ago Khaosod

Arada Fuengtong, director-general of the Department of Foreign Trade, revealed that Thailand participated in technical-level discussions with the USTR on May 13-14, 2025, represented by Deputy Minister Dr. Kirita Phaopitchit and officials from the Department of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thai Customs Department, and Board of Investment. The delegation addressed U.S. concerns regarding forced labor and excess capacity under a Section 301 investigation of the Trade Act of 1974.

Thailand emphasized that its supply chains are free from forced labor, with strict enforcement of labor laws and exports verified by U.S. buyers and international organizations as compliant with standards and free from exploitation. The country is developing a Human Rights Due Diligence law to enhance supply chain oversight. Both sides acknowledged the importance of close cooperation in preventing forced labor throughout supply chains.

Regarding overcapacity concerns, Thailand affirmed its commitment to free trade and market mechanisms, noting that production and investment decisions are made by the private sector based on market conditions. The government has no production targets but facilitates fair competition, and denies overcapacity in automobiles and parts, rubber products, and machinery and electronics. Thailand also pledged close collaboration with U.S. Customs to prevent goods misrepresentation and enhanced origin verification to ensure Thai exports meet U.S. standards.

"This discussion occurred in a constructive and friendly atmosphere," the statement noted. "Thailand and the United States share long-standing mutual trade interests. Thailand is integral to U.S. supply chains and Thai goods are desired by American consumers—not a trade threat. Thailand reaffirms its readiness for close cooperation to ensure transparent, fair, and sustainable bilateral trade."
